We spent two nights on the site in July and the weather was fantastic. We were a party of 4 in two tents. The location was perfect being so close to fantastic scenery and local town.
The toilets were unfortunately situated at the top of the site. It would be better if there was a second block in a more accessible area. Whilst the toilets were cleaned we found they were often dirty and had no loo roll by the afternoon as the site was busy.
We were glad that we could barbecue and light fires however the logs we purchased from the owner did not burn well and we were not permitted to burn our own bought from town. This was disappointing as we were only informed after our purchase had been made.
The site has a no noise policy after 12pm which is fair enough as there are families on site. However it was disappointing to find that we were asked to go to bed despite only four of us having quiet conversation with no music, when we could see and hear other groups who were very loud and refusing to comply. This was particularly disappointing as at this point we had no neighbouring tents that we could of been disturbing.
In my opinion 6 per head, considering the very basic facilities and poor access is too expensive.
We had a fantastic day our on the river and took a lot of great walks which were fantastic. Local supermarkets are good value for money although it would be totally impractical to come here without a car.
If an investment was made in this site to make the road more accessible and signposted and to improve/enlarge toilet facilities this would be possibly the best campsite in the area and be worth the price per night.

I would recommend this campsite to anyone who is looking for a campsite with respect for both nature and the people staying there. Especially, I would recommend this site to international backpackers and single travelers.
The North of Ireland is not so used to (international) backpackers and as far as I have figured out on my 3 week trip in this region, this campsite is the only site combining these advantages:
- fairly well accessible by public transport. Busses 20 and 37 between Newcastle and Kilkeel are able to stop in front of the camping (just ask the busdriver) and in summer also the Mourne Rambler (bus 403) stops here. This enables you to go to another part of the Mournes, spend the day there and then return home to the camping by dinner time.
Walking to Newcastle would take you 45-60 minutes along a busy main road. It's possible, but not really recommended. A taxi into town would cost 4 pounds.
- has such a marvellous location. From my tent I could see the sea in front of me and the hills behind me, swallows above my head, . What more could you want?
- a fair price, although I can imagine for families it tends to get too expensive. But for me as a single traveller it was just perfect and I found other campsites in the North charged way more.
- clean toilet and shower facilities. It's true that on busy times it could get dirty in the afternoon, but well, it's a camping and not a hotel after all and they were cleaned daily.
I planned to stay here for 3 nights but ended up staying a week because I liked it so much. I was a single young woman travelling by public transport and staying in a tent. I have felt comfortable at this campsite at all times. Frank, the owner of the place, has the heart on the right place, treats everybody with respect and was open for any questions and always in for a chat.
This campsite really has soul!

Been to this site several times and love it. Really relaxed and beautiful setting. Only has basic facilities but always clean.
You can indeed light a campfire and Frank the owner is a lovely man. Site is only really suitable for Tents, campervans and small motorhomes.
The campsite consists of 3 small fields and a small toilet/shower block. You can pitch your tent where ever you want and there are some stunning views with the sea out in front and the mourne mountains behind you.
Great walks all around and Newcastle is a couple of miles down the road. You could walk but bear in mind there is no footpath, if you have children.
One bad point to note is we have found it quite expensive as the charge is per person and if you have a family this can add up and are planning on staying for longer than a day or two.

We stayed at the site a weekend over Easter and it was glorious weather. The site was easily found, just outside Newcastle, opposite the Bloody Bridge car park, a quick turn on the right with a sign post for Mourne Camping and a gate to close after you. It is steep and I got out with the two dogs to allow easier access for the car which made it up no problem although it is a four wheel drive.
The views are wonderful and the fresh air and it runs parallel to the Mourne Walk and the river, absolutely beautiful. Keeping the gates closed are essential to keep the sheep out and keep the site secure and the site is wonderfully well kept, fire pits, running water and toilets and washing facilities, better than I expected for first time camping.
There are great little nooks and crannies for walking, exploring, and for erecting your tent with privacy. We had a wonderful time and the dogs had a ball, all the freedom they could possibly want and a walk to the top of Slieve Donard on the Saturday was just the ultimate experience. The owner Frank was very friendly and helpful right from the word go and helped with providing us with heatlogs and blocks for the fire at a very reasonable price.
It was a lovely low cost break and good access to all facilities both for walking and for town access, we forgot to bring a few things as we all do and were easily able to go back into the town of Newcastle and go to Tescos where we were able to get everything we needed and more and there is also a wonderful camping shop on the main street called The Four Seasons which had everything and reasonably priced. Overall a fantastic weekend break and we all thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to our next visit soon.

