Excellent Easter weekend spent at Hole Station despite the mixed weather.
The site layout is ideal if you are looking for a peaceful spot, not too close to other pitches and with plenty of space around you. We had a great pitch plenty big enough for our four man tent in a lovely little clearing in the wood. This is camping in the woods, pure and simple, no frills.
It was Easter and the site looked to be full but in no way felt crowded, no waiting for loos, showers etc. Don't be put off by the eco loos, they were spotless and better than a lot of conventional campsite facilities.
Greg and family were very friendly and efficient and it was useful that they sold sausages, bacon, milk etc to keep us going in the mornings.
The walk to the Golden Inn is nice and it does good beer but the food was disappointing and the place was quite dirty. We walked on to the pub in Sheepwash which as very good and had a much more interesting menu - dressed crab, fresh fish etc.
I'd recommend a lunchtime pub walk from Hole Farm - The Golden Inn - Sheepwash - Black Torrington - Hole Farm. Circa 8 miles.
Will definitely be returning.

Had a wonderful stay here. A great place to unwind. We chose the rent a tent option and not only do you get a tent but a fully equipped kitchen/dining area.
If you want peace and quiet and to wake up to the sound of birdsong whiling away hours In front of a campfire listening to the owls then this is the place for you.
The owners sell boxes of firewood to get you started and we spent 3 lovely evenings by the fire pit.
The site was full but as the pitches are well spaced out in the wood so it didn't feel crowded.

We first paid a visit to Hole Station in June 2009, and liked it so much we came back this year. Our second visit was in August, we would have preferred outside the school holidays but work didn't allow. Improvements have been made which are all good, stone tracks through the woods to the pitch areas (the site is mostly in the woods), unloading bays have been put in at the woods entrance which are a great improvement, much less of a carry!
The pitches are great, large, well spaced, private and the campfire benches by the firepits are an excellent idea - this is pretty much as close as you can get to wild camping on a 'proper' site - love it.
The loo and shower block? Well, the loos are 'eco', and do lead to raised eyebrows the first time, but they are kept clean and there isn't any odour. Loved the showers, electric, plenty of power and good flow.
The washing up area and the showers etc were crowded at peak times, but hey, all sites are like that in August, we just avoided those times. I do wish some parents would take more responsibility for their kids though, they shouldn't allow tots to clog the place up when it is busy.
Recycling facilities are excellent. Greg the site owner makes it a personal mission to see that the minimum goes to landfill and supplies kits to campers that make seperation easy, a nice thoughtful touch I haven't seen on other sites, it should be compulsory!
What is there to do nearby, well, personal recommends would be the beach at Widemouth Bay, Lydford Gorge, bike hire at Sourton Down which leads into Dartmoor on the Granite Way, the local archery centre (Amazingly we both managed to hit the targets!), and the Otter Centre. There is more but you get the idea, it's outdoorsy stuff. The site owners know the area really well and lend out OS maps for local walks etc. , and will recommend other good places to visit.
We had a couple of meals at the nearby Golden Inn, good pub grub, reasonably priced, and a lovely 20 minute walk along the traffic free cycle track to get there, so no driving and able to sink a couple of pints of Spitfire without worry!
All round, an excellent site in a unique setting, we shall be back again, might try one of the Rentatent pitches, they were really popular especially when the heavens opened - brilliant huge tarp covered dining shelters!
If you like back to nature sites, this will suit just nicely.

