We stayed for 4 nights over Easter. We had one of the marked pitches in the open field but there is 1 large pitch in the woodlands and I believe there are plans to make more. This is further away so a bit more of a walk to transport your stuff (no cars on site but wheelbarrows are provided) but would be well worth the extra effort.
The owner Greg is very friendly and helpful and even arranged a trip to the local farm to get sausages when someone ran out on Easter day!
The facilities are basic but that I believe is the real appeal. There a plenty of campsites in Devon that appeal to the masses so its nice to have something a bit different. Its especially good to be able to have campfires and this is the real winner.
The owners have very recently installed eco loos (sawdust toilets). They're were instructions on how to use and were fine once you got used to them. Didn't experience any problems with smell. There is one toilet for men and one for ladies, 1 shower and 2 washing up sinks. There is also a freezer for icepacks and a library!
As has been said there were teething problems with some of the bathroom facilities. This was partly due to the fact that they were only finished the night before they opened for the Easter break! The Owner Greg did the best he could to help sort things out and I'm sure this will soon be rectified. But the toilet paper did run out at times so would suggest taking your own.
The pitches are of a good size and are covered in wood shavings. There was a rope swing for the children and this area was very muddy after only a couple of days. The wood chips provided protection from the mud. However it did get in the tents which was a bit of a pain but just shook of easily (unlike mud!)
The nearest pub is about a 20 min walk along the cycle path and does the standard pub grub but we didn't sample the food on this trip. Okehampton has 2 supermarkets - waitrose and somerfield however I would suggest checking out one of the many farm shops in the area. We got some fantastic sausages and eggs from a shop on the way to bude. They also did burgers and steaks for the BBQ.
This is a nice little campsite in a great spot within easy reach of Dartmoor and beaches. If you want Hi-De-Hi don't bother but if you like back to basics camping with the benefit of campfires then this will tick all the boxes.

'Site with great potential and a few teething problems'
We chose Hole Station campsite as it was one of few campsites that allow open fires and seemed to be designed as a campsite rather than just a field with a shower block as many other campsites we visit appear to be.
The location of the site was perfect halfway between the coast and Dartmoor, it is set well away from the road with a 15 minute walk (down a tarmac bridleway) to the pub. The site is difficult to find without any signs but very peaceful set in its own woodland.
Hole Station is a small site with 12 pitches. The owner is really friendly and it has a great feel to it. The pitches are marked out with woodchip rather than being able to pitch anywhere. The pitches are relatively close together such that we struggled to get to sleep with the person snoring the tent next door.
There had been a heavy downpour the night before and the site was pretty waterlogged. The pitch didn’t dry out all weekend despite some beautiful sunny weather.
The (new) eco toilets are in the centre of the camping area with one male, one female toilet, one shower and two washing stations. Despite the smaller number of pitches and the fact that the site was not full there was some queuing in the mornings. The male toilet didn’t have a lock which caused a few problems. The shower was electric so after running water for five minutes on the lowest pressure there was no hot water. The actual toilets are dry toilets which take some getting used to. The toilet requires that the bag is changed which seems fairly labour intensive, there were a number of occasions over the weekend when the bag needed changing (and toilet roll topping up) which resulted in a hideous smell.
There was no mirror in the toilet block, there was nothing to dry your hands on and there was no hot water in any of the taps. There was an electric boiler for the dishes that was usually luke warm and the supply was limited.
They provide a fire kit each night when required including logs, fire lighters and matches. This is a great service and the almost everyone staying the weekend was thoroughly enjoying the fires.
I don’t want to sound too negative as the site has great potential (on a stunning location) once the problems with the toilet block are sorted.

Arrived at the site after 50 miles cycling on the Tarka Trail in pouring rain. They could not have been more helpful and friendly and despite the fact that many people had cancelled because of the weather and the grass was waterlogged, they sorted me out by pointing me in the direction of a hot shower and offering me somewhere to dry my clothes, and I was made to feel very welcome. I didn't get the chance to explore the woodland much because of the weather, but that's ok - I'll definitely be going back to do that another time :-)

Just got back from a wonderful weekend at Hole station campsite.
Greg,Liz and family made us very welcome and couldn't do enough for us, very nice friendly people.
You're allowed a campfire which is all set up for you by Greg who also supplies wood for use if you need it.
The campsite is very quiet and ideal if you're looking for peace and quiet away from the madness!. It's situated well away from the road down a good track and is very easy access.
There's a wonderful nature walk through the 23 acre woods which are part of the campsite so not available for the general public, and there's an area at the end of the walk to sit and have a picnic if you wish in the woods. Everything you may need in the way of pubs, groceries, post office are a 15 - 25 minute walk away (depending on how slowly you stroll through the countryside)
The toilet and shower are located inside an old Norwegian railway carriage which is wonderful in itself and adds to the charm.
Okehampton, Tavistock, Bude etc are all a fairly short drive away.
I'd heartily recommend this site for the friendliness of Greg and Liz who make you most welcome from the moment you arrive, and the peace and quiet. Wonderful!. We'll definitely be returning.
