We went to Turkey Creek for the August Bank Holiday weekend. The owners are friendly and accommodating. The site is near to the Cotswolds to the North and to ancient monuments such as the Uffington White Horse, Wayland's Smithy and the Ridgeway to the South.
We went as two families and the children loved playing in the on-site woods and scrub land. There were pears and blackberries growing for the children to pick.
The charm of the site is the rustic and basic nature, the relative privacy and seclusion and the lack of rules. The toilet and shower facilities are basic but this makes it feel more like real camping and we preferred this to other more formal campsites. It worked on trust rather than restrictive rules - a welcome relief.
We arrived in torrential rain and heavy mud but this drained quickly within hours because of the subterranean gravel bed.
This site is clearly developing and is bound to grow in popularity. There is plenty to enjoy here and great pubs in the area.

This is a peaceful, tranquil location with camping areas mostly within a strip of woodland. We had a two night stay in our own tent and were allocated a pitch on newly cut meadowland – lovely and spacious. (Rather stubbly for flip flops and crocs).
To find the campsite look out for the red/white hazard tape on the telegraph pole as the entrance is not marked – the lane is very potholed. On-site, after pitching, the cars are parked in a car-park which leaves the pitches happily car-free.
Charles is a good host and keen that you will enjoy sharing his patch of tranquillity. There are goats, ponies and wildfowl around the farm which the children enjoyed seeing – beware the electric fences and also be aware that the guinea fowl start their morning chorus at first light if you are on the meadow.
The water supply is from a well and therefore can be a little discoloured – we were assured that it is treated with the appropriate filters and therefore safe to drink- it certainly makes a lovely cup-of-tea. Not sure if there is an ice-pack facility. No washing-up sink.
We knew from the website that the facilities are basic – 1 composting toilet and 2 pee stations (toilet seat over a bale of wood shavings). Although it was busy bank holiday we only had to queue once. Hand washing facility is an outside cold tap.
A bin for disposal of non-compostable items would be a welcome addition within the loo facility. Our teenage son didn’t like the fact that there were gaps in the compost loo door making it feel less than private. Also provided was a portaloo.
We loved the open fires (bag of wood £6, wood splitter available) and quiet space. We enjoyed paddling in the Thames just down the road (ask Charles) and a swim at the Windrush leisure centre in Witney which had lovely new, clean facilities.
Overall, a relaxing place to spend a couple of nights. The tipis looked very cosy.

Very relaxed peaceful campsite. Not over crowded and plenty of space. Owners are very friendly and maybe a little too relaxed. Camp fires are actively encouraged which was a real bonus for us!
We liked the quirky features such as the farm eggs every day and the homemade shower/toilet block (composting toilets) however by sunday these were a bit worse for wear. We do not mind compositing toilets but feel they needed a little more routine maintenance. There is no hot water for washing up, we did ours in the shower, which was fine as it wasn't too busy.
There is space for tents, campervans and they also have a pre-erected yurt and a bell tent. We stayed in the yurt which was lovely if a little dirty (we may be over fussy). We normally camp with our own tent but wanted something quick for a weekend away so chose the yurt.
Great for families, although we have no children, we were very happy to see and speak to lots of happy holidaying families. There were lots of families on site and it is very relaxed with children playing in the woods with free reign.
The area is stunning, plenty of walks, pubs and shops nearby, although it is best to go to the village by car as the road has no pavement. We would definitely go back but use our own tent next time.

We have just returned from this wonderful rural campsite having spent 2 nights there. We were also the only campers as we stayed Sunday - Tuesday so it was very special.
If you love getting back to basics then this campsite is highly recommended.
Charles, the owner, took plenty of time to show us the area for pitching, allowing us to choose where to pitch up and where the toilet facilities etc were. He also brought us bags of wood and boxes of eggs after enquiring.
The pitches are set around a lovely orchard area which helps to shelter from the wind and rain. The biggest plus for us was being able to have an open camp fire which we did have going most of the time as it was on the breezy side
The single shower is very large so more than 1 can use it at a time, the shower was clean, powerful with plenty of hot water, 50p gratuity box is present. There is a single compost loo for no 2's which was clean, non smelly and fine to use with sprinkling of sawdust after use(my 5 year old was highly delighted with it!) There are separate pee stations for females and males and again the use of sawdust afterwards.
We stayed on site for the whole time as the children enjoyed the freedom to climb trees, play footy, cricket, hide and seek etc without the need to be quiet. The highlight was for them to hear the peacock, the cuckoo in the day and owls at night.
The only thing that would enhance the facilities would be to insert a separate hot water tap for washing up, at the moment campers use the shower for this which was no problem for us being the only ones there but if it was busy then this could be a problem.
We will be back!

A lovely quiet, small campsite with lovely hosts. The glamping side of things (Yurts etc) looked really nice, but we were happy with our own tents. Good sized pitches, in the trees so shaded from wind and rain. Campfires actively encouraged, with eggs and wood for sale from the owners.
The Ladies 'P station' consists of a pile of sawdust - clean, non-smelly and much better than anticipated. The shared toilet for number 2s equally clean. Fresh sawdust readily available for both toilets and lots of roll. One very good shower, but only one tap for hand washing etc. Could do with a hot tap for washing up pots and pans (ended up using shower water).
No walks available from the site (do not be fooled by the OS map!) and the road too busy to walk down to the pub but lots of things to do at a short distance from the site.