Visited for 3 nights in mid-August. Party of 6, 2 adults, 4 kids (11, 8, 6, 17 months). Weather typical British summer, rain all day and clear all night.
Upon arrival we were met by the owners son, who gave us a map and showed us where the toilets/showers were. He showed us where we should park to unload and said we could set-up on any free pitch. Having been round the entire campsite Greg's wife caught up with us and told us that actually only Pitch 1 was free, which was a problem as there was no way our tent (8 berth hybrid Skandika Solaris II) was ever going to fit on it, and we did try any way possible to try and fit it on. After about 10 mins Greg came over and apologised, explained that several larger pitches would become free the next day and in the meantime offered us one of the Rent-a Tent Pitches at no extra charge which was good of him :).
The Good:
Location is unique with all pitches within the woods, very secluded. Our kids loved living amongst the trees, building dens and the woodland walk in particular. Being amongst the trees gave good shelter from both wind and rain.
The Campfires, just fantastic to be able to have a real fire, something missing from nearly all other campsites these days.
The Darkness, not the Rock band. The night sky as it is meant to be, hundreds of stars visible from the bottom of the site.
Food packs available from the shop were great, lovely sausages and bacon, free-range eggs were all delicious.
Greg, himself. After our first night in the Rent-Tents he told us we were able to have them for the whole of our stay at no extra cost which meant we had a fully set up and covered kitchen area - turned out to be an added blessing when the rain hit for 2 days !
Central for Dartmoor and North Devon Coast, lot's of NT and English Heritage stuff nearby, really enjoyed a day out in Bideford.
Good nearby pubs :) Best for food was The Torridge Inn in nearby Black Torrington, it does excellent food, is family friendly and has bloody good beer and proper cider.
The Not so Good:
Free-range pitching - the pitches vary greatly in size, and some huge pitches had for example a 3 man tent on them as folk were able to set-up on any pitch they wished, leaving problems for those of us with big tents. The website wasn't clear about this and there was no option given to book a particular sized pitch suitable for a given sized tent; something the owners should seriously consider.
The toilets. The fact they were composting toilets wasn't an issue, there just weren't enough of them, especially given the hike from the furthest pitches to the facility block.
The lugging of kit. Be prepared, pack light. The pitches are all bar a few some walk up rough and sometimes very muddy paths from the nearest unloading point (cars not able to get near pitches at all it being a wood)
No Musical Instruments around the Campfires. I get the no radio/Hi-Fi rules, happy with the 11pm no noise rule, but it was a real shame not to be able to play a flute or guitar around the campfire of an evening with the kids.
The Bad:
Mud. Bring wellies and walking boots. The soil is thin, and on top of clay. It does not drain well especially the paths at the top and centre of the site. The pitches themselves have drainage matting and bark on so stay relatively good, but off the pitches it get really sticky and sludgy if it rains.

I'm afraid a lot of this site was a big disappointment to us. We had been promised a peaceful experience where we should 'tune into the sounds of nature'. Unfortunately we couldn't hear nature over the almost constant shrieking of parents at their children.
Having some experience of compost loos, these arent the best and, at one for each sex, not enough to cope with the amount of people on the site.
Our pitch was covered in wood chippings which we are still finding everywhere a month later!
The local pub is lovely, nothing was too much trouble and the food was delicious.
Having a fire was good, but there are other sites which do this which we would rather use in future.
All in all, we found it a bit over-rated.

Stayed for a week in this wonderful campsite, in our own woodland glade with no other tents visible from our pitch. Incredibly peaceful (once the combines and cows went to bed!) Lots of wildlife around including many sweet wrens. We even had one explore our tent whilst we were in it!
Great to have all the recycling facilities. Greg the very helpful owner even gives you a little slop bucket so you can recycle your food waste later in the compost container. The chickens tent to hang around here hoping for some scraps!
You get used to the composting toilets quickly, but privacy is an issue with little gaps in the walls between the ladies and gents. Didn't bother me as a middle aged lady but might bother other people.
Walking up the cycle path to The Golden Inn is pleasant. They do the usual range of food. The main beer garden probably has the best views of any beer garden in the country.
The Torridge Inn in nearby Black Torrington does better food and better beer, but doesn't have the views.
Nearby village Hatherleigh has several pubs and shops and is quite charming. We visited the Tally Ho for an excellent meal.
We enjoyed several NT properties nearby; Castle Drogo, Lydford Gorge and Finch Foundry. Also the English Heritage run Okehampton Castle. All well worth a visit.
All in all a great place and a great holiday.

Lovely secluded campsite in the middle of nowhere - plenty of space around the pitches so no feeling of being cramped.
Facilities are limited but hey that's part of the attraction & it did seem to attract a good bunch of fellow campers. Compost loos were ok, could do with a couple more at busy times but a minor gripe.
Location is good for exploring the area but don't forget to get everything you need as its a bit of a hike to the nearest shop.
It is a wonderful site though & highly recommended - we will be back!

