Visited this site with our Diablo 600 for 1 week in July. This site is very clean & tidy. Toilet blocks ok and the showers to be fair are excellent. This site also has an outdoor pool which the state is heated although after testing the water on a couple of very warm sunny days we had our doubts about the heated part. This site did state a lot - a lot a rules that is. The swimming pool had no running, jumping or diving. No fun rings, or inflatables - no balls. No excessive noise or smoking within pool area. These are just a few of the rules within the pool area. If you visit this site you will come across many more like these. After a good read you may feel like a drink. Well luckily this site has its very own bar/club on site - but - it doesn't open till 8:30pm and last orders are 10:45pm. They have tennis courts for anyone who fancies a game or too - although this is not free. £10 for 1 hour to obtain key for court. You get £8 back if you have your own bats & ball when you return the key within your hour. Personally we thought that as a bit of a racket. Table tennis wasnt much cheaper at £2.50 Large kids area which was nice although rules stated they had to be accompanied at all times by an adult. Dont get us wrong this was a nice enough site geared up for families, but our experience we felt they did prefer the more older visitors - ones with free bus passes. Good facilities, nice, clean & tidy - shame about too many rules and unnecessary charges

Very welcomming and open site with nice pool, entertainment and very well provided chipshop. Very nice hosts. Well kept sanatory building. Pitches we were allocated were large and had a good hardstanding. Site needs some more trees, though, as it was very sunny when we were there and we could hardly escape the heat.
Very well situated for Paignton Zoo and the city centre. Very nice site for longer stays with children, there is enough playing space for them, as well in the grassy playground with slides and seesaws but in the pool as well.

Stayed at Byslades since 1969 so it must have something! We went every year after for about 15 years, occasionally bringing the (then) owners kids home to leicester for an inner city break! We became great friends with the owners. When we first went it had corrugated tin toilets and one tap! And highlight of the night was when the chip van came by! The site went off a little in the early 80's in the hands of newer owners so we gave it a miss for a few years, vowing to return when I had kids of my own. WOW! What an improvement. The site is now awesome and it was an emotional moment stepping foot on the red soil with my own kids. I shared many of my childhood memories with them, man,was I choked. The site has everything now and is extremely secure. An important thing to me and my family. Super views. Try pointing your torch at the mast when it's misty!! Going again this year for a short break. One of my lifes highlights I expect!

May 2005 Have just returned from a week's break at this site. The site had only opened on the 20th May, so when we arrived on the 23rd May there were only a small number of caravans on site. We had already booked so had been given pitch no 81, but the owners advised us that due to the fact that the previous weekend it had rained that we may be better in a sheltered pitch. We viewed the various pitches that were on offer to us, but decided to stick with our original pitch as the view was fantastic (overlooking open fields).
Our pitch was on one of the terraced areas, in close proximity to both toilet blocks.
We have a large Diablo 600 tent and found that the pitch was ample, although not sure what it would have been like if there had been other guests either side of us, at the time we were the only ones on this terraced area, albeit one caravan at the end of the terrace on a hard standing.
If you book in time and are given a choice of pitches I would certainly recommend the terraced area (pitch numbers between 75 and 85), although we would have been happy to pitch our tent on the majority of the pitches available, only a small few were sloping.
Slightly disappointed that the bar area was not open, we left on Friday morning to see a sign outside the bar saying "opening Friday", we had been advised upon booking that it would be open, but had to venture into Totnes/Paignton for an evening meal.

