What a lovely site! Relaxing, friendly and lots to do nearby.
We were positioned over-looking the lake which was a lovely view and brilliant for the children to crab fish in whist still being able to see what they were up to! There is an outdoor pool a few minutes walk away which is FREE I might add, a children's playground, plenty of cafes and pubs and though the beach isnt very nice, the man made one makes up for it! Also, I must recommend Scooby doo's chip shop-it was amazing food!
The toilet and shower facilities could do with a lick of paint to refresh them but were always clean and stocked with the essentials. The people who ran the site were helpful and good at upholding the rules to make everyones stay enjoyable.
Though only 40 minutes away from where I live, I cant wait to go back again!
Possibly a tad pricey @ £17.50 per night for the use of what I would call 'basic' facilities but the price hasnt put me off.
As a family of 5 looking for a change of scenery and things to do away from everyday life, Brightlingsea has everything to offer!

Spent just one night at this site. It was better than I expected. We had a nice view of the lake but did feel very exposed as just a wire fence between our pitch and the public park around the lake. Having said that it was mainly dog walkers going round who were all friendly. We were here for the Bank Holiday Sunday and as expected it was very cramped, luckily fellow campers were all very nice people. No area to play for the children and no bikes allowed, there isn't really the room. Toilets were old but very clean, with toilet paper. The two showers were pretty feeble and had soggy carpet in them, which was pretty yukky. The owners were pleasant and helpful. Thought it was pricey (£17.50 per night for 2 adults)for the facilities available but it is a seaside town.
Brightlinsea itself was quite charming and old fashioned with lots of beachhuts. Plenty of crabbing going on and a man made beach and inlet pool which was very popular. A few nice boats going in and out. Some friendly pubs in the area, welcoming to children. There's a big playground and outdoor pool only a couple of minutes away from the site. We had good weather and if you didn't I think you'd struggle to keep children entertained. I'd probably return but not on a busy weekend.

Nice location. The lake view was fantastic. There is a swimming pool but we didn't use it as very cold and wet weekend, but we will definitely go back hoping for a better weather.
The owners, very nice couple, made us feel very welcome.
Overall very clean and hot water available all day. Kids loved it, only problem was the weather as one day was so windy and wet we couldn't leave the tent.

I had planned a group camping trip, I needed a child and dog friendly site with room for 2 pitches. This was the very first place that had room for my last minute decision break.
I read the reviews on here and feared the worst.
I arrived later than planned due to traffic problems, the office was closed, however the couple that run the site were very understanding and still made us feel very welcome.
They advised us to pitch by the lake, up the bank as rain was forecast and we'd be drier there.
I was delighted! The view was beautiful!
The toilet block was clean and well maintained, plenty of hot water, there was also a lovely clean area with 2 sinks for dishwashing.
As we set up camp, the owners came over to check everything was ok and made a big fuss of the puppy we had brought with us.
We will be going back, we were made to feel relaxed and welcome, the area is beautiful and close to many places of interest.
The children age 3-16 all had a brilliant time.
I can't wait to go back!
There is an outdoor public pool nearby, a sailing club, plenty of places to eat, and beautiful places to take the dog for a walk, the children enjoyed the large field, the walks around the lake and it's not too far for days out at Clacton, Walton on the Naze and Frinton.
We had hoped for clear skies to watch the Perseids meteorite shower. Thankfully Saturday night was fairly clear, there was hardly any light pollution.
So all in all, a fantastic site with plenty to do and see nearby, and lovely peaceful evenings.
What more could you want? :o)

We booked in at this site as we wanted to see the area etc The lake (nice view)is a public one adjacent to the site, separated only by a meter high wire fence and there is no gate to the site entrance, so security is non existent. The toilet block is about 30 years out of date, the shower floor and wash area tiles have been painted over and the paint is peeling off. There are old pieces of carpet all over the floor areas and most of the time we were there we had no hot water. The waste bins in there were not emptied once in the 6 days we were there, the area outside the block looked like a scrap yard with old doors, metal and piles of grass cuttings. Myself and other campers approached the owner about the hot water and he blamed the campers for turning the taps on, creating an air lock. The field also has a tendency to flood and the grass is quite soft. He has a policy of no refunds whatsoever so be warned. After six nights we moved on, although we had paid (£16.50 per night)for more. I have since found out the lease has only 2 years left so I think he has given up.

We would thoroughly recommend this site, the owners are more than helpful and very friendly. The site is very clean, the toliets are a little outdated but very clean. The site overlooks a lovely lake and is near the beach and harbour. There is a quaint little town within walking distance and a super fish and chip shop called Scooby Snax a short distance away, you cant beat them, very reasonably priced and cooked fresh. There are plenty of lovely walks around it is the perfect site for a relaxing weekend or longer stay and you are only 20mins from Clacton.

I have reviewed this site before but not since 2004, we stay on it regulaly because we have family in Brightlingsea. The owners are always polite and helpful we dont find them over bearing or nosey as some have commented on, we think they are a nice couple. The toilet blocks have had a paint this year, they needed one, its a small site well maintained and near to shops and drinking establishments. There is a club just over the road and a walk around the town will help you find plenty of cafe's and restaurants.

Ok where to start. We only live 20 minutes away but I have parked the family there for 4 nights and then commute from the shop in the evenings. It is not the most level site with quite a few lumps and bumps but the location is excellent, the grass cut and the toilets clean, and showers working. The couple who run it are lovely and asked to give my 3 year old son a lollipop but we declined politely (he runs like a lunatic with out the E numbers already) so the lady then put £1 in his hand and told him to buy something with us later. The Indian round the corner is excellent and is actually Indian and not Bangladeshi like 95% in the UK and is the most authentic I have ever tasted outside India. (We winter holiday in Goa for 4 weeks every year when to cold to caravan!) Brightlingsea may be a bit of a time warp with an old fashioned Lido (Unfortunately rumoured to close next season) but is wonderful and the wife and son love it and its great.

Okay, back again last weekend (25th-28th August 07) for the Mirror Nationals at the sailing club next door. The site owner recognised us from our previous stay, and went out of his way to be helpful as before. He even let us stay on 4 hours after the normal departure time so we didn't get stuck in the car park jam at the sailing club when 75 boats and cars left for home.
The site was PACKED - absolutely full, being the August bank holiday weekend, and we had to wait for the showers a couple of times, but they coped well, and we really enjoyed ourselves. You don't expect en suite when you are staying in a tent!
We'll be back again.

We booked this site because of its location near the Brightlingsea Sailing Club, as we had brought down 2 Mirror Dinghies to sail. There were 11 units and 30 people in our group. Having read some of the earlier reviews, I was a little worried as to the way we would be received, but I needn't have been.
The site is well maintained by a nice elderly couple who were attentive - I can see how some people might misconstrue this as nosey, but it wasn't really like that. They're just making sure everything is OK - it is THEIR site after all. The site is small, with a limited number of electric hookups, but the location is fantastic and more than makes up for it. All the kids played in the middle of the camping area - big enough for a proper game of cricket!
Toilets and showers were adequate - nothing special, but clean and tidy all of the time we were there. Washing up facilities, washers and driers are all available too.
The sea, ferry to Mersea Island, beaches, swimming pool, town centre and cafes are all very close, and there is an excellent Co op store just next to the campsite, and great chippy / takeaway a short drive away. We had a great weekend, and are back again next weekend for more sailing at the Mirror National Championships Aug 2007.
