This was our first time in a tent since 1996 and so with a little trepidation we accepted an invitation to camp with 'the family'. The venue was chosen by the majority and we found out that we would be going native with no electricity!

'Weston Dairy' was equipped with lots of portable loo's and four portable showers, the loos were kept reasonably clean and were always full of loo paper and clean water and the showers were surprisingly hot at all times.

The camping area was huge and roomy and despite the recent heavy rain was firm and well drained, the cafe at the entrance was open all day, every day and served hot drinks and a plethora of cakes, and oh! were those cakes to die for 10 out of 10.

We were allowed to have fires in camp and dogs were allowed but a special mention goes to the people who ran the camp, nothing was too much for them, one day when one of the cows chewed the top off the water pump we were without water so they told us they would ship in bottled water, Jemmima was ever present so hats off to them.

The weather tried its best to spoil our stay with constant rain and winds that threatened to blow us to Kansas but the company and friends that we made cheered us up, my wife was dubious about camping but despite the atrocious weather and an injury sustained en route she has told me she would do it again and we would certainly recommend the 'Weston Dairy' campsite to anyone who isn't into 'Glamping'.

We stayed here over the August B/H weekend.

The field is huge, so even on a busy weekend, there was still loads of space and finding a level enough pitch was easy (we have a FC, so that helps).

The staff were friendly, although the young girl greeting new arrivals was a little vague. It's very much based on trust, with no labels to attach to tents or Reg numbers taken etc. I think you could happily pay for two days and stay a fortnight and nobody would be any the wiser. Please note that I am not advocating this, but merely noting their lack of organisation. When we came to pay, it was a case of 'who did you see when you arrived? How long did you stay?'

The shop was OK, but we didn't really have the need to use it.

As mentioned, it was a busy weekend, with at least 150 tents. Four showers and about a dozen Portable loos just don't cut the mustard for that number of people. I went for a shower at my customary time of about 7am and there was already a queue of over 12 people. These, along with the washing-up area (one cold tap and bowls on a bench) are right alongside the entrance to the field. After heavy rain on the Saturday afternoon, this whole area was just a bog due to all the car/foot traffic.

The walk to the beach is at least two miles along a poorly-maintained footpath, which really needs someone to go through cutting the stinging nettles back. Beware if you have small children. The directions on the map could have been better as well, as there are a couple of points where it really isn't clear where to go (and we went the wrong way at one of them!).

We didn't try the local pub (Square & Compass) but it always seemed busy whenever we drove past.

Campfires are allowed, which is nice, but it does tend to encourage people to stay up late and have a sing-song into the wee-hours. I don't think you would have much joy if you had to report a problem to the 'wardens'.

In summary, this is an OK site if you are just staying for the weekend, perhaps a little longer if the weather was good.

Would I stay again? No. For the money (£18/night + £5/stay per car) it is horrendously overpriced. Less than 5 miles away there are at least two large sites with excellent toilet/shower facilities for less.

This is the third campsite I have visited during the month of August and although beautifully located, the amenities are really basic - so be prepared! We stayed over Bank Holiday weekend, and it was very busy - over 120 tents I'd say - but in a huge field so didn't feel at all overcrowded.

On the plus side, the owners are really friendly and relaxed - you can go wherever you like in the field and there appeared to be few rules, apart from no noise late at night and no fires on the ground. There is also a fantastic coffee & snack shack on site, selling bacon rolls, homemade cakes, icecreams, plus dairy produce from the cows. Really great little bonus.

On the down side however, the toilets are just 14 portable loos - emptied every day and all with plentiful handsoap, toilet roll and air fresheners in each. Probably about as good as it gets for portable loos, but even so, they still smell less than pleasant in the sun, and if you are ill in the night with an upset tummy (as I was), a portable loo is not really the nicest place to be. Also, they are not lit, so remember your torch.

The showers are portable showers - gas fired and actually much better than I'd feared - nice and warm with a reasonable flow of water, but there were only 4 for the whole site, so they got a bit mucky with mud, hair balls and grass in the shower trays. Wear crocs or flipflops Id say. They are also very small. There were queues for the showers in the mornings, as 4 just isn't enough really. No hot water for dishwashing - just one cold standpipe on site, which gets very muddy all around.

Definitely a site for wellies if there is any rain at all. The entrance track into the field also got very muddy and skiddy. No electric on site, so you rely on your car battery for phone charging and no hairdryer etc.

All in all, a nice site for a day or two - take your baby wipes and accept you won't be squeaky clean - but I wouldn't like to stay there for more than a weekend because the amenities are just so basic.

Local pub is Square and Compass - cute but tiny and usually very crowded, though you can sit outside in the sun if possible. No food but pasties served (steak pasty didn't have much steak in it though).

There is a nice looking tea room in the village too, although didn't try it. No aprking allowed on the roads in the village but a large car park just behind the pub.

Nice walks to Chapmans Pool, Winspit quarry, even Swanage if you can manage the distance, but lots of ups and downs on the cliff path, so quite tiring and often hard work.

Having just spent the weekend there, I can say it was a very friendly campsite. The owners were welcoming and friendly from booking on the phone till departing from the campsite.

The toilets are portaloo's but they were kept very clean though out our stay, and the showers are single units to. Although I personally didn't use them my fellow campers did and they said they were very clean, but the hot water did run out at about midday.

