A lovely little site right next to Chesil Beach and the Fleet. It has everything you could possibly need and is only a stones throw from the village centre with shops, pub etc. The bus service into Weymouth is frequent so there are plenty of options even on a rainy day.
The ladies shower units were really nice and modern. I did, however, have to take a very cold shower as they seemed to have run out of hot water. The site was only half full so if they run out of hot water that quickly, I can see a potential problem in peak season. It may be that this was a one-off, but it certainly didn't make for a nice experience on a cold May morning!
Other than that I can only say good things about it and the cold shower won't stop us from visiting again. If they can sort out that bit, I'd give it 10 out of 10!

Stayed with 2 grand daughters for 8 days on a hard standing serviced pitch.
The pluses for the site are the great views, the animal farm for the children, the location close to the main Weymouth bus route and shops at Wyke and the great attitude of the owners.
The laundry is very good. There were no problems filling aquarolls or disposal of waste water.
On the negative side access is not easy with a caravan, especially when the site is busy. Also on the final weekend the place was full, the toilet and showers were not sufficient for the numbers. Under these conditions it is difficult for the facilities to be kept clean. Unfortunately some holiday makers leave things in a deplorable state after use.
I would recommend this site, however beware of the popular weekends.

I think this is sadly a site we will not be returning to. There were only 3 showers in the ladies, which were not kept very clean. I would prefer not to shower with the previous users body hair stuck to the floor of the shower! The site felt generally neglected, I thought the B & B was of more priority to the owners. The location is very good, with good sea views and good walks in area. No shop. Unhygeinic hand towels in gents toilet, with use of cotton towels, which were grubby. Gents toilets sounded like they need some upgrading! Very long walk (very rough ground) to showers and toilets. One tap in the distance to cover site. Would not recommend. Strangely, no receipt for the deposit - all other sites have always emailed or posted this.

Management response: Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review and we're really pleased you enjoyed our location here on the spectacular Jurassic Coastline.
We're a small site and are constantly upgrading it. This year we've added hard standing pitches and a covered area for washing up so our campers don't get wet. Last year we built a beautiful new ladies' shower block which has been very well received. As you can see from other reviews cleanliness is extremely important to us and it has been noted that our showers are cleaned and replenished with towels, toilet rolls and soap twice daily. Of course it's impossible to clean every shower each time they are used! Gent's toilets are now stocked with paper towels. Our site is on clay so we've added gravel to the pathways to avoid mud and puddles.
The water tap is at the entrance to the field and our small farm shop is in the farmhouse porch. We sell homemade jams and marmalade, our own free range bantam, chicken, duck and goose eggs, our Martleaves reared lamb sausages and produce from the garden when available.
Receipts are always available on request.
Additional staff would be required to e mail and post receipts which would then mean an increase in site charges I'm afraid.
We hope you find somewhere more to your liking in the future. |

We stayed at Swallow's Rest in June 2015 in a motorhome on one of the new hardstanding pitches. The site was lovely, tidy and quiet with beautiful views. The children really loved watching the lambs from the window and playing with the pigs in the garden! The site is near to shops and bus stops and we used the bus to get to the town and beach. Site facilities were lovely and clean and even though there are only three showers in the ladies block, we never had to wait for them to be available.
This is a lovely campsite that we will return to if we are ever in the area again.

Dont be put off by the drive to this site, once you are on the field its location location. It has stunning views across the fleet, chesil beach and the sea beyond. There is a short walk down to the feet and footpaths can be followed. Its also possible to swim in the fleet. We found Weymouth to be very cycling friendly. A short 5 minute ride down to the Ferrybridge and routes picked up from there. The facilities were fine and kept clean. The warden was very helpful and friendly. Its a 5 minute walk to shops and bus stops. Its definitely a site to return to.

We camped at Swallows Rest 1-3 May 2015. The new hardstandings are excellent and the EHC convenient placed. There is easy access to fresh water, grey water disposal and chemical disposal. (The later is functional and adequate and will need some attention in time). The farm shop had a good quantity of eggs, jams, etc and enough to satisfy our needs. There is good access to the bus stops and mini stores less than half a mile from the site.
This is a working farm, and there are loads of things to see, the horses, sheep, elpakeers; there must be chickens and ducks nearby, somewhere! It was a delight to see the show horses being exercised in the arena area. The costal path runs parallel with the farm perimeter near the oyster beds.
We bused into Weymouth, which is a typical seaside town, there were plenty of attractions, kite flying, sand building and fun fair attractions. Nothe Fort is an excellent example of how different organisations have pulled together and created a first class attraction. Believe me it was impressive and well worth the visit.
Thank you to Keith & Jane and the wardens and staff at Swallows Rest; have an excellent season. Tricia

NEVER AGAIN! Site proved difficult to get to and once there the touring field was closed due to wet weather so we were parked on the road to the horse field side on! At one point 4 vans were parked within 2 feet of each other. Lovely views from the right side of our van, sadly the left view was a big pile of steaming horse dung! Toilets were clean however only three so could be tricky if site gets busy with campers. Despite signs around the livery yard clearly stating NO PARKING horse owners were parked everywhere making departure very hard and nearly impossible as our van hit one of the stable roofs, thankfully no damage but help was not offered and the horse owners were very rude, the field to walk the dogs was unaccesible due to the weather, not the owners fault but no mention of this or the touring field being closed in bad weathers is mentioned. The owner however is a polite man, however too many negatives for me to wish to return.

