This was our second visit to Lower Lacon, our first with a toddler.
The good: the pitches are huge and the rules about how/where to pitch are fairly relaxed allowing for a truly sociable weekend with friends. The wardens and staff are all very friendly and professional and the main facilities are great - quite a few toilets, hot showers, a well equipped laundry room, swimming pool with bar, club house hosting entertainment, cafe and takeaway and a great shop selling all manner of things.
The bad: the toilets by the orange field were quite grim, there's only one chemical disposal point on the whole site and no obvious recycling bins at all. The takeaway could have been great but grisly sausages and cheap chips let it down. I also couldn't help but feel a little sorry for the pigs living opposite a cafe which was constantly frying bacon.
The ugly: my half used bottle of perfume was stolen while I was having a shower! (my wash bag had split so I'd put all my toiletries by the sink while I showered). I've camped for over 30 years, this was the first time I'd ever had anything stolen and to be honest it has put me off returning to this site.
I would say that this is a great site for large families and groups wanting to party but not one for a relaxing and peaceful break.

Our first weekend away in caravan.
Just returned from Lower Lacon and found it to be a reasonable place to go for a getaway weekend or longer if you have kids.
Easy to get to, and purple plot was more than adequate for van, awning, and car.
The adult club was close by and did a decent pint at reasonable prices.
Best thing about the place was the friendliness of all the campers and caravaners. I suspect this is typical though.
The first plot we were given was unsuitable as we had forgotten to bring any blocks to level the van. The warden got on his radio and we were moved next door without any problem.
We will be going to many more sites in the future, but I would not be put off coming here by any of the not so good reviews.

OK if you are wanting a site with a pool and two clubs then this is a possible option. We had stayed at lower Lacon at least twenty years ago with our children and it was enjoyable and fun. Trouble is the facilities have not changed since then. It all looks and feels tired and this comes at a price - it is not cheap. We stayed two nights and were allocated to an area labelled as RED. Not even asked about what type of area we wanted - quiet or family etc. And the caravan were hit by Frisbees due to young families throwing them in amongst the caravans and tents which were mixed. The pitches were small and too close together - our caravan and awning filled the pitch meaning that the car had to be parked outside the pitch. The car The waste bins seemed to have no recycling facility and were grouped around the drinking water tap also the waste water was high meaning you would have to lift your water carrier to empty it. Toilet blocks were tired and grubby with a sign to say they were cleaned between 6 and 7 in the morning. Consequently I doubt if they were cleaned during the day but that might have been as we stayed during peak season. Wi-Fi is only available if you are in the immediate vicinity of the adult bar. My wife and I were disappointed that a site like this with great potential has been neglected and is relying on seasonal occupation at the expense of the touring campers and caravanners.

JUST AWFUL! This site was recommended to us a couple of years ago, but we have only just tried it. We booked well in advance for the bank holiday weekend.
We had a pitch in the purple area. The pitches were far too close together, with guy lines almost touching the lines of the tent next door. The toilets were cleaned between 6 and 7. 30am but clearly not at any other times throughout the day so by early afternoon they were pretty disgusting. I didn't even try the showers as the first look put me off, and there were only 4 showers in the block covering around 100 pitches. The rubbish bins were too high, you had to literally throw your rubbish up and in. No recycling. The takeaway food was not the nicest I've ever had, typical cheap fish n chips, dried up cornish pasty, and very greasy.
We were pitched among a group of 7/8 families who made it quite clear that this was 'their' end of the campsite and we were not welcome. They sat directly outside our tent drinking, playing music and ball games. At first I tried not to be bothered by it, but when we popped into Shrewsbury, we came back to find they were using our pitch as a games field, using the windbreaks to play tennis and the car parking space to play bowls. Not very considerate really.
As for the family behind us. Well their foul language left nothing to the imagination. I know this isn't the site's fault, but if the pitches weren't so close together, you would not be on top of each other.
To be honest, we booked for 4 nights, but only stayed 2, and even though we informed reception of our reasons, they really couldn't care less.
The ONLY good thing I would say is that the shop has a good range for such a small shop, and is very reasonably priced.
I wouldn't go here again.

