Spent two nights here in July as we didn't want to go very far just for two nights. Nice friendly welcome on arrival and although we weren't shown to our pitch it was easy enough to find. The pitch itself was very disappointing. It was quite a wet weekend and the grass was very water logged. Also, we may have been unlucky but there were lots of rocks and stones on our pitch and we actually made a small hole in the sewn-in groundsheet of our brand new 400 pounds tent - not very happy!
Toilet block not very clean but that was probably mostly down to it being such a wet and muddy weekend. Didn't use showers but there were warning notices to say they were extremely hot and to be cautious! Also my 5 year old couldn't go to the toilet alone as you had to punch in a four figure code and the door was way too heavy for her to open.
Playground on site was excellent and my three kids spent the whole weekend there. You can spend hours and hours walking around the country park as it's so lovely. On site cafe served good food at a good price and the carvery was excellent - we paid 23 pounds for two adult and two children's carveries and five drinks! They will freeze blocks for you but this is done in the cafe which means you can only drop them off or pick them up between 9am and 5.30pm, which isn't very useful at all in the heat. No on site shop so you had to leave the site even just to buy bread and milk - not good when you have a two year old crying for milk in the morning and your milk has gone off due to having to pick up your freezer blocks before 5.30pm the previous day.
Surrounding area of Aberdare town centre, Merthyr Tydfil town centre have excellent shops, cafe's restaurants etc. And you're about a 40 minute drive away from Swansea or opposite direction, Cardiff.
All in all if your expectations aren't too high then it's a good site at a good price. We paid 15 pounds for two nights - 2 adults and 3 children (2 children we didn't have to pay for as they were 5 or under).

Stunning location even though your a stone throw from the town. If you like walking there's several walks of various ability. The play area for the kids was great and kept mine busy! The visitor centre and cafe are excellent although sunday lunch was pricey at £9.00 for carvery
The site and toilets were clean and tidy considering it was a busy bank holiday weekend. You do need long hookups though as posts were far apart. There was 3 of us and it cost us £13.75 inc hookup per night, which is excellent value
The town of Aberdare has everything you would need with 2 supermarkets, fast food outlets, restaurants, etc. Would recommend the mexican Amigos although booking is recommended. All together a great weekend!

Great site, very reasonable 1 caravan unit 2 adults 2 children £16 p/night.Caravan park includes the toilet block and wash facilities, free hot water, generally clean.
Opposite side of quiet road is a new 3 tier banking which takes tents only, all electric pitches, reasonable in size but ground is quite hard so summer bookings be prepared.
Great park/playground for children and the visitor centre is the info place for all walks around the country park with some stunning views.
Definitely worth a visit especially if you don't like commercial sites with clubhouses etc etc.

We stayed here as a result of reading the reviews on this website.
We were very impressed with this camping site - definitely a hidden treasure and very reasonable at only £11 per night, including EHU.
The camping site itself is very basic, in terms of facilities, toilets and showers, but worth every penny of the nightly fee. It is situated right in the heart of the country park, with easy, flat access to the lakes and the most beautiful views. The site is ideal for dogs, with endless walks available in a number of different directions and lots of different wildlife.
The camping site is right in the middle of a public pathway, although it is fenced off separately and the shower block is by key only.
There is a warden on duty all night in the event of any problems and we found her to be very helpful and approachable.
We would definitely return to this site again, particularly for the freedom it allows and the endless walks.

We have just spent 3 nights here, the site was lovely, very flat, the team were very friendly, the pitches were large, facilities very good, plenty of hot water in the showers and they were clean, I noticed that the toilets were cleaned twice a day, except sunday and were cleaned once. There were lots of children about but they caused no nuisance at all also nearly every caravanner had a dog and most were very well behaved. The cafe seemed very reasonable and the whole area was great. We would definitely visit again as the price of £11 for pitch EHU and awnings and free showers was really good value for money.
The couple of little hiccups were on checking someone had been given our pitch and it took a while for us to be allocated a pitch, rubbish bin was overflowing (maybe because it was a weekend)the pitches are concrete and we had trouble pitching the awning.
One last thing if you a Sat nav type in Highland place and not the post code you wont have a problem finding the site.

Firstly, do not do as I did and take the wrong road into the site. I phoned to get a SatNav postcode for site based on advice from a previous review and was given CF44 7PT. I followed TomTom like a brain dead slave down Cwmdare Road - big mistake - it takes you down a steep hilled narrow road and then through 2 width restrictions (1 about 8' and the second about 7' 6'). I slowly negotiated these to then come into the site car park on the wrong side. The only way through to the caravan site was though a locked gate. I asked reception if they could help me out by unlocking but this was not possible so I had to retrace my route and go in the right way (through town). Anyway, onto the site review, stayed 1 night only as we were trying out our new 'van. Easily pitched on plastic meshed spots. Needed some screw pegs in some places for the awning as the normal bang in ones went banana shaped. Easy hook up but needed my 25m cable to reach. Drinking water from a outside sink unit by the toilet block, I could foresee problems if the site was busy. Toilet block was okay, I'd say 6 out of 10. Had a very quiet night on this site. Overall I would recommend. Noticed they are adding a lot of new pitches, hook ups and water points as part of an expansion program so should be interesting where this site is going.