Management response: We're sorry to hear of your bad experience at Martleaves Campsite.
Unfortunately you stayed with us for four nights before letting us know you were unhappy. We always refund campers if they're unhappy, which is very rare, but as you hadn't paid and didn't pay then I'm not sure what we could have done!
As you said all the other sites were closed due to bad weather so you had nowhere else to go!
Our site here on the Jurassic Coast is on clay so its hardstanding pitches only during the rainy season.
Access is never a problem if you follow the directions on line. Drive along Portland Road to the traffic lights, turn right then right again. Then 2nd left into South Road.
We have 7 toilets for campers to use, 3 in the new ladies' shower block, 2 in the men's shower block and two more on the yard.
We are a farm and the manure was there to be spread over the field.
We don't have a field for dog walkers, just the footpath down to the sea and the South West Coastal Path.
We're constantly upgrading the site, we now have 6 hardstanding pitches with 6 metres of grass between for awnings.
We hope you find something more to your liking in the future. |

Five very relaxing nights. Spotlessly clean toilets and showers are found here. Short walk to the Fleet and the coastal path is a delight to walk. Pub and shops are a short stroll away, petrol station not too far, but supermarkets are mostly the other side of town, although a Tesco Express is about five minutes in the car and includes petrol station. The only downer for us were the horse flies, but staying on a livery and working farm, to be expected. Getting to the site could prove difficult if pulling a large van or trailer, but don't let this put you off visiting.

Beautiful location. Wherever you pitch there are beautiful views of the fleet. The whole site was very clean and well looked after. It was lovely and quiet although still things going on, my daughter especially loved watching the horses being led passed our motorhome and jumping in the yard. The short walk two minute walk to the small cove was great, my Labrador especially loved this. Also there was a lovely bike ride all the way to Weymouth centre, which took about 15 minutes with no cars etc. It was an old railway track which was tarmacked over and had beautiful views. Kids and dog loved it definitely be returning.

The approach to this site is through a dense urban area, care is needed bringing big units through as double parking on the approach roads can be challenging.
The first thing you see currently as you go in to the site is a building site with large diggers etc followed by a faint smell of drains as they are reinforcing the sewer.
The campsite is set over two fields with the first field being the main site with limited hook ups near the toilet block/ showers. Our first impression was of being packed in too close to your neighbour in a somewhat haphazard fashion, no clear spaces organised between pitches. We realise that it is high season but the whole ethos here seems to be to pack as many people in as possible regardless of safety, we had a large tent barely three feet from the offside of the caravan and a caravan about four metres from the near side. I. E. Less than recommended safety margin for fire regs.
The next worry was that along the fence behind the caravan was an electric fence to stop predators gaining access to the garden containing ducks/ hens etc. The hook up station was on the other side of this fence meaning that you had to lean over to plug the electric cable in running the very real risk of a nasty shock. The other horror was that as there were insufficient hook ups for need, they employed triple splitters and ran cables across the field to units parked in the middle of the field. A van came down the field and dragged one of these cables ripping someone's tent in the process. Thank goodness is was not worse.
The site allows large groups meaning that any hope of a peaceful read or sit outside was impossible due to raucous shouting and behaviour from as early as 9:00 am that being the hour when the beer was broken out followed by all day drinking and consequent disorder. No sign of any control by the owners, in fact they were never visible on site at all. There was one lovely chap who worked there who was very helpful when we arrived. Sadly we never saw him again. In spite of the customary signs about dog faeces and control, many of these people ignored this and allowed their dogs to mess and run about off lead. Once again, no appearance or apparent care or control by the owners.
We went to the office at 10:00 am when we were preparing to leave, to ask for help with removing our electric cable from the station as it was on a splitter and we were unable to reach in without the risk of a shock. There was a queue of people waiting with one need of another and once again, no sign of anybody in authority. We struggled ourselves and managed to extricate the cable without injury. But we felt we should not have been in that position in the first place.
On the positive side. The views were beautiful over Chesil beach and the sea. Lovely dog walks down to the coast path. The toilet block newly renovated and a credit to the site.
I personally would not go back to this site obviously. But we imagine that out of the silly season and when the constant drone of the digger has ceased, this would be a pleasant site to visit. Be warned. If you want peace and comfort during high season. You will not be afforded it here!
