Hole station is an absolute gem of a campsite. It’s difficult to imagine any tweak at all which would improve it. The whole set-up is so sympathetically done, yet with such an exacting eye for detail, that you can only doff your hat to Greg the owner and thank him from the bottom of your much replenished heart. Very easy to get to following the website directions, you’ll find yourself in a small woodland heaven in the heart of some of Devon’s best and yet quietest countryside. The handful of pitches are magically scattered off a winding circular track through the trees. Each pitch has a thoughtfully provided shelter, fire-pit and log seating alongside a clearing for your tent. It’s a delight to do the whole circuit, exploring each vacant pitch, before choosing your own (that’s the most difficult part). The compost toilet block is never more than 60m away and is so well maintained (and explained) that I for one am a convert. This is true camping for people who come to really appreciate this beautiful environment. There is lovely cycling or walking in every direction and nearby pubs for an early pint or two (you wouldn’t miss the fire now would you?) we look forward to going back soon.

Just back from a 3 night bank holiday stay, and we had a lovely relaxing time. Great being in your own pitch in the woods. Back to nature.
Plenty around to visit, we went to tingagel castle, padstow, port Isaac, all lovely for a visit.
Welcome was great, and there are eggs laid by the resident hens to buy, also sausages, soup, and lovely ice cream.
Would recommend and we are planning on visiting again asap.
Thank you.

What a wonderful relaxing week we spent in the beautiful woodland at Hole Station. This is a very quiet site; no children, no radios or musical instruments and no noise at all after 11pm - just sit back with your fire-bowl in the evening and enjoy the natural sounds of the very special piece of natural woodland.
You are provided with a standard tent & airbed, kitchen area (2 hob cooker, crockery, cutlery etc. Provided) and a sheltered seating area with fire-bowl (wood/kindling must be purchased from the site at 6 per kit, which will provide 4-5 hours of fire - strictly no foraging in the wood).
This is not a place for parties or anything noisy, it is a place for couples or small groups to enjoy the peace and quiet of the woodland.

The site was pretty easy to find and well set out, some of the pitches were secluded so that you couldn't directly see another tent and all are set within woodland. Weather was rubbish but a shelter was set up over the cooking area which made things much easier in the rain. A lovely site, nice and peaceful and we got to enjoy one clear night, never seen so many stars. Lots of birds and other wildlife (a toad made it's home in my boot one night and a mouse got to our chocolate!)
We did bring your own tent and the campfire sets were really good, a tray of wood and kindling for about £6, lasted us four nights.
Toilets were interesting, compost toilet not as bad as it sounds but took some getting used to! Luckily it seemed to be emptied regularly. Showers and kitchen areas were cleaned regularly, this was a wooden hut but with electric showers and hot water. Be prepared for the odd creepy crawly invading the shower block for a back to nature experience. No fridge for food but a freezer for ice blocks.
Not really many amenities within walking distance unless you want to walk a few miles, but some nice pubs and a Co-op in Hatherleigh not far away. Bude was good for surfing, cornish pasties and cream teas. Overall would recommend and would go back. Much better than a field full of kids.

Other reviewers have praised the peaceful, special place that Hole Station is so I shan't waste words, I shall simply agree with them. I had never camped before and so the rent-a-tent option was a perfect way to try before committing to buy. I was welcomed to pitch 13 by a very friendly owner who gave me a guided tour of the facilities.
I had sole use of three tents (each sleeping 2) a covered, fully equipped cooking / dining area and a tarpaulin covered sitting space complete with fire pit. All was situated in a little clearing in the woods, private and sheltered. As a single female I was somewhat apprehensive about camping alone, however, I needn't have been. Hole Station is well off the beaten track and obviously attracts the sort of self contained people who enjoy their own company.
The facilities are basic, granted, but they are kept spotlessly clean. Solar powered lighting in the washroom means dim light after dark, and an absence of electric sockets makes the hairdryer redundant so don't bother bringing one!
If you would like to give camping a try and don't mind the lack of modern comforts (a positive as far as I'm concerned) then give Hole Station a try. For those who like clubhouses, late night parties, electric hook-ups and all the other fancy gizmos more commercial sites offer, this isn't the place for you.
If what you seek is a peaceful, no nonsense campsite, free from the screams and shrieks of noisy children, then Hole Station may just be the perfect place. As a first experience under canvas, I loved it so much I've bought a tent!