Stayed there last minute as they said they had just had a cancellation (although the site was never full in 2 days!) The reception was very welcoming although the literature for the local area was a bit scarce (They did say they had only just reopened)
Paid £5.25 per night for 1 tent and 2 adults, EHU was included in the price but we didn't use it.
There is a small field with trees in and lit EHU points which the site says accommodates 10 pitches - the pitches aren't marked out and it's very much a first come first served basis.
Very Good toilet/shower/washing up and laundry facilities - the whole block has a keycode system to prevent day visitors (it is a country park after all) from using them. 3 showers in each block plus an electric point for those hair straighteners! It didn't have a freezer for freezer blocks that I could see.
The only gripe is that they seem to be only cleaned once a day at around 7.30am, so can get quite messy and the supplied toilet roll runs out.
The washers/dryers work on a token system - not sure how you obtain these especially if the reception is closed (as it was on a Sunday (however the cafeteria staff are extremely helpful))
As mentioned above there is an onsite cafeteria of which the food is lovely and well priced - not sure of the opening times though.
The area is perfect for trips out, the Brecon Beacons being about a 20 minute drive and wouldn't take too long to get to the coast either. Plus there are a wealth of local places to vist if you know where they are. Also, the park itself has some lovely walks and bike riding routes.
For those with Caravans, you have a separate 'field' with very level standings and good access from what I could tell.
One final note, my satnav took me to completely the wrong place (based on the postcode) So once you enter Aberdare town centre, make sure you follow the signs as it is very well signposted!

Very pretty site, nice to be in such a nice country park - and there seem to be plans to expand. Toilets were filthy, but we did stay on a very busy weekend with a motorbike show on in nearby Aberdare park. My heart sank when we pulled in opposite a very large group of people dressed up clearly having a party with lots to drink! But they caused no trouble at all and their music went off at 11.30pm. BUT at 12am a family of 5 turned up very drunk and father and son decided to have a brawl. This continued for over 2 hours with several campers trying to stop the brawl. No warden to be seen, and he did not answer his phone. Very dissapointing.

What a great weekend! Stayed up there for 3 nights and had a fabalous time. There was 6 tents of people aged between 5- 25years and not one of us found a problem.
The ground was a bit stony to put the pegs in but apart from that a lovely small flat field with facilities right by. Toilets and showers are extremelly clean and if needed anything done e.g. No toilet roll, just go to the reception and it is dealt with straight away. There is a lock on toilet and when booked in you are given the code on a piece of paper so you know that only camping people are using the facilities. There are really hot showers, dish washing area, clothes washing area, washing machine, tumble drier(both require a token at the reception only £2.50 Each) chemical disposal and large bin area.
There is plenty to do, walking on a number of trails, mini assualt course great for a quick laugh with your friends, two parks for the children, 2 lovely lakes and the river for fishing.
5 min drive from aberdare town centre with a wide variety of shops and supermarkets, or just stay around your tents and have a laugh with your friends playing games. Everyone is friendly and we recieved no complaints of anyone around us when playing ball games, having a bbq and playing music singing and dancing. Cant wait to return in whitsun.

We came to this campsite with a large group of people for the weekend. We are glad we turned up early - as we had the chance to pick a prime location for our tent as the ground is shocking!
Never before have we had such a struggle to put up our tent in such stony, hard ground! Several others in our party also experienced bent and misshapen pegs due to the poor ground. We were lucky it wasn't windy conditions, as not all the pegs could be knocked in that far - and if we hadn't brought a mallet we would have been in trouble!
The washing / toilet facilities provided have a lock on them to ensure that only people camping / caravaning have access. On the first day when there were only 3 tents in the field and one caravan they were in excellent condition, However the busier the site became (and it wasn't excessively busy) the conditions deteriorated a little (not enough hot water, no toilet paper, one of the three women's showers not working).
We were quite surprised how small the actual campsite was and the fact that it was right in the country park, next to the visitors centre and car park. As a previous review has stated we were a little dismayed how the general public could just stroll through the campsite and it made us feel that none of our items would be safe. Therefore apart from the sleeping bags and bed, everything else was locked in the car boot for safe keeping.
On our second night at the campsite the area directly behind our tent (down a slope towards the town) was on fire and the local fire brigade had to be called. Luckily this incident happened just before the lady on reception left for the day, so she could tell the fire brigade exactly where the fire was and how to best reach it.
At present this review makes the campsite sound like the worst place in the country! But the people who work at the park are really helpful and go out of their way to be of assistance. One pro of being next to the visitors centre is the fact that food (such as breakfast and lunch) can be purchased from the cafeteria and there is a small children's playground.
Although we wouldn't necessarily stay here again - it was a good base for the weekend and we had lots of excellent walks nearby.
