The site was quite easy to find although I can see why larger vehicles are advised to go round the whole ring road rather than approaching it through the centre of town! Reception was very welcoming, English spoken, and we were allowed to choose any pitch for our tent. The site is only a short walk from town and yet is very peaceful – we walked into town every day and it is really worthwhile walking up to the mediaeval city at night because it is so tranquil and beautiful - it's great not to have to use the car to get anywhere. I was prepared to pick my way along the river walk avoiding the dog poo but we found it quite clean during our stay!
We were there at the end of August so the site was relatively quiet and there were lots of free pitches. We pitched our tent in a little cul de sac area which was hedged and had shade from trees – the ground seemed level but I think a long lead was needed to access the electrics (don’t pay much attention to these things). Our nearest washing block was I think the newest one (with the piped music!) and was kept very clean. The other blocks were a bit more tired but it was all fine. The swimming pool area was also clean and well maintained but space may have proved an issue in high season. Free wifi in the bar area was appreciated but the bar itself was winding down during our stay so can’t comment on what it had to offer.
We saw the rules of the site being applied as the owners (Brits) of a yappy little dog were asked to leave after complaints. It was also really quiet at night but of course that depends on who is staying at the same time!
I wouldn’t know what a 4*site has to offer but I wouldn’t hesitate to return to this one again – it’s so nice to be able to walk to town for a coffee, the small supermarket and other amenities. It’s a good base for visiting places like Amboise, Chenonceau, Chambord, Azay le Rideau (visit the lovely little soap factory), Montresor and of course walking along the rivers.

Eaten Alive by the Mosquitos so be prepared and take some protection!
Site is accessed through the beautiful town of Loches, very narrow streets so beware if you are towing a big Caravan.
Wouldn't consider it to be a 4* but I'm not sure who rated it as such in the first place. Pitches are very large plenty of space and fairly private, weather was gorgeous and hot so cant really comment on the 'wet' reviews we've seen on here.
Very friendly English speaking staff good facilities although they are a long walk if you pitch up at the top of the site like us!
Toilets are not very private (outdoor cubicles at the side of pot washing facilities) showers are warm and large with plenty of hot water. Nice swimming pool with plenty of sun lounges. Snack type bar available but this was closed during our stay. Loches is a 10 minute walk away plenty of places to eat and drink. Place was spotlessly clean. Good value at 20 euros a night

We stayed here for 12 nights with a touring caravan and a tent. Both with super pitches. The booking process was easy all booked online and our request for adjacent pitches easily accommodated.
In my view this is not a 4 star camp site. Whilst the pitches were large in size they were no larger than we have used at previous French campsites and not paid extra for them. The electric waste and water were worth paying the extra for but the pitches were uneven to say the least and there were very large patches with no grass coverage. When it rained our family next door in their tent had a lake of water underneath the tent.
I only used the toddler washroom for my little boy (used our own facilities otherwise) this room was good with small bath shaped sink set at waist height so perfect for bathing a baby/toddler.
The takeaway/restaurant was overpriced and I don't think the bar staff were very friendly. The fries were good but pizzas from nearby takeaways were better.
Our children loved the pool area but towards the end of our stay the pool wasn't being cleared of dead insects very well and the locked gate to access was not locking so quite risky for any escapee small children.
Loches itself is beautiful and there is a beautiful municipal garden with great playground nearby. However the walk to loches from the campsite whilst convenient is totally spoilt by all the dog dirt dodging required along the path. It is just horrid and unnecessary as there were bins at the end of it.
There Is a lovely restaurant in loches that we visited (child free) called gerbe d'or which was well worth a visit with delicious food, great service and a menu with English
Subtitles.
Had a lovely holiday but that was more due to the company rather than the site.