August 2004 Funnily enough we also stayed on pitch 202 in August like the earlier reviewer. All in all we had a good experience staying on this site. The site is tidy and well maintained. Showers and toilets OK but packed in a bit tight and a bit of a climb (take a bucket for the wee hours!). There are also dishwashing areas under cover, disposal points, plenty of stand pipes and waste bins which were regularly emptied.
We went in the good sized pool once but as the weather was a bit dodgy also visited Paignton indoor pool which is about 5 mins drive. Byslades pool is heated though and is OK while you are swimming and had a separated bit for toddlers making it very safe. Children enjoyed the playground and crazy golf which we had a good view of from our pitch. we could allow them to wander over and play while we chilled out.
Also the traffic is well controlled with bumps and a one way system which made it more safe for the kids. Can't comment on the club though as didn't go in. The shop and the cafe was OK but got most of our food and beer from Safeways about 3 mins drive away next door to Paignton zoo.
Fantastic view over the valley from the terraced pitches which were although well worn (to be expected at the end of August)and a bit muddy were quite level. We pitched a bit off centre onto slightly higher grassy ground as it was a wet week. We kept dry but some folks got a bit wet and muddy as the ground is a bit heavy with red clay that seems to get in everything. It was exceptionaly wet though for the time of year being a week after the Boscastle floods, so that considered it was fairly well drained and there wasn't too much standing water or mud.
I would recommend booking a pitch so as to avoid the overflow field which was about a 30 degree slope. The reception lady was quite friendly, courteous and helpful and the security of the site was outstanding. Entry to the site was by an electronic barrier, that could only be accessed with your electronic swipe card that you got with a £10 deposit which was refunded on checking out when you de-camped.
This site is well situated in pleasant surroundings with plenty to to in the area. Torquay regatta week is usually in August and this year there was a pretty good firework display, funfair and Red Arrows display. Brixham is not far and nor is Totnes also 1/2 hours drive and you are on Dartmoor. We hope to return next year and all being will opt for a stay at Pitch 202 Byslades.

August 2004 Very impressed with the camp, toilets totally cobweb and spider free, plenty of private wash cubicles, cleanest I have seen. Club nice, no entertainment apart from music, nice to be able to sit and talk for a change. The owner will put proper lighting on for dancing if requested. Lovely childrens playground. We stayed in the paddock, this is a field which appears to be for busy periods, large plots and wonderful views. Will definately visit again.

August 2004 Very nice views, very clean facilities, good cafe, good shop, nice play room for kids, good play area, nice club with limited entertainment. Overall an excellent sit. I suppose the lack of entertainment on at the club is due to the proximity of caravans nearby. The only real problem can be the slope of some of the pitches. We will be returning to this site again.

August 2004 We've just returned from 2 wks at Byslades & we had a great time. We had a superpitch opposite the swimming pool/ bar/ shop etc. Considering we were right opposite we weren't disturbed by noise at all. You could hear people leaving the club at 11, but we were still at a distance that it didn't bother us. The site was very busy & full when we were there, but lots of people went out during the day so you could still use facilities ok.
The pool was excellent & the adventure playground, by the very spacious field, the showers were very good. The staff were really frindly, but we did hear that the site manager wasn't very helpful. Though we didn't have any complaints. We thought it was excellent value & will be going back I'm sure!

August 2004 Our visit to Byslades was ok but a few things spoiled it for us as. We were placed on a large pitch, but it was sloped making it uncomfortable to sleep, cook, and put gas lamps on tables.
We was kept awake by noise most nights we ended up making complaints to the owners about loud noise through the early hours of the night. We also found the club to be tacky and used the pub next door (Blagden Inn) which served meals at a good price. The shop on site did not sell much.
But they had a good information center and the showers and toilets were pretty clean, And the swimming pool was very clean and nicely set out.
We would try some other sites before returning to Byslades, and never will I accept a slopped pitch again.
But Paignton,Torquey,Brixam,Dartmouth and Dartmoor made up for everything Devon is magical............

August 2004 We have just come back from a lovely week at Byslades. Toilets and showers very clean, plenty of hot water in showers. The entertainment was a bit corny but nothing wrong with it really. We were right at the bottom of the site. A bit of an uphill walk to the bar etc but this meant peace and quiet and a lovely view. I do think that there are more than 150 pitches though as we were on 202 and there were a few more after us. We would go here again. Paington is as tacky as it could be but Brixham and Torquay very nice, Totnes nice as well.