Spacious sunny setting in apple orchard where we felt comfortable letting young children explore.
Separate car park away from tents so next to no vehicle traffic. Bit disappointed that nothing walkable from the site so had to get in the car for things to do.
Really great that camp fires allowed and fire pit provided. Site owner sells wood and you're allowed to forage (for dead wood) too.
Toilet facilities consisted of mens and ladies open air hay bale for liquids and a shared composting loo.
One shared loo insufficient for site when busy - had to queue more than once and by the end of the busy weekend the composting toilet somewhat overwhelmed and hay bale fly infested.
Also there was no lock on the toilet door, no hot water for washing up and only one shower.
Overall location and setting great, the kids loved it, adults would have liked it more if facilities improved.

We stayed at Turkey Creek over Easter weekend, 'we' being 6 adults and 4 kids, spread over the 3 tents.
As soon as we got there, Charles was friendly and open with us. He showed us all of the facilities and where we were pitched. We were in a corner, but with loads of space around the tents to spread out. All of the visitors were nicely separated from each other, to give privacy, without feeling isolated.
The loo/shower/ 'P' stations were clean and very green (no chemicals, all staw bales and sawdust).
Nothing was too much trouble for the owner's and were always chatty as we passed them.
The kids loved having plenty of space to run around and having the turkeys and peacock to look at and 'talk' to.
I can't say enough nice things about this site and I will be returning a lot in the future.
But please don't tell anyone about this site, let's keep this our secret! (Only joking!)

Have just returned from a fantastic Easter weekend of proper back to basics camping at Turkey creek.
This site is one step away from wild camping which is just what we wanted.
The toilets are the compost type (bail of hay for number ones and a hole with a bench / seat over for number twos) they are clean as far as this type of facility can be and they don't smell as anyone who has used these toilets at festivals ect will confirm, the owners change the hay regularly and there was always toilet paper if required.
The shower is supplied by an instantaneous gas boiler so always a good supply of hot water (a generosity box requests 50p per shower)
The camping area is set amongst a wooded area however there are a number of pitches that get the sun for most of the day.
Campfires are not only allowed but encouraged, the owners supply wood at £5 a bag and there is a log splitter available for use if required.
Pitches are far apart and the trees in between dampen any noise from neighbours.
All in all a quiet peaceful site with nice owners in a lovely part of the country.

I visited this site while doing a recci for a Cub Camp Reunion. I was looking for somewhere that allowed about 15 adult males and a camp fire. Also the immediate area was important for activities, eating and drinking. I went on my own with a one man tent and after a long hold up on the M25, I turned up tired and hungry.
Finding the place was no problem (Google street view, very useful) and I happened to follow Charles in who escorted me and another family in the car behind to reception. Anni and Charles were incredibly friendly, down to earth people and Anni spent at least 30 minutes with me walking around looking for the best place for my tent. Though Charles knew I was coming as I spoke to him on the phone, he hadn't passed this onto Anni who seemed a little caught out, but I found space for my tent away from a large family party who had 3 tents pitched around the log cabin.
The log cabin and the Yurt were an attractive feature for me so that my party wouldn't have to bring so much equipment and a member of our party has health problems and needs en suite facilities but unfortunately, I learned that the Log Cabin has nothing in the way of facilities other than 240v plug socket. The Yurt was rather lovely, like a harem, very cosy with a log burner and other facilities.
The on site loo is basically a toilet seat with a huge pit underneath it (Think Slumdog Millionaire) but being environmentally aware, this did not put me off, though that said, I did not have the pleasure of using it. I did use the pee station, which was basically a bail of straw, a great idea I thought and it actually smelled of straw as you pee'd!
The shower was fantastic, very spacious and hot, but I can imagine these makeshift, shed type facilities are very cold in Winter. Unfortunately there was no hot water for washing up, but I got around this by filling my bowl up with the shower.
At one point there were about 30 people on site so there was the occasional wait for the shower or the cold water tap. Fresh water comes from a hose attached to the house, so make sure you bring a container.
The noise was a big let down. I could hear the nearby A road and the occasional roar as a plane landed at nearby Brize Norton, however it was the family party that kept me awake singing 'Wonderwall' at the tops of their voices, their singing was actually very good and I myself sing 'Wonderwall' at home, but at midnight, I just wanted to sleep. There was also a dog barking most of the night, I think it was a neigbour's dog.
I recommend the site for dog friendly families or youngsters wanting a camping experience and cooking on fires, but watch out for the £20 per night, which is far more than some Certified Sites with better facilities.
May I finally reiterate that Charles and Anni are very friendly and accommodating which more than made up for any other downside.

We had a nice weekend with friends in a relaxed campsite. We had an open fire, a couple of barbecues. All lovely. There was lots of space to run about for the 4 children (aged between 3 and 6), wooded and open - they had water pistols and the weather was amazing - it was all good for them, I think. We had plenty of room and privacy for our tents. The surrounding area was gorgeous, and we had some lovely long walks with the children and went geocaching.
There were lots of animals (peacocks, chickens, etc) to see, which was fun, but they smelt pretty bad. There was a fair bit of poo on the ground, and also lots of nettles. Not great when flip-flops are involved.
The toilets were quite upsetting. Compost loo is one thing, but quite another is sitting (or standing, for men) in the open air and weeing into a hay bale. Didn't feel very secluded. The little hut for doing a poo in barely had a lock, and had little WINDOWS in the door! So you could see through?! Difficult to relax! My 3 yr old son didn't seem to be a big fan of the place, which he expressed by pooing in his pants a few times. I wasn't a fan either, but I didn't go that far.
There was only a very basic tap, cold water and it was a bit difficult to wash hands easily. We didn't try the showers, since we weren't there long. But they were 50p each. I thought the price of this campsite was too much for the facilities. It is nice sometimes to go back to basics, no doubt some people won't be put off by the compost loos, but £20 for nowhere to wash up, no proper loos or sinks, plus extra for showers - I thought it was too much.