We have just returned from 18 nights staying at La Citadelle.
We did only intend staying for 1 week and moving on but my husband fell off his bike and so we decided to stay put.
I have mixed opinions about this site. We had a great holiday but the campsite wasn't really 4 stars
The plus points:
The location in the Loire is excellent for visiting various places.
The town of Loches is within 10 minutes walking and a lovely medieaval town.
The site was quiet.
The pool was good - but they kept changing the opening times.
The bad points:
The toilets are not very clean and very busy
There is no soap near the toilets and no sinks near the toilets
The showers weren't always hot
The restaurant was expensive
The grand pitches are very big but very undulating every one had problems with water under tents when it rained.
I would return for a few nights but maybe for the price it's quite expensive for a fortnight's holiday

We stayed here recently for a couple of nights out of season, in April 2011, when the weather was lovely and warm and the campsite was quiet. The site accepts Camping Cheques at certain times of year. English is spoken by reception staff.
The shop, restaurant and one of the toilet blocks was closed, but the pool was open and was a nice place to go and relax away from the very many mosquitos which invaded our pitch at all times of the day and night (we weren't prepared for them and had left our 'Avon Skin So Soft' and 'Clearoff Lamps' at home, so got eaten alive!). Even our poor dog was besieged by them and she'd been treated with 'Advantix' mosquito repellent before leaving the U.K.
Mozzies aside, the site is really nice and within walking distance of the ancient town of Loches, which is simply beautiful and very interesting. It's worth going for a walk around at night as well as during the day, because some of the narrow streets in the old part are lit at ground level, which makes it really atmospheric.
The campsite is basically divided in two; take the left road past reception for the more shaded area, with trees and hedges (this is the area which seemed to be more favoured by tent campers and is where we went, but is also seemingly the area more favoured by the biting, flying critters! I preferred the sanitaire on this side, which was kept scrupulously clean. The background music in the loos was surprising and really nice.
There's an area designated for dog walking, behind the peripheral pitches in this area. The site owners also used this area for burning rubbish when we were there, which seemed to smoulder all the time and was a bit stinky when you got down wind of it.
The road to the right goes to some of the bigger, more open, all-service pitches (small extra charge) and pool (although the site isn't huge, so it doesn't take long to walk to the pool from wherever you are). The sanitaires in this area aren't quite so good (the loo cubicles are basically open air with a bit of a roof over) but then, since this area was used more by motorhomes and caravans, perhaps people are more inclined to use their own facilities?
The site is next to a river and it's just a short stroll along there, and past the municipal sports ground, towards Loches. Just watch out for the dog mess down the track next to the playing field (not everyone in France picks it up, sadly!) as it's clearly a favoured dog walking area and was a bit of a dog poo minefield. We were told it is possible to fish in the river without charge, and that you don't need a licence (I don't know if this depends on the time of year, though).
There's a nice play area for younger children, with bouncy castle and low-level trampoline. There's also a municipal swimming pool by the entrance to the site, by the way, which might be handy for when the weather isn't so great.
Pitch 27, where we were, is on a hedged green area, which can accommodate 8 pitches. We had to put our EHU lead through the hedge to the nearest hook up point and, if you were on one of the more distant pitches, you'd definitely need a very long lead.
There's a lovely park nearby but it was closed when we were there because a huge tree had been struck by lightning a couple of days before our arrival and the debris was scattered far and wide, even into the river! It was amazing to see and apparently it had been quite an explosion, causing people on the sports field to run for cover!
There are good supermarkets nearby (turn left when leaving the site for Leclerc or turn right and follow the signs for an excellent Super-U) and the nearest boulangerie is within walking distance; just follow the river path, past the sports ground, then cross on the river bridge and it's on your left).
All in all, a very good site and we'd certainly return there (but would definitely take every mosquito repellent known to man!).

This site is very easy to find. We visited La Citadelle during a rather hot September, and were very glad of the shade provided by the hedges & trees, and the cooling waters of the delightful swimming pool. The pool was not as large as we expected, but it was more than adequate, and there were plenty of sun-loungers. Beware of the fairly steep slope into the footbath, which can be slippery & there is no hand rail. Also there is no hand rail beside the steps into the pool.
We did not have a service pitch, but were in a cosy enclosure for 8 caravans - although there were usually only 4 there. In order to pitch at the end, a long hook-up lead is necessary.
The toilet & shower facilities were good, with non-slip flooring in the showers, which were large, & in some cases also accommodated a vanity unit. There was always peaceful, relaxing music being played in this area which made showering a real pleasure.
When we visited, it was late in the season & the restaurant was closed. There were facilities for children, including a bouncy castle (although no children there at the same time as us). Reception took orders for delicious bread which was delivered the next day, and also sold ice-creams.
There was full wi-fi cover on this site for an extra charge.
The staff were always friendly and helpful, and spoke excellent English.
The town was only a few minutes walk along a delightful riverside path which lead through the beautiful public gardens.
On two days each week there was a market in the town and it was a pleasure to sample and buy the local produce.
A wander up the hill through the mediaeval town brought us to the citadel, which provided a very interesting couple of hours, not to mention wonderful views.
There are numerous places within easy reach of Loches, including several of the more important Loire chateaux, such as Amboise & Chinon.
And yes, we will be returning.

