We've just got back from three nights staying at this lovely campsite. We'll certainly use it again if we camp in South Devon.

I can see it wouldn't be everybody's choice - there's no bar, no shop, no reception, no signs on the nearby roads etc.

But what you get is a field to pitch your tent in, a clean & simple block with warm showers, clean bogs, washing up sinks with warm water and a freezer to put your freezer blocks and ice cube trays in that's free of charge.

It appears there's no booking needed. Just turn up, pitch your tent and pay by the night.

The only entertainment that's laid on is watching the owner zooming around the site in his car directing new arrivals to their pitches and going round collecting the money. He does this about five times an evening, and sometimes forgets who's paid and who hasn't.

But he's got time for a friendly chat and (exceptionally loud) laugh with everybody and there's nothing he won't do to make your stay a happy one.

Our tent is about 2 metres by 4, so bigger than the standard 2 man, but he didn't charge the full rate for us, just a couple of quid a night more than the basic, which we thought was great.

Caution - the directions to the campsite from his website are out of date - the old pub on the main road is closed and some of the signposts are missing. Just go down the road marked 'Branscombe 2' and you'll spot the entrance about half a mile on the right, just after the fork in the road.

Nearest pub is a 20 minutes walk down the steepest road in England to the Mason's Arms in Branscombe. Make sure you take lights if you go at night to avoid being run over! The beach is another 10 minutes walk from there.

Nearest shop with parking is the Co-op in Seaton.

When we arrived the owner didn't seem to know that we'd booked but that wasn't really a problem and he was a friendly bloke who was quite happy to help. Yes it was a little disorganised but so what.

We found ourselves in the first field with half a dozen empty touring caravans which made the place feel a bit soulless. Probably better in the two farthest fields.

The facilities were pretty basic but perfectly adequate. They might need a bit of maintenance but its a farm after all. Having said that at £18 a night you might expect a bit more.

Kids had a good time playing with other children on the site but the site road is through the middle which kept us on our toes. There's also some cows, chickens, pigs and horses to keep them entertained. The farm dog has the roam of the place and you need to watch where you are walking which isn't great.

We found the whole area a bit of a rip off, but perhaps this is to be expected in Devon in August. The Sea Shanty on Branscombe beach relieved us of £21+ for three jacket potatoes and the Fish & Chippy in Beer was clearly out to rip off the tourist. Guess its a seasonal business so perhaps they are entitled to but it took the shine off the area for us.

Probably wouldn't go back.

The owner met us on arrival where he told us where to pitch, we offered to pay, but we were told he would collect it later as that was the way he always did it. When we had set up, later that evening he returned to collect his money with charges that barely resembled those on the website. Obviously we were then obliged to stay as it was too late move on.

We were charged £21.00 per night for a motor home 7m long. Total disregard was made for the 20 feet distance between pitches, that some other camps make. The showers were a a set of garden sheds with lights that didn't always work, that were filthy which had accumulated over a period of time, the water never drained away so you had to paddle in the previous persons dirty water. The toilet block was a mobile unit from a building site. The washing up sinks of which there were 2, had no cover were attached to the mobile toilets, when complaints were made about the lack of water, the owner adjusted the flow, from the toilets to the sinks, leaving the toilets unable to flush due to insufficient water. The rubbish next to the toilet block, was overloaded

 Plus points:

The site is pristine - grass is beautifully kept with lovely stripes.

The showers are included in the price and perfect, warm and there is enough space to hang things without them getting wet.

The taps have hot water! Luxury!

The toilet block is clean and all in working order.

Recycling is well catered for.

They have chickens and horses that kids can look at.

Booking online was easy and they sent back confirmation of payment incredibly quickly.

Negatives:

The view was of 2 static caravans that block the view of the sea.

The main road is near and you can hear cars.

You cannot have camp fires all year round.

There is no choice of where to camp, you get told where to go.

As the site is essentially 2 fields there is not a great deal of privacy, unless you are lucky enough to be by the hedge side you are out in the open.

In summary:

At £10 a night this is one of the cheaper camp sites around here but I was disappointed we could not have a fire as that is one of my search criteria. It was ok for one night but I'd look for somewhere different for longer stays.

Returning to camping after 20 years & picked this site off this website. Following the directions off Coombe View Farm's website & you find the pub and sign where you turn are both long gone, however a good guess got us there. The farmer had clearly opened up a 3rd field for a busy week as the first 2 are very tidy, mown and level whereas the 3rd is partly mown and has a slight slope. The farmer gave us a site and we put the tent up & went to buy some provisions, but on our return found another tent being erected so close our guy ropes were intersecting. Felt more like being at a festival. The guys did apologise but said the farmer had told them he wanted 100 tents in this field this weekend.

The site itself is basic, facilities are ok, 2 blocks of toilets as there appears to have put in a new block that you see on large building sites. There was long queues for the 2 sinks to wash up in. Would be greatly improved if they could fix the catches on all the toilet doors as both mine & my girls kept coming open.

I did not try the local cider that the owner offered me and am unsure whether I would return, especially on such a busy week as tents were very close and with the wind in the right direction we were directly under the flight path of planes landing at exeter airport. Feel I am nit picking a bit but for £30 a night I can do better.

This is a stunningly beautiful area. We (four adults two children in two tents) However were not impressed by the management. Chaotic behavior from the owner who haggled with every camper for fees and the sale of his cider as they arrived. He drove across the fields manically to check on departures not remembering whether payments had been made or deposits paid, clearly lacking in record keeping skills. Being at the far field it was a long trek to the water tap, shower block and toilets, which were very basic. No bins in the loos or shower cubicles. I didn't see them being cleaned for the whole week we were there. The rules regarding camp fires were hazy and liable to instant change, as were the pitch positions. It has the potential to be the coolest of cool campsites.

A beautiful location with views to the sea but spoilt by the very poor toilets, showers and washing up facilities. New Portakabin-style toilets are being installed but were not working at the time of our visit and if working, they still only had 2 toilets for women and two for men. There is one washing up sink and two showers for the entire site. With a little bit of investment in better facilities this could be a lovely site but we will not be returning because there are many much better and cheaper sites available in the area. The site does not have a shop. There are hook-ups in the first field and at the top of the second field. The village of Beer is beautiful and well worth a visit as is the Mason's Arms pub in Branscombe.

This is a lovely campsite. It has an absolutely stunning view over the coast from on top of the cliff. It has a very friendly owner called Trevor who takes a personal interest in making sure you're ok.
My friends and I stayed here for two nights, and we really enjoyed sitting round the large campfire at night, playing folk songs with the other campers and drinking the aptly named suicider that Trevor sells.
The toilets are very clean and comfortable, and the showers are hot and powerful. It is reasonably priced at £12 a pitch in high season. I would definitely recommend it.

The site owners have advised that since the last reviews, any long term sited caravans have been removed from the site.

They have also advised that their pricing system has been updated, and is based on pitch size.

Please see their website for full details

We stayed on this site for 2 nights.   It is in a lovely location, and we received a good welcome initially from the site owner.
However, there were many caravans on site with occupants who appeared to be long term tenants, and appeared to be running businesses from the campsite.   Noise levels were very high, especially at night, and the campsite owner let the children (and adults!) of these caravans ride motor bikes and quad bikes across the campsite at frequent intervals.
The toilet block and showers, were basic, and were not cleaned as often as was necessary for the number of people on the site.
Many other campers, including us, had complained to the owner, but to no avail, and some, including me,  received a very aggressive response from him.
We will certainly not be returning to this site.   The prices also seemed high, considering the very basic toilet facilities.
