Home from a roasting hot weekend on Skye where we camped at the fabulous Ashaig site. We were warmly welcomed by the site manager who was great with our wee boy (8)(and absolutely convinced him that the marker peg was for dealing with midges, ogres and vampires!)
Surprisingly less midges than expected, possibly due to the blistering heat and sunshine of the mid July heatwave. The site is a 'SMIDGE' stockist which appeared to work well in keeping the midges that were around away!
The site is exactly as described on the website but more than lived up to my expectations after having read previous reviews. Very quiet site, lots of room to pitch and have a campfire, lovely facilities with a lot of thought having gone into how to make it easy for campers to set fires. No playground for kids or anything like that but the beach is very near and there is plenty of room on site to explore.
The toilets were immaculately clean, a little busy in the mornings as there are only 2 toilets and 2 showers. The only thing I'd say the site could benefit from is the addition of another compost toilet up on the top area of the camping field to save having to drag small children down in the dark in the middle of the night!
I'd highly recommend this site, and would be keen to return in the future.

We highly recommend this site, after a bit of wild camping this place is what I would call luxury, it does all the basics very well. All the information from the Campsite owner's website are exact in detail, it was quiet, the shower block and toilet facilities are clean and well maintained, there was plenty of space between pitches. Tide times and weather guides updated daily on notice board. The cooking hut came in handy when the wind picked up. Although the site is next to a main road the traffic noise is so minimal that there was no disruption to us
The communal static caravan is there, if the weather fails, with table tennis, seating area and phone charging points. Very helpful and friendly Owner and Manager, we hope to go there again soon.

We visited this site but were very disappointed with the lack of toilets to the ratio of tents. Also the long walk to the toilets from the camping field when you have young children is too much in the dark especially as the field was particularly uneven in places. The signage around the site is very confusing, out on the road there is many signs advising it is a quiet site, yet the coffee and snack van is called the blasta van. Also the signage at the gate stating the owners may become aggressive if asked about space when the full signs are up left me feeling uncomfortable on the site. We did not stay as long as planned due to these problems, it's a step up from wild camping and has nice but not great views but that is as good as it gets I'm afraid.

Management response: In response to Ktvn ( I'm Tom, the owner of the site. ) He mentions not enough toilets for the number of tents, and the rude sign warning people not to try and get on when the full sign is up. We try and take no more campers than we have facilities for, thus the full signs quite often. We are then frustrated when people keep piling on, everyone with a ( to them ) pressing need to camp on the site. Eventually I decided that I needed a very blunt sign telling people full means full. Unfortunately some people still take no notice, and others are offended by it. Anyone have a suggestion as to a good way of coping with this problem ?
Secondly he mentions I advertise a quiet campsite, yet the coffee and snack van is called the ' blasta ' van. Blasta is actually the Gallic word for tasty, so I think I'm innocent on that one.
I'm sorry he didn't enjoy his stay here, and would maybe suggest he sticks to more upmarket, ( and probably more expensive ) sites in future. I unashamedly pitch the site as cheap and cheerful, more EasyJet than British Airways. |

Quietness was over enforced, we felt intimidated by the strict rules. Scared to make a noise in case we got in trouble. Couldn't park car close to tent. Didn't like the only toilet on site to be a compost toilet, so we chose to go in the field, as this was the same thing.
Shower was hot, except it was £1.
TOO QUIET! :(

Just back from 6 days on Skye (family of 4) and would thoroughly recommend this campsite. A wonderful sense of space and wilderness with clean toilet facilities and very welcoming and helpful 'Manager'. We were given excellent advice on where to camp based on expected high winds. Excellent value and location for exploring both Skye and the mainland, we'll definitely be back. Openfires and free supply of felled wood a bonus.

Selected this site for its central position on Skye and the information on the Web site. The views were indeed to die for. However that is where it ends. Primitive facilities that are not particularly clean. The site itself looks like a builders year full of half finished projects. Yes it was quiet. But close to the main road, and the beach is only accessible by crossing the road and walking down a path where a bull and his cows openly graze, so not wonderfully safe for children and dogs or their humans for that matter, although they seemed quite inoffensive I don't think you can ever trust cattle so care should always be taken. The saving grace was the hard working guy who stays in the shepherds hut. He was a god send for helping position the caravan and gave clear instructions on the showers toilets etc. , The pitches are very small. Not enough room to use an awning. Very open to the elements as well, but then it was Skye.

Site is as described on there website. The owner is very helpful. Views are splendid. From site up the back over the moor, view is fantastic. The pitches beside the gate view of hills and sea. Bonus getting discount being a camping and caravan member.
Shops are not too far away perfect site to explore Skye
Doesn't say it on website but he allows longer units in the off peak season. Stop as soon as you get in the gate and walk round to pick your pitch.
We will definitely be back to this site.

We stayed for a night here and it was lovely. Friendly welcoming in a pretty and quiet site.
Good location to visit the rest of Skye
For the eco friendly person there is a composting wc and recycling bins for everything.
Shops were a short drive/bike up to Broadford were there is a large co op.
Lots to do and see for all the family not far, we visited Colbost croft museum, Dunvegan castle and aquaXplore to name a few.
We will be back again

We booked this site partly due to the excellent and informative web site that showed that the owner cared about and had a passion for this site and its environment. In prior communications and in person we were treated in a helpful, courteous and friendly manner by the owner and his daughter. When one of our party forgot his tent poles a small tent was provided free of charge for the week
It is situated close to the Skye Bridge in the south east of the island and roughly midway between Kyle which is on the mainland and Broadford which is on Skye each town has a Co-op supermarket and a few other shops, Kyle also has a very good butcher.
The campsite is under development and currently offers accommodation for a good number of tents and mobile homes in different areas. We found one of many flat areas to set up our tent 'village' and enjoyed views of the Southern mountains to one side and The Inner Sound and the island of Pabay on the other. There were some queues for the unisex toilets and the shower at times but there are imminent plans to build a new amenities building which will be useful.
The cost of camping is very reasonable and based on the person rather than the tent, there are no set tent pitches giving a lot of options. Wood and the use of saws are provided free as are a few improvised portable hearths, I took an axe and spitting maul to dismantle pallets for burning.
The island is magical and well worth a visit, Portree is 29 miles away, Talisker distillery is 28 miles away and the Museum of Skye Life which is well worth a visit and from where you can see the Outer Hebrides is 51 miles away.
There is a wealth of information available from Tourist Information Offices in Broadford and Kyle. A place well worth visiting is Plockton, on the mainland 7 miles north of Kyle, we arrived at the end of the Regatta and enjoyed watching passers by being taught Scottish dancing in the closed of main street.
We were also fortunate in being there when the Portree Highland Games were held and had a good day out there. A variety of boat trips are available from the Island and Kyle and Plockton as are ferries to other islands.
Being where it is you can expect to encounter midgies and the local shops sell various lotions such as 'Smidge' and, for the sensitive folk, head nets, if you are sensitive to insect bites then packing anti-histamines may be a good idea.
All in all I can unreservedly recommend Skye, Lochalsh and this campsite.

Stayed one night here in Aug 2011, site was very basic indeed, very rough ground pitches, a few more toilets, showers etc would be a good plan as site was very busy.
This site is not as quite as it seems very busy main road, main route on and off island, just feet from some of the pitches. Campfire areas were a good idea wish more sites offered this, there was even loads of wood.
Moved on after first night due to road noise and very wet ground. No facilities shops, pubs etc within walking distance.