We have just arrived home from a week camping at Hole Station. I can only describe Hole Station as truly brilliant. On our arrival we were warmly greeted by Greg who showed us around the facilities including the eco-toilets, recycling area and washing facilities - all immaculately clean and well managed by Greg.
The atmosphere at Hole Station was great. People are friendly and easy going. At all times we felt safe and around like-minded people.
The surroundings combined with the people who run this site are what make it perfect! Quiet, beautiful woodland - we were visited daily by Robins, Minnie the cat and the rather cute dog. When recycling the chickens are keen to see what you are throwing away!
We visited the local pub which was fairly well priced. Easy access to Exmoor and Dartmoor make this site appealing to walkers. Also Widemouth Bay on an evening is rather beautiful!
If you like to camp in a place where you feel welcomed warmly, where it is quiet and truly beautiful - then this is the place for you. We will be visiting again next year and for many years I expect!
Strongly recommended *****

A really lovely site, with a very friendly and helpful owner, Greg.
The weather was pretty bad for our stay. It rained at some point every day, but we still had a great time here. Greg even went to the trouble of erecting a tarp cover on our pitch so we could still sit by the fire in the rain without getting wet.
The open fires are great to. They sell baskets of logs (all wood sourced from the forest itself) which last for a couple of nights. They also hire out cooking grills and sell venison burgers (very nice), sausages (didn’t try) and eggs (very fresh – they keep their own chickens). Cooking on an open fire in the evening was just brilliant.
The site really is in the middle of no-where, and the no children policy means it’s lovely and peaceful. The showers are good. The toilet is a composting one, which does take getting used to, but as others had said, they are not as bad as you might think. There is a recycling area for rubbish, where the chickens will follow you in, hoping you will drop something.
The site is in a forest. The Toilets and washing up are at the entrance to the forest. In the forest there is a main path that leads round in a large circle. Off of this path are smaller paths that lead to the individual pitches. This means each pitch is secluded. While we were there, the main path was very muddy in places, but this was due to the large amount of rain Devon experienced in the weeks before (and during our stay). We picked a pitch that was not too far from the entrance.
There are a few pubs in the area to visit, and Oakhampton is not too far away.
I fully recommend hiring cycles from Devon Cycle Hire in Oakhampton and taking a cycle ride along the Granite Way in Dartmoor, stopping off at the Highway Inn (most bizarre pub I’ve ever been in). I’d also recommend the half hour drive to Bude in Cornwall.
Despite the miserable weather, we had a great time here and will certainly try and get back here in the not too distant future.

We stayed here recently and despite the really bad weather we had a great time. The forest is beautiful. The owner, Greg, is very helpful, welcoming and friendly. The pub nearby is good and the food was nice. A really good peaceful, relaxing time.
This kind of campsite is not for the people who like luxuries, unless you can bring them yourself. The toilets take a little getting used to unless you have been to festivals before. It is definitely for lovers of nature. The forest is full of wildlife to watch and there are lots of local attractions to visit in the car or on your bikes. Greg is very helpful at directions and has plenty of maps in reception.
The firewood is really good value and makes for a nice evening sat enjoying several large drinks watching the flames dance.
I cant really think of anything to suggest to improve the site as changing anything would spoil the appeal and charm of it.
Definitely going back soon.

Truly felt privileged to have the opportunity to visit this site. If you love the idea of getting back to nature (with the added luxury of composting loo and shower) then this place is for you.
We arrived the night of the gales and torrential rain. It was wild! The delightful forest pitches sheltered us from the worst. The owners have overlaid the pitches with fabric and wood chipping which ensured they didn't become waterlogged.
We had brought our own kit and the owner bless him did offer us one of his rent a tent pitches as they have considerably more shelter. It was very thoughtful but opted for our own kit as we know it's battled much worse in the Beacons. However kind consideration is sadly often a rarity so the offer was greatly appreciated.
The rent a tent pitches are great. Complete with an outdoor undercover kitchen and fire pit area with benches. If you're looking for home away from home camping or can't face dragging a mountain of kit then go for one of these!
Campfires are allowed and the owners will sell you a kit with all the necessary but sadly the weather was against us. Also handily available are a number of provisions such as eggs, milk etc.
The surrounding area needs no review. It is stunning and if like us the weather isn't it's best then there are loads of sheltered/indoor attractions and of course many good pubs.
Great place!

This site is perfect if you want a site with no kids, screaming babies, snooty motor home owners, boy racers revving their engines and blasting radios.
This peaceful woodland site is set out with 20 individual pitches located just off a circular stoned path - just wide enough for the owner to help you to your plot with the golf buggy, as no cars can be taken into the woods.
The loos (yes composting toilets) were a shock, but absolutely spotless, and amazingly odourless, even thought the weather was sweltering.
There was only one male and one female loo, but when we stayed it was not a problem. The two showers and kitchen sinks were also nice and clean, and a social place too.
Much thought has gone into the site - from the fire pits and benches in each pitch, the full recycling area, and the loan set up for cooking equipment.
We had a very warm welcome, and enjoyed our stay immensely even with the early wake up call by the loud dawn chorus – we are looking forward to returning here at the end of the summer.
We did take the pretty walk to the 'Golden Inn’ but was disappointed, typical 80's pub grub and not great, very much a locals pub