We have stayed here happily a few times now but most recently the weekend after Easter when the weather had decided to improve. We were expecting a really sodden site after some pretty horrendous wet weather the previous week so it was a pleasant surprise to pitch the tent in beautifully sunny weather in simply stunning surroundings.
The toilet block and showers have always been spotlessly clean with plenty of toilet roll and handwash gel.
There are communal firepits to use and the owner provides logs for a few quid, we prefer to have a fire nearer depending where we are pitched so we are looking into portable bbqs so as not to damage grass etc.
In Newcastle and of course The Mourne Mountains themselves there is plenty to do, keen walkers would easily walk into town but its probably too far for small children, we have a 3 and 5 yr old who would struggle especially if they had to walk back.
There's a forest park and maze not too far away so plenty to do and see.
There's a Lidl and Tescos close by for shopping.
Our kids were happy running around in the fresh air but there is a decent park along Newcastle promenade at far end of town if they needed extra entertainment.
This is a cracker site that we hope to return to for many years to come.

Visited site last weekend in may. Weather fantastic party size 4 Adults and 4 Children.
Getting there: through Newcastle heading south on coast road about 3 miles there is a small sign for Mourne Camping 100yrds (bloody bridge car park on left) Slow down as easy missed. Gate right beside style to bloody bridge, open gate go through, then close gate behind you. Tip: as lane way is quite steep and uneven, it would be best to let passengers out of car, 4x4 should be alright. Then about 75yrds up hill another small sign pointing to the right 'Camp site' Again go through gate and close behind you, this is the lower part of the campsite you can drive on up track to middle part which has an other site off to right.
Middle site is biggest and has best views, communal fire pit at top right & on left small fire lighting facility. To aid conservation site owner supplies logs at £2.50 per bag which is very reasonable as he doesn't want people breaking branches & destroying hedges, which is fair enough. At top site are newly built ladies and gents showers and toilets with hot water. And outside fresh water tap. The site is very well kept and owner is very nice and easily approachable. This site is very good for those who enjoy a more realistic style of camping with just a few amenities. Is excellent site for those liking bloudering / hiking and having a base near at hand. The site also has two canvas tents with bunk beds to rent per night. In my opinion this is the best campsite in or around the mournes.

We stayed here for two nights. Really enjoyed the site. Toilets, shower cleaned daily and spotless. What we liked about this site is that it has no hook ups, you can light camp fires within reason and is real basic camping, all of which camping is about. The owner is helpful and friendly. There are plenty of walks which our three dogs enjoyed and some stunning views. The nearest is ten minutes away by car.

We spent a couple of weeks in the north of Ireland last month and stayed for three nights at this relatively new campsite.
The site is up a steep and fairly narrow track and, as a result has great views of the sea and of the mountains behind. We were the only people staying when we were there (probably down to the dreadful weather in August/September) which was ideal for us. It meant we had the communal firepit to ourselves and also were able to use as a cooking and eating shelter a marquee with bunk beds which the owner has provided for backpackers without tents - very handy on a number of occasions when the weather let us down.
Apart from the toilet and shower block (2 loos and showers for each sex), which was spotless when we were there, there aren't any other facilities but that is the sort of campsite we like anyway so loved it. The owner has left a wildlife area where the grass isn't cut so there is habitat for all sorts of butterflies and other insects. The site is slightly sloping and this and the steep track means it's not really suitable for caravans so it is likely to stay tent-only. We have an old VW campervan which made it up the hill ok though.
The site is not a square field but has different areas separated by trees and hedges so unless it gets busy you can probably get a fair amount of privacy. It is not a big site though so it could fill up quickly in the summer.
It is a couple of miles into Newcastle which is the nearest town so a vehicle or bicycle would be useful though not essential (I think there is a bus stop just at the entrance at the bottom of the track). Newcastle is a fairly big town with plenty of pubs and shops and a tourist information place so you won't be short of places to eat or things to do.
We loved the site and would recommend it to anyone wanting to walk in the area or just enjoy the views of the mountains and the sea. The owner was really helpful and happy to give advice on things to do and places to go in the area. In my experience, campsites in Ireland can tend to be more focused towards caravans than tents, so this was a pleasant change for us, although it won't suit everyone. Good value too - it was £5 per person per night when we were there.