There are some really nice walks from the campsite to the near by pub or to the beach, a map was given to us when we checked in. Corfe Castle and swanage sea front are both a really short drive away from the site.

Really nice campsite no doubt will visit again in the future!

Couldn't recommend this campsite enough. We were looking for a no frills campsite close to the sea for walks with the dog and a good pub, and this fitted the bill perfectly.

Although when we turned up on a bank holiday weekend it was pretty busy it didn't feel cramped and we managed to find a good spot. In fact on the last day when most people had left we felt a bit lonely!

The portaloos were clean and always stocked with toilet roll and antibac soap, far better than a toilet block in my view which can be hard to keep clean and are often a bit dingy. There is also a handy shop with well priced bacon butties, tea etc.

There is a footpath running alongside the field where you camp that takes you straight down to a small pebble beach (about 25 min walk), and would also recommend the National Trust East Man walk which starts from the field oustide The Square and Compass Pub (2 min drive from campsite) which had some breathtaking sea views.

The local pub The Square and Compass had a great atmosphere with some excellent cider, although I don't know what they'd do in bad weather as most of their seating is outside and the inside is very small! They do homemade pasties and pies but no proper meals which seems a bit of a shame.

For good pub grub would recommend The Scott Arms in Kingston, (although a bit pricey) and if you need a break from campsite cooking we had great takeaways from The Golden Bengal tandoori and the fish and chip shop, both along Swanage High st, a short drive from the campsite.

We stayed at Weston Dairy twice last year and have just returned from staying again. That's how much we like the site, the atmosphere, the location, the value-for-money and the people who run it.

Even over a busy August Bank Holiday weekend with good weather - and with plenty more people having cottoned on to just what a great site this is - nothing has detracted from relaxed informal charm and almost 'festival' feel.

More (spotlessly maintained) portaloos this year, more showers, more freshly cooked food on offer; plus John's diplomatic management of late-night revelry meant we had another outstanding stay.

The local pub, the 'Square & Compass', is superbly quirky and the Palmers 'Copper Ale' they had on tap comes highly recommended (. As do the beef pasties).

One small observation perhaps. And solely for the benefit of those unfamiliar with sites where pitching is informal. There's masses of room for everyone at Weston Dairy (and other sites like it) and pitching too close isn't necessary.

If you want the choice locations try getting there early - shoehorning yourselves in between other tents while folks are away for the day isn't going to endear you to your neighbours who've pitched a courteous but reasonable distance apart.

We liked this campsite a lot. The site is pretty basic so probably not ideal for 'glamping' but apparently an Aston Martin had been parked on the site the week before our visit. There are only portaloos and portable showers but there were plenty of them and they were kept extremely clean. The best feature of the site was the people who were so enthusiastic and helpful. They run a handy hut selling drinks, homemade cakes and rather good barbecued food.

The site was a bit windy but I think that was a small price to pay for being so close to the sea in such a beautiful area.

This is a really lovely campsite and I fully intend to return. Really friendly owners who have tried to think of everything to cater for what you might need. Yes the loos and showers are portaloos and showers but they are the good ones not the grotty ones so don't be put off by that. It is fairly exposed to the elements so bear that in mind when you pitch but the field seems to drain well (no boggy patches after one nights torrential rain). Top tip bring a bowl for your washing up as whilst there is a table with draining boards and washing up liquid supplied there are no sinks. That said this adds to the real feeling of being in the great outdoors here that is lost on a lot of campsites.

The Duck Shed supplies great cakes (well worth sampling) as well as teas, coffees, bacon butties etc. There is also an honest fridge in a gate on the left hand side as you approach the campsite that sells mostly bacon and sausages. Not sure if this is a neighbour or part of the same farm but handy to know if you plan an impromtu bbq.

The only negative things I will say about this campsite are about the pricing which seemed a little steep overall for what you get. 2 adults and one car for one night adds up to £17. However if you stay more than one night the value gets better as the charge for the car is for the duration (£5). The site is huge so car parking isn't an issue. So 2 nights = £29. The issue I have is that I have paid a bit less for a campsite that has full facilities including sheltered sinks with hot water for washing up. They also seem to charge for babies (other sites don't charge below 2 years old since babies really don't use much of the facilities).

We've just returned from an absolutely fantastic weekend at this superb campsite. A couple of the earlier reviews were critical of the facilities but I think they must have been upgraded since last year. The portaloos and four showers were spotlessly clean and I didn't see a queue all weekend. The campsite is in a lovely spacious field on a real working farm. Jemima and the gang at the hut are so hospitable and friendly we decided to try the barbecued food on offer. The burgers and sausages were proper butcher's fare and delicious. There was also a large selection of gorgeous homemade cakes as well as the usual drinks and ice-creams. As we left this morning some of the locals had just arrived for breakfast which must be a good sign!

The Isle of Purbeck is stunning with beautiful coastal scenery, lovely country pubs and pretty little towns. If they had been taking bookings for next year we would have signed up there and then. They only open for 28 days a year at the moment so it is a case of catch it when you can.

Just returned from Weston Dairy - it's everything you could expect and more. Great views, good walks direct from the field, very relaxed, level unmarked pitches and bags of space even when full. More loos and showers this year - very clean and never had to queue even though site was very busy.

Farm staff are on the field all day and look after everyone with a friendly smile.

Will definitely return next year, and hopefully the council will licence the site for longer than a measly 28 days and give this site and beautiful farm a bright future.
