Just back from a couple of nights at this little gem of a site. As previously stated it is situated close to the A66 however this had no ill effect on our stay we will definitely be returning in the near future.

John the owner is very helpful and friendly and will point out the public footpaths etc. The toilets and showers are very clean.

We had one of the firepits for the evenings and it is a great idea and worth the couple of pounds.

It is just over 2 miles to walk to Barnard Castle if you follow the public right of ways be careful crossing some of the fields there are quite a few cows about.

The pub in Boldron looks nice however it was not open on Saturday afternoon (closes between 3 & 5pm) It is only about 10 minute walk through the fields probably not recommended in the dark.

Just spent a couple of fab nights on this site staying in a Romany gypsy living wagon. Owner John was very friendly, could not have done more for us.

Had fire lit for our arrival and kept us stocked up with wood. Even found us a fisherman's brolley when the rain started!

If you are looking for something different then the wagon is great. Cooked supper and breakfast on the open fire.

Also had own annex with private toilet, hot shower, kitchen with fridge, microwave etc. The wagon is situated in a private area with fantastic views.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Just returned from a fabulous weekend at Gallows Hill. Admittedly, the fabulous weather helped but overall it was a most satisfactory experience.

I agree with all the positives already posted: John is a great host; toilets etc are clean and functional; views are superb; locality is great.

I can't really find anything negative to say about the site. Other people have commented on the road noise: well, it is there but was only an 'issue' if we listened for it.

I would thoroughly recommend this site to family campers seeking a 'quiet', uncrowded and simple camping experience.

First time to this site and it does have a good feel to it.

The facilities are basic but the toilet and shower are very clean and well maintained, just what is needed. The field is uneven but plenty of room to find a nice spot.

Great view across the valley and had a pleasant night talking round the fire pit which was a big hit. The animals around gave it a friendly atmosphere and were nice to see.

Close to Barbard Castle for supplies and a nice point to base for the area. The nearest village Boldron has a good pub with some good beers though the menu, for me, was a little too fancy.

The site owner, John, was very approachable and welcoming.

All in all a great site, we will be returning later this summer.

This is a brilliant site and John the perfect host. Nothing was too much trouble for him. Stunning views.

Clean toilets, showers and washing facilities. Fire Pits are great. We sat out in the rain under a brolly with the fire pit roaring and enjoyed every minute.

Some reviewers mention road noise from the A66 but its not intrusive at all. Pub close by in village if you need one. Barnard Castle 15 minute casual drive away.

Bowes museum similar. On the doorstep of Bowes, Reeth kirby Stephen etc. The camp site is secure.

The ground not exactly flat but then we are 'camping out'. Definitely going back just as soon as we can.

Visited Gallows Hill in June for a weekend break, myself and my partner really enjoyed our stay, John is very friendly and made us feel very welcome the facilities are very good nice and clean and the views are amazing.

It is close to the A66 but that never bothered us we will definitely be returning and will recommend to friends and family. The ground is a bit uneven but again that never bothered us we just have to go buy some new pegs.

The site is very handy for Barnard Castle only a short drive and there is a Morrisons Supermarket were you can stock up on supplies.

The campfires are good and you get a big bag of wood we got two bags and they lasted the 2 nights we were there.

We will be back for another visit very soon.

Lovely clean site - well worth £6 per tent + £2 per person.

Field is not flat - but has many flat places to pitch, also quite hard ground - make sure you take extra pegs.

Also if you are a light sleeper take earplugs as very close to the A66.

None of the above issues bothered us though. John was lovely and couldn't have made us feel more welcome. The facilities were always clean, 2 toilets, 1 shower and small sink next to stables (marked as mens or unisex), then ladies toilet x1 and shower x1 with kitchen, fridge and washing up supplies.

Fire pits for rent (£2) and massive sack of wood (£2) available on site.

Walked to George and Dragon for a drink - lovely small pub with local ale and serves food (although we did not sample this).

Well worth a trip to High Force Waterfall.

My children loved spending their time befriending the horses and love the horse shoe that John gave them. They also loved the rabbits running about, the chicken that came round for scraps, the other chicken and its many chicks and the two sheep that escaped! All added to a memorable weekend away for them.

Hopefully will be visiting again later in the year.

Just back from an excellent, relaxing break at this site.

We were late in booking and knowing it was a Bank Holiday weekend were lucky to find this little gem.

As previous reviewers have pointed out this site is close to the A66 but this did not put us off and we are so pleased that it didn't.

We were told the site was almost full and that we were the last booking so imagined a crowded field full of tents. What a huge and pleasant surprise to find that a full site means around 20 people.

The facilities are basic but adequate and were always clean. The owner is a star, friendly and available without being intrusive and with a good local knowledge.

The site is only a couple of miles from Barnard Castle and well situated for this and trips into North Yorkshire.

The highlight, according to the children, was the fire pit and availability of wood (both supplied for a very reasonable fee) by the owner.

We will certainly be returning to this site.

My first impression when we opened the gate to the field was, Is this it!

Just a sloping field, with waste area, a tap, and us! But a fabulous view.

We picked a flat area at the top of the field, big mistake. Also ground quite hard so take good pegs for tent.

4 hours later a few other campers arrived.

John the owner had been to visit us, friendly guy who showed us the 2 toilets, 2 showers and a kitchen area attached to the farmhouse. Very clean facilities.

Later that evening it was so windy and raining and we were so out in the open, awful. So if you go please camp nearer the trees for some shelter.

Very close to the A66, in fact less than a 100 yards!so traffic could be heard but that didn't bother us, but it may bother some.

Rosie the chicken who wanders around the field paid us a visit.

In all a basic site with clean facilities and friendly owner. Oh and must mention you can have a fire and John has the fire pit and logs for sale.

Would just like to reiterate the opinions of the previous site reviewers.

We arrived without booking and were immediately made welcome by the owner. It was very quiet this weekend so there were no problems with the toilet/shower facilities, busier weekends may prove different, but there was another toilet currently under construction. The site was immaculate with great views over the surrounding countryside. The George and Dragon pub is a short walk across the fields in Boldron and they should definitely be visited for their home made food.

Ask about hiring a firepit (£2.00) and a bag of logs(2.00). The weather was not the best but was more than compensated for by being able to sit in front of a crackling fire.

Downside. Proximity to A66

Will definitely visit again.
