I had been to Auchenlarie the previous October and thought it was pretty good, so I took the family back there for a break, and found it to be less impressive the second time. The site in general is ok but a few small things took the shine off this time. The food in the restaurant/bar was very poor, on our first night there and after a long journey we tried the restaurant ,I ordered a chicken curry and what I got was definitely not chicken curry! The entertainment was fine and the kids enjoyed their disco. The staff in the entertainment and the sports bar were excellent. The site could be doing with an actual restaurant where couples can go for a nice meal,as there isnt anything within walking distance.
The swimming pool is ok, a bit small for such a large park, the changing rooms are a bit shoddy and cramped. We also thought having to pay 20p for a locker every time was out of order considering you had just shelled out for a leisure pass, the lockers weren't even that secure. The play park on site is ok and the beach is great. We had the gold villa which was a bit of a let down. The TVs in the kids rooms sounded great but couldn't be viewed unless the kids were stood on their beds and were directly underneath the TV,the kitchen was very small and the beds were very uncomfortable. The surrounding area is brilliant with loads to do and some lovely towns to visit. All in all not a great second visit, but it was ok.

This was our very first outing with our very first caravan and we chose Auchenlarie as it was only 40 minutes drive from us. We were pleasantly surprised to be only charged £10 per night for a fully serviced pitch as opposed to £17 as advertised on the website. We have two young children and found that Auchenlarie had all we needed and probably more to keep us all happy!
The taps in the toilet blocks were a bit too powerful though and you get soaked every time you want to just wash your hands! One of the sinks had a blue tap but was definitely the hot tap as the water was scorching so watch out, especially with the kids. The entertainment room was good, alcoholic drinks were a bit on the pricey side but I suppose that is to be expected.
Swimming facilities were good and the views and small beach areas were beautiful. There were many parks placed all around the site which were all great and well maintained. We will definitely be returning very soon. This was a great site for us to start out at and we found it a great place to meet new people.

Our first family 'break' Friday to Monday. The site was clean and well sign posted. The reception staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. A big thanks for the complimentary bottle of bubbly - which was a lovely surprise. We had a weekend of glorious sunshine so we spent our days on the beach. The caravan ( silver ) was very clean, spacious and well equipped.
The site shop stocked everything needed and was reasonably priced. The food in The Bistro was hot, fresh and tasty and well priced. There were 5 playgrounds for kids although nothing for toddlers which was a shame. We only visited Castle Douglas to stock up on Haggis etc. A very nice holiday was had by all us all and we will return when our little one is a little older.

We stayed here on our way back from western Scotland, and it had just won the Scottish park of the year. It is a fab site, but it did have a couple of niggles. The swimming pool at busy times is limited entry numbers, so if you don't book, you may have to wait. The restaurant or bistro as they called it was ok if you liked your food fried and the pitches that are on a slope are prone to flooding if there are lots of rain, also it can get windy, so watch your awning!
This said it was a nice site, with fab play areas and a beach, which is not sandy, but there is one that is a five minute drive away. The cream o galloway is great, go to reception beforehand and pick up a free newspaper, as it has free entry for parents saving you £4 for two, and the lunches there are nice. The nearest supermarkets are in newton stewart (sainsburys and aldi)

We have just returned from our first visit to Auchenlarie and we were really impressed with the site. We stayed in a bronze caravan which was very clean and had a flat screen tv in and dvd and microwave with outstanding sea views. The site was very quiet as although it was the middle of August the Scottish children had gone back to school. The site is mainly owners and I could imagine it would have been busier over the weekend.
The entertainment was good and started at 8pm. The funcation room is very clean and modern. We used the swimming pool twice which was never too busy as they have swim sessions on for 45 mins. There are several good play areas dotted around the park. I found all of the staff to be very welcoming and friendly and it was such a difference to holiday at a family run park rather than the haven ones.
Cream o Galloway the ice cream place is fantastic and about 10 mins away in car. We bought a weekly pass as it has an indoor play area and unfortunately we had lots of rain.
Loved the park so much we will definitely be back. A credit to the owners.

Just back from a sleepless 4 night stay at this site. Although my family and I agree that the facilities are more than adequate (good toilet/shower block, entertainment complex and shop) we find it unbelievable that no-one (especially the sites website) has bothered to mention that pitches for tents in the 'rally area' are almost on the A75 and are at such a slope that we almost slid out the side of the tent during the night. You would have thought that not being able to sleep for the noise of articulated lorries trundling along the A75 at all times of the night and having to hang on to the groundsheet of the tent in order to prevent sliding into the burn at the end of the field would be important factors to mention. The surrounding area itself does contain some beautiful wee towns and villages and some spectacular castles and views.

Me and my family have just come back from a weekend at Auchenlarie Campsite. I thought the campsite was brilliant and would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone. We arrived on the Friday afternoon to a very nice welcome from the reception who gave us a welcome pack which was very informative. We were in a touring caravan (hard Standing Pitch) section. The pitches are of good size with good water and power facilities.
The only down side to the pitches is you can be located on a considerable hill in busy times so some of the pitches are really no use when using your awning. We did get an ideal pitch at the top of the hill and the views were amazing - looking right across the whole sight directly to the sea. The entertainment / pool / sports bar / shop etc are all well maintained and provide everything you could wish for your holiday at a reasonable price. I would give this campsite a 9/10 and we will be going back again and again.

We have booked 6 weeks of stays here in last two years, always in statics although I did take a close look at tent pitches. A fantastically located site but very steeply sloping. Wonderful views. Good facilities with indoor pool and entertainment complex, although not that big. Food in restaurant is poor and is regularly criticised. Shame bearing in mind the setting. Good food in pubs and restaurants in nearby Gatehouse of Fleet. Tent pitches had best location at the front of the site but now moved to back of site nr main a75 road. Staff are very good. Childrens play areas dotted around the site. Most statics are owned. Loads to do in area. Great for families of all ages. Can get rowdy. I'll be back!

We have just come back from this site and found it to be pretty good in general. The pool is small and but ok, the indoor play area is very small and all the 'fun' facilities are packed in one building. This is ok at relatively quiet times but could be a nightmare in peak period. The family club had bingo, kids disco and a very funny host who had us in stitches and it really made for an enjoyable night or two. The staff were very friendly, the prices reasonable and our silver caravan was much better than anticipated. One slight problem is the travelling to anything in the surrounding area, all attractions are at least 30 minutes in the car but there are some good ones, the chocolate factory is great as is the Cream o'Galloway, which has a great adventure playground and ice cream ! There is also a lovely wildlife park near Kirkcudbright, called Galloway Conservation park which has some really unusual animals, lovely walks, a great hostess and some very friendly snakes ! All in all a pretty good holiday and a nice park and we will probably be back.

Just back from our very first camping holiday at this site, stayed for 3 night's. Overall a nice clean site, the toilets have been upgraded recently I believe and there is now 2 block's with plenty of showers etc. Although mine was cold but I know other's didn't have a problem so maybe just your luck! There is an entertainment complex with pool and amusements etc for the kids and a sports bar for the adults. Downside of this site because on a cliff top very windy, fair few bent pegs around from all the tents! Wouldn't recommend Bistro at complex for meal overpriced for small portions. Apart from all this great family friendly site with loads for kids to do, not sure I would recommend for couples as basically a holiday park full of statics with tents & tourers in a corner!
Probably will go back at some point.
