I've just got back from a 5 night stay at Benar Beach, over the holiday weekend. As usual it the camp site was up to expectations.
I am a bit puzzled by some of the other reviews. The first one saying that couples are not welcome and the second saying that families aren't welcome. This weekend there were many couples and families. Also children were seen playing football and cricket. The rule sheet, which I still get given on every visit even though I've been going for years, says that games are allowed as long as a soft ball is used.
Personally I have always found the owners friendly and not as described in these two reviews. I have come across some quite intolerant campsite managers, who will refuse access to single campers or all-male groups (which are the two usual ways I travel), but have never had trouble at Benar Beach. On the contrary the atmosphere always seems relaxed, as it should be on any holiday site.
As regards people being directed where to put their tent, I am only aware of this happening when the site is almost full. I arrived on the Wednesday and was free to find a spot without the owner's intervention. However I did see a couple of people being squeezed in on the Sunday.

We've been using this site for around 8-9 years and have always found David welcoming and friendly. Those with bad reviews obviously don't know the secret hand shake. We've walked to the beach in the very small hours in gale force winds, what an excellent experience. The site is just as we like it, non commercial, few facilities but what there is is always clean. Level site but take some good anchors if it looks like being very windy, sandy soil.

Just got back from here, there were 3 caravans and 2 tents in our party. Firstly the owner was happy for us all to pitch here together, especially with so many of us with the kids!( ranging from ages 6 to 14). Lovely clean site, toilets ok, showers 40p and hot (use the portacabin ones).
Now lets get to it, children are not allowed to play ball games, go on their bikes, goto the toilets on their own. Not allowed to use a kettle as it takes up too much electric, 1 of the caravans was facing a bit obscure so it had to be moved 2 foot (that is no exaggeration!).
We explained to him that he advertises as a family site, this is not the case. We said to him that it should be a adults only site if he does not want kids playing. We found it difficult to explain to the little ones that they could not play with their balls, bats, bikes etc! The owner said the kids could play in the car park next to the site, how dangerous is that! If they had of told us this before booking then we would not have gone here. We had a reasonable weekend, but will never be going back to Benar Beach again.

Very basic facilities - only one shower in the ladies and no soft toilet paper. Didn't like being told the exact spot to park my car and pitch my tent and felt a bit crampted and close to the next tent. The ground was pretty level and there is a beautiful long sandy beach close by.

August 2005 I have just returned from a three night stay at this site. We were greeted with a very frosty reception. It was made very obvious that we were not particularly welcome because we were a group of couples with no children. We felt like we were being watched all the time by the manager. Compared to other sites I have camped at, the facilities are not great, the porta-loos were full on Saturday and still hadn't been emptied by the time we left on Monday, the washing facilities were scarce and the ground very uneven.

September 2004 My Wife, children and I have used Benar beach site on quite a few occasions now. David and his father in law have always been very helpful and polite people. If they can't help you they know a man who can. The site is nice and quiet, fairly level and not too commercialised.Ideal family site with no roads to worry about or cross to get to the beach. Toilets/shower is fairly basic. Everything is within easy strolling distance.
On the main Harlech through road within a mile or so of the site There is a Spar supermarket with a good supply of foodstuffs,Buchers, and most importantly, alchoholic sustanance. A garage across the road which also supplies Calor gas, A Post office to send those all important post cards, and of course a very nice pub.
In summer months a man with a van calls to supply the morning papers. overall in my view, A site well worth visiting again.

May 2005 We had a nice stay here, david, the manager was very friendly and helpful, it was close to the shops and beach. The only problems we had were that there was only 1 shower for the men and 1 for the women, and my mom didnt like the womens at all as there was hair all over the floor. The showers were very warm though and you get 5 mins for 40p
The site was adequately signposted so it was easy to find, the only real problem was the weather!

August 2004 Despite hideous weather we had a great time at this site! The facilities were a little strange-loads of toilets but only a few showers and washbasins. But everything was clean and well kept. Fantastic location and David the owner was very friendly and helpful. I would recommend the chip shop on the next door campsite if the weather is rough or you dont fancy camp cooking!! Going back next year for sure!

July 2003 I have been camping at Benar Beach several times over the last three years and always been satisfied with my stay. The site has two fields, one mainly used by caravans (hookups available) and the other for tents. There is also a small naturist enclosure, surrounded by high walls, which will take tents or caravans, but does not have electrical hookups. The rest of the site is non-naturist.
There is a brick built shower and toilet block at one end of the site, but last year a shower portakabin was placed in the centre of the site and a number of chemical toilets were put on the camping fields, resulting in a shorter walk for campers. All these facilities have been in a clean condition whenever I've used them.
In general the site is very quiet at night with only the sound of the waves from the beach. There can be road noise from the lane running around the edge of the camping field but this is not noticeable elsewhere on the site.
The site office sells choc ices and other items and there is a larger shop on the neighbouring Dyffryn Seaside estate along with a pub and fish shop, which are available to non residents.
