We have just spent possibly the most relaxing 3 days at Inwood just outside Basinstoke. This site is the partner to Forgewood near Tunbrigde Wells, which we have used twice.
The ethos is simple - 'proper camping' so no caravans, no electric hook up, and very few restrictions (no loud music for example). Inwood takes this a step further, in that there are very few facilities on site (4 portaloos, 1 compost loo, 2 portashowers and 1 wash up point).
What you do get in return in peace to enjoy some spectacular woodland, the choice of where you want to pitch - literally, and a laid back but welcoming and helpful approach from the staff (mainly Pablo).
It sounds like the stuff from Ray Mears - pitching your tent in the woods, collecting wood for your open camp fire etc, and for the most part it is.
The practicalities of living ala Ray are: the site is fairly close to the M3 - there is an audible hum most of the day, but as anyone who has camped anywhere in the south east can affirm, being under a flight path is much louder, and more likely to happen, particularly at unreasonable hours.
The portashowers are very small, but the site provides plenty of hot water, and most importantly if you have young children the shower heads are detachable and no push buttons to keep the water flowing. Also as the showers are so small, but self contained, no shock of stepping out into the dressing area to find it 10 degrees cooler!
The site is pretty remote, but a decent sized supermarket is only a 10 minute drive away. The nearest village is 2 miles away. The local pub (The jolly farmer) has a very welcoming attitude and excellent food for reasonable prices. It is a relatively safe walk to the pub, but probably not at night.
It is remote (relatively speaking) and it is basic, but in return you get camping like it used to be - sensible restrictions in spectacular locations, but with minimal facilities. None of the families with young children that were there the same time as us seemed to mind the lack of facilities, but the children, and I suspect more so the parents enjoyed the freedom for all of them to play in the mud, collect wood and watch the camp fires.
If you are not sure if this level of camping is for you yet, we cannot recommend Forgewood enough. If you want something a bit less controlled and more relaxed, and are willing to lose a little of the comforts we take for granted, then try this site. We will definitely be going back if it is open next summer.

The location is large and freestyle. We found a clearing in the woods that suited our tent, and collected enough wood for a decent fire.
There were another ten or so tents on the site, but all so far away we felt almost alone. The children could build hides and run around, and we had a great time.
The warden was welcoming and helpful, but not intrusive, and he was visible on his quad bike throughout the day.
The loos and showers were clean, the washing-up area was fine, and what else do you need?
You might struggle to find a multi-tent site in the woods (the trees do rather get in the way), but there are open spaces that are suitable. For a taste of rather wilder camping than usual it is great.

Perfect site for a wild experience surrounded by the nature. The staff is helpful and easy-going. I would advice it for a romantic weekend with partner or for a fun night with friends.
Nobody will make any fuss. Barbecue allowed !

Well. I love the idea of pop up campsites, however as this site is 5 minutes from our house, and Nick kindly let us bring our van (which has it's own toilet!) it's a shame it isn't permanent.
I can't rate the facilities as we didn't need to use them however, the surroundings were spectacular. There was a bit of noise from the M3 but I don't know if it's just because we knew it was there!
We were shown to our pitch and we could have been the only ones there. We stayed for 1 night but are hopefully going back this weekend with a group of friends.
Great site and have already recommended it to my camping buddies. It is very wild though, so plan for it.

Real opportunity for wild camping with the only downside being very distant hum of the motorway and only from certain parts of the site. I did not hear it from my tent but it could be heard if you really listened, from near the toilets which isn't a problem.
We pitched just inside the woods next to the grass area where you enter the site, mainly because we were only staying one night. We had a fire close to the tent, just outside the woods.
I walked our dog around some of the woodland and this site is huge, there are many areas you can drive to- or you can get a lift on the trailer with your gear if you wish to get even further away from it all.
The biggest problem when selecting your pitch is that everywhere is gorgeous and fantastic for kids to explore and make dens, play hide-and-seek and generally be kids in the old-fashioned way.
My son (11) loves campfires so we bought wood for a fiver, this was enough to keep the fire going till morning and have 4 logs left over. There is an excellent washing up area, and porta-shower units which provided very hot water but no light so do use them when there is enough daylight to see, which I didn't.
The campsite owner was extremely helpful, lending me a map, delivering the wood to our pitch and, when my car wouldn't start he tried to jump start my car, followed by a tow off the grass and even lent me his phone to call the RAC.
I would love to visit this site again, although it costs a bit more than I usually pay, but showers are free, and so was the cup of tea while waiting for the car problem to be resolved.
We definitely got value for money. The site was well signed from the closest village and as it is about ten mins from basingstoke, it isn't far to go if you do need to stock up on supplies.
I look forward to exploring more of the woods in the near future, without the rain and car problem with luck.

This is one of my favourite campsites because it is so wild.
The site is beautiful and spacious. You can spend a weekend without seeing any of the other campers. There are a few clearings but it is mostly woodland.
The downside is the facilities (portable showers and toilets although I hear they have been upgraded). However, I personally think the very basic facilities add to the charm of the site.
You also don't get much sun if you are camping in the woodland, but you really can't have the best of both worlds.
The only real disadvantage is that because the site is so quiet, you can sometimes hear traffic noise. I think this is more noticeable because the site has the feeling of being completely wild.
Fires are allowed (responsible campfires are encouraged).
I couldn't comment on the surrounding areas as we spend all our time on the site as we enjoyed it so much. There is however a big Sainsbury's in nearby Basingstoke.
The site can be a bit tricky to find, so have a look at the directions before you go instead of relying on the post code.

Absolutely fantastic camp site. All the kids thought it was great. We had a fire so the kids could do marshmallows, the compost toilet was very close and its a great place to go gruffalo hunting. Everyone of us loved it. Its so peaceful. We had our 2 big tents in one little area together which was brilliant plus we were allowed the dog as well. The owners are really friendly too. We didn't use the main facilities as they were right down by the main entrance. We probably would have if we had been staying longer. Its a lovely place to walk round. We had our fire log bought to our little camp site.