Just spent a wet weekend at Lower Lacon. Site very poor with drainage, orange field we were on was all grass so with all the rain it became a mud bath, felt like I should have been at Glastonbury! Large amount of pitches were waterlogged. Toilets by this field were portaloos, it was a walk down to the other block with the showers, showers unfortunately like many other sites need more hooks (only 2) a seat and a shower curtain. The most shocking aspect of our weekend was the fact that you had to pay 10p to wash your dishes!
On the plus side, the mini golf is free(just paid a deposit)the pool was ok. We didn't venture in either of the bars, takeaway was ok.
Play area needed re vamp, its a good way away from the orange field so anyone with younger kids would have to go with them.
Site wardens about all the time so felt safe.

Stayed here for the Easter weekend. On arrival we were shown to our pitch by a very helpful steward. We had booked an electric hook up grass pitch, it was a large pitch and we were happy with it.
The site has a takeaway and cafe on site which we didn't use. It has a play park which could do with a little tlc if I'm honest, the paintwork was shabby and the swing seats were heavily worn, I suppose we expected it it look like attention had been paid over the quieter winter months. We found the site to be a good base and did what it needed to do without being great in any areas. With the site being quite large and the main driving route through being a dead end and not a loop, the volume of constant vehicle traffic was also disappointing as we were unable to settle having children so close to the road. The site is great for visiting the Shropshire hills however we thought this site was a little basic with too many groups staying on it and we most probably wouldn't return as we prefer smaller family sites.

Just had our first visit to Lower Lacon and we couldn't have been happier. The weather wasn't too good but the staff were very welcoming and helpful. The toilets always clean despite the weather. There are two toilet blocks the top one has private wash cubicles but the showers are very basic ie no shower curtain and only the hook behind the door for your clohes. The lower one has pull down seats and curtains in each shower, both are a bit dated but as I said always clean. The adults only bar by reception is very nice and the lady behind the bar was lovely. The large entertainment club J.A.K.K.S is ideal if you have children and it is next to the cafe/takeaway. It is a family run site and it shows. It was Halloween w/end and the staff joined in with dressing up and everyone on the site seemed to have a really good time at the disco. The village of Wem is 5mins away, it is small but has everything you need as does the shop on site. It is ideally placed for visiting north and mid Wales. We are definitely planning on going back next year. With a bit of luck the pigs mightn't be as shy in the warmer weather.

Just arrived home from our second visit to lower lacon, not much I can say except its brill, even better than last time, some of the untidy seasonal vans have gone. (they didn't bother us ) but the park looks heaps better, toilets are spotless, showers are hot, and in the new block there is a bathroom, pity I only saw this the night before we were leaving, kids were having the time of their lives in the heated outdoor pool, its a site well worth a visit, we only went off site once, and that was to get the dog a new harness, everything you need is catered for. Staff are so friendly and helpful nothing is too much trouble.

Have used this camp for a couple of years now. Each time it gets better. We were part of a large group and all the staff made us feel very welcome.
Toilets and showers are cleaned on a regular basis, the staff can't take the blame for the mess other campers leave! Never had a problem with the showers or toilet roll. Floors will get dirty due to the nature of the good English summer! Wet grass = muddy boots.
The shop is well equipped with basics and prices are pretty much what you'd expect from a camp shop. Cash machine does charge but that's in the hands of the machine owner, not the camp.
Haven't used the burger bar but the food at the cafe is freshly cooked to order. Ok you may have to wait a while but that has to be better than getting dried out food. Prices again are ok.
Kids love the animals. Playground is good and safe. Swimming pool warm enough and certainly clean.
Overall a good family camp, with adequate entertainment. Local facilities are good and the reception supplies details of parks, golf, museums etc.
So if you want a camp with friendly staff, animals for the kids, a pool, and a clubhouse, Lower Lacon is one of the best in my opinion.

Having just returned from our 4th year at Lower Lacon I think it's time we shouted their praise.
We camp as part of a large (Rally sized) group who have very specialised needs. 60+ families all of whom have disabled Special Needs children. We need hookups, ramps, level access, and most of all friendly support.
We have had all this and more. Nothing is too much trouble for the lovely owners, they have gone out of their way, year after year to make our annual camp an amazing time. The wardens are friendly and exceptionally helpful.
The facilities are good. Plenty of showers (two sets of shower blocks at each end of the site), a useful shop, a great pool for when the sun shines, playgrounds, crazy golf and a decent indoor club for damp evenings!
The cafe is very reasonably priced too and it's lovely to pop over for a coffee and breakfast !
Wem itself is quiet, though adequately equipped for shops. There are plenty of attractions near enough. We were delighted to discover Monkey Forest this year!
We intend to go back for many years to come!
