We had a one night stay at Champ's Field to try out our newly purchased tent and we are hoping to go back for a longer stay soon.
The site was an easy drive from York and well signposted in the village. There is only the farm shop on the site and a pub in the village, but we were recommended lots of things nearby.
The shower and toilet were new and spotlessly clean, however there is only one of each. The availability of the bad weather shelter (complete with fridge and kettle) was amazing for a campsite of this size, and some local information and children's toys were also stored in here.
Champ's Field is a great small site, but the real highlight is the owners, who were all very welcoming.

We have just returned from an absolutely superb weekend at Champ's Field.
We were looking for an intimate campsite that allowed groups, in a farm environment and had a facility for an open fire, tall order, then we came across champs field, which ticked all the boxes and upon further reading of their website we found out that we could rent the whole field for ourselves - WOW!
So we had exclusive use for the whole weekend, which was marvellous as we are a group with ten children between 1 and 4, so we all camped in a ring allowing the kids to play in the middle, perfect.
We really fell on our feet. The field was exactly what we were after-big enough for all of us, but small enough to feel cosy and be able to know where the children where at all times. The owners couldn't have been more accommodating- even allowing our little people to borrow trikes and pedal cars!
The open fire was a huge draw for us and the woodpile was a great asset, at £5 a barrow load of wood there was no reason not to gather around the campfire every night, and the shop even sold marsh mallows which tasted superb toasted on sticks, this was a first for me and now I'm hooked!
The camp shop was a real hit with us all- covering most of the basics, if it was shut then we just had to ring the bell and Angela would open up for us. What really made it for us was the great selection of steaks from their own stock, fillet, sirloin, ribeye, rump, so Saturday night was steak night, and the meat from the farm was superb. We were able to use the tables in front of the shop to seat us all in style.
The showers and the loo were very good for a camp site and the storm shelter was a definite advantage, what a great idea to have an electric kettle, so tea and coffee making isn't a faff when it's wet and windy, the socket was used for phone charging and baby steriliser. No electric hook up for our vintage caravan so it was good old 12 volt, everyone else was in tents so no prob for them.
The local village of Colton is very picturesque with some nice foot paths and walks. Bolton Percy Church is well worth a walk/drive- the stained glass windows are amazing- especially the ones by Burne-Jones.
The village pub looked like it did amazing food- very gastro- but we didn't book for Sunday lunch-which looked good but pricey- and so we were disappointed as its very popular.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have booked again for next year- reviewing the site is a double edged sword- we'd like to keep this site a secret but that seems unfair on the owners. If you're after a heavily regulated site with amusement arcades, hard standing set out pitches then champs field isn't for you, but if you are after a beautiful field, set in a gorgeous village with excellent steaks then this is the place to be, especially if you are planning a get-together.

Easy to reach. Nice small field, a bit uneven, but ok if you pitch in the right place, good for booking as one party, we had about 6 tents and a caravan and we booked the field to ourselves, we had lots of children and they were welcome to look around, with supervision.
Toilet and shower facilities very close and nice and clean. Shower in particular very nice.
There is a farm shop there too selling produce from the farm - we had a beautiful steak cooked on the fire pit in the field.
Good time had by all and would return.
Only improvement if any at all is that it needs somewhere to wash pots for tent dwellers

If you are looking for the perfect base for exploring the city of York and surrounding area, Champs Field just may be it. We stayed for the last weekend in July and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and can't wait to go back.
This small site, (it caters for a maximum of 5 units), is based on a working smallholding which has a small shop selling organic & locally produced vegetables and meat (great for a bbq!). The owners are very friendly and welcoming and do not overburden you with rules and regulations.
The toilet area was always clean and tidy with a plentiful supply of loo roll. Next door is a shower, costs £1 for ample time, this may seem expensive to some, but the shower unit was brand new and better than our own shower at home, well worth it. Attached to the toilet block is an area with an electic kettle in which you may sit in bad weather and have a pot of tea, play cards or games and view the tourist leaflets left out, nice touch.
The pitches are organised around a fairly level field, 8 berth tents will struggle to find a flat pitch, but we managed with a 6 berth Vango tent. The field was cut to a suitable length, just long enough to be comfortable under the groundsheet. There are a few thistle type weeds growing in the grass (they are cut very short but I would say running around barefoot could be painful if you're not careful. Unfortunately, there are no electric hook-ups on this site.
Campfires are allowed! The owners have a dedicated area with seating to enjoy camping how it is supposed to be. Our family sat happily toasting marshmallows and hotdogs on sticks. The wood was supplied at £5 for a wheelbarrow full, including kindling and firelighters, this was enough to last two nights.
Within 5 minutes walking distance is one of Yorkshire's finest 'gastro pubs'. If dining is your thing, Ye Old Sun Inn at Colton will most likely please serving real ales, fine wines and good food, it is however quite a bit more expensive than the usual pub grub.
The site is situated around 10 minutes drive from York 'park and ride' at the massive Tesco store in Askam Bar. The bus into York then takes just under 10 minutes, parking is free and the bus costs £2. 40 return per adult, which includes 2 children. A lot cheaper than parking in York!
All in all, this a great little site for back to basics camping, with reasonable charges and access to York, Leeds, Harrogate all within half hours drive.