Rent a tent pitch was great, well equipped and fairly spacious. Thank god we had it because the weather was awful and as a result so was the mud around where we ate/cooked/relaxed.
Toilets were way, way too few. They were not emptied enough and on 3 separate occasions the 'poo' toilet was too full to sit on without the last persons toilet tissue touching your bottom. GROSS.
At one point during our stay there were 20 cars in the car park - two toilets and two showers !
Campfire a great addition. Wood basket lasted 2 nights.
Friendly chickens.
A long way from the nearest coast, 40 minutes.
Went to Torridge Inn, as had read reviews - food was NOT good - waited over an hour, got free drinks because of that but the fish batter was dark and burnt, same with the scampi, I was shocked. Perhaps it was a bad day.
Would highly recommend the half moon at Sheepwash. Very friendly, professional service and quality home cooked food of large proportion.

We are just back from our trip and what a fabulous week we've spent here!
We were greeted by Greg who showed us where the facilities and recycling was. He gave us a map and told us to have a wander and choose a pitch, we did and went back to let him know. He gave us a little 'food waste' bin to put all uneaten food in, to be placed in recycle bin at the end of our stay
Every pitch has a fire 'pit' which we had nearly every night. Fire 'baskets' which contain wood, kindling and fire lighter £5 and it lasted for about 4 hours. We also had a Swedish log, a log that's been chain sawed crossways almost through to the bottom, again provided with kindling and firelighter £5. It burns for a few hours and was an unusual alternativto having camp fire. Greg also sold Magical Fire Burner, a packet which you throw onto the fire which turns flames blues and greens! Our Son loved it!
Our pitch was just off the path and only the people from the couple of pitches ever walked past and we could just about see our neighbours, very secluded!
The site is very safe, our 8 year old Son made friends and all the children went and made dens in the woodland walk. The facilities consist of 2 compost loos, not too keen on these (sorry Greg!)one for each sex, also 2 showers - free. The loo's may not be to everyone's taste, they are right next to each other and there are spaces in the wooden boards that separate them! Might put some people off!
There is a freezer to put in your freezer blocks - free service. We put ours in a bag and the next day someone had taken them and left unfrozen ones in their place. Key thing is to get to freezer first thing in the morning to stock up! We found that it took almost 2 days to freeze blocks and bottles of water. This could be due to a broken/loose hinge and people not making sure freezer lid was properly secured!
Places to eat were The Golden Inn, about a 15 min walk from campsite food was good - huge portions, my Husbands scampi and chips would have fed the 3 of us at home! Reasonable prices, but we found it to be a little tatty. Sticky menu's and tables and the staff were standing around moaning about other staff, loudly so we could all hear, they weren't very friendly either.
We also ate at the Torridge Inn, it's a 5 min drive - if that from the site. Drive to cross roads on main road (there is a sign for pub) go straight over into Black Torrington and you'll find the pub on the right. It has a lovely little beer garden with lovely views. Lovely food - huge portions, reasonable prices and the staff were lovely and friendly! Would recommend this lovely country pub!
Our Son loved feeding Crash and Burn the resident goats, also the chickens.
For the nearest beach we went to Widemouth, there are two car parks and we used the furthest one, £4. 50 for all day and the beach was far quieter. Only thing is dogs are allowed and people were allowing their dogs to foul the beach, without picking it up! It has a cafe and loos.
We also went to Lydford Gorge (National Trust) it's about half hour drive and well worth it. Young children, dogs and those who are not too steady on their feet are not permitted to see the 'Devil's Couldron' as to get to it it's along a very narrow path with just handrail and sheer drop the other side into deep gushing water!
Greg was very helpful and chatty and had time if you needed help!
This site seemed to attract similar minded people looking for a lovely quiet and natural campsite. No-one was noisy and everyone said hello to one another and it all had a friendly and homely feel to it! If you're after a pub/club/kids entertainment etc. do bother coming here!

This site is truly unique, & won't be to everyone's taste - don't bother to go if you're after all mod cons, & want loads of noise and excitement! There are showers and wash basins, along with compost loos (which do take a bit of getting used to), but that's about it. Oh, & a freezer where you can swap your freezer blocks when you need to.
The site is beautiful, & you can set up your pitch either in the meadow as we did, or in the woods. There's loads of space between you and your nearest neighbour, & there are no radios/stereos allowed on the site, so it really is so peaceful. As well as normal pitches for tents, there are also ready set up units, complete with beds & a small kitchen area - 'wild glamping' if you will! They looked very comfy & an appealing alternative to pitching your own.
You can reserve fire packs in the morning, & there are freshly laid free range eggs every morning, which you pay for as you take. The owners are lovely - very friendly & helpful.
I really don't have anything negative to say about this place & hope to visit again soon! Wild camping has never been so appealing!