Stayed for 4 nights but would love to go back again. Lovely site nice & flat with big pitches as said in other reviews we got to choose our own pitch! Loche is a beautiful town and the Citadelle is a must to visit. Only a little 'shop' on site but not needed with town so close. But still provided fresh bread etc in the mornings. Great range of routes for cycling/walking. Swimming pool is well sited and was always cleaned with a nice lounging area, very handy with the temps in the high 20's. Shower/Toilet facilities kept very clean all the time and the staff helpful and happy. Most other campers there were either on their 2nd visit of the year or would, like us, be coming back.

We stayed at this site (in fact, we are still here!)for 10 nights, but we love it so much that we are staying an extra 2 nights. It is a really friendly and pretty site and is very well maintained. Our family joined us for a week and stayed in the static caravans on the site, which were very clean and well looked after.
The fully serviced pitches (which we are on) are are mostly spacious and flat and have some hedging for privacy.
The pool is lovely, not huge, but adequate and very clean with lots of sunbeds. The bar area around the pool is spacious, clean and friendly with entertainment most nights a week. The food is good and reasonably priced although we tended to walk into town, which is only a 5 minute walk away along a picturesque river and have a meal there. Loches is a beautiful town, very, very pretty with lots to see and do.
Wireless internet is also available for a very reasonable price of 3 euros per day or 18 euros per week.
On the downside, there is no shop to speak of on the site. Drinks and ice cream are available from reception and bread and croissants are available to order the day before, but like I said, the town is only a 5 minute walk away, with patisseries, butchers, and supermarkets etc.
A great site and we will all definitely be back - ASAP

Arrived after very hot journey up from Auvergne. Chose our pitch, 10, with wonderful view of the Citadelle which was lit up at night. ! Loos etc all fine with hot showers.
The pool was smallish but warm, though it did have a lot of dead flies the second day we were there. It was amazingly hot, 35 in the shade and the mosquitoes were about though with my Aldi bands I was OK!
It was lovely to just wander into the town and up to the old town and citadelle. Well worth paying for a visit. Would go back again. Takes camping cheques.

We visited this site for 3 nights in August. It is a 40m drive from the motorway/ Tours/Blois area. The campsite is on the outskirts of Loches, a lovely old walled town with a citadelle on the hill, and lots of quaint shops and restaurants in the old town approx 10m walk away past some tennis courts and football fields.
We had paid in full over the internet, on arrival we could choose our own pitch of which there were about 6-10 to choose from. Pitches 1-10 area have a view of the citadelle in the distance, and a small new loo and shower block. We were on the larger pitch area, and had the swimming pool and volleyball/ table tennis in view, very large pitch with hedges/ trees. The smaller cheaper pitches don't all have hedges but all have some tree cover. They have 3 toilet/shower blocks, all different, 1 is ancient, 1 is virtually open air, and 1 new one. All were cleaned and spotless at all times, and the cleaner was always busy and cheerful.
The restaurant/ pizza/bar was well used, by it seemed by locals as well as campers but we always had no trouble finding a table and the food was very good and reasonable. One night there was traditional music, with a band inc accordion/violins/ double bass and singer in a long gypsy dress, very good, if unusual.
The play area has climbing frame and bouncy castle, the kids loved it.
We were expecting the pool to be bigger from the photos in reality it is small, it was very quiet however and always had spare sun beds. Surprising, as was August holidays.
The zoo at Beauval is only a short drive away. And the Loire valley is close. This site had a lovely quiet relaxed atmosphere and I look forward to going back.
