This site is in a beautiful location overlooking Chesil Beach and Portland. Hook-ups are tidy and clear and there is plenty of flat grass for the 5 units. The field is tucked away very near the coastal path and is within easy reach of shops and amenities. However, we were disappointed by a number of basic things which need to be put right as this new campsite develops.
When we arrived – using the directions on the website – we followed signs to go into the campsite through a horse schooling ring, but stopped short when it looked as though we would disrupt a horse and rider. When we asked at the farm we were told that access had been changed to a different road so turned round. We were very glad not to be towing a caravan as turning would have been difficult. However it was fine to move our VW through the gated fields. This might be a problem when it gets muddy.
When we booked we had not been told that the shower and toilet block was still under construction and in itself we were not concerned that the two new toilets didn’t have doors as there was another that we could use. An indoor washing up and clothes washing area was under construction. Wifi will be available. The showers worked well although changing space and lack of strong hooks made it a challenge to separate dry clothes from wet floor. There isn’t any sink big enough to shave in (the new hand basins weren’t even big enough to get two hands into at once) and we hope that when finished, there would be a surface to put things onto with a mirror to look into e. G. For contact lens insertion. My fiancé shaved outside in the washing up sink (after twice clearing builders’ stuff from the sink and ground underneath) which was fine as the weather was good…
We were happy to have access to the old loo and hot water heater rather than the new block still under development, but when it clearly hadn’t been cleaned for days, had a leak onto the revolting concrete floor, had a filthy hand towel and no mirror, nowhere to put a towel (the loo lid was dirty on top too) the experience was far from pleasant although at least there was plenty of loo roll. The final frustration was the complete lack of rubbish or recycling facilities: on the last day I asked where I could put our rubbish bag and after a few seconds’ thought, the farm owner said I could add it to the building skip in the yard which the seagulls were picking over. I was not happy with this and totally unimpressed that even this basic provision had not been made.
Currently the site is shared with horse owners who use the stables and fields although access will be changed, we were told. Both the farm owners and some horse owners had dogs that were allowed to roam the campsite. We own a dog and are used to clearing up after him: these dogs were not watched so no clearing up took place on the site, and one dog peed on the tent awning. Particularly unpleasant was avoiding dog mess on the gravel drive en route to the showers: it’s hard to scrutinise each stone walked on and avoid dog mess that hasn’t been cleared up.
Although there was only one other person on the site while we were there, the peace was ruined by a digger on the adjacent field in the farm going from 8 a. M. To 6 p. M. , Sunday through to Tuesday. Again, we wouldn’t have minded if we had either been warned or had been given perhaps an apology or gesture of goodwill but it was very noisy and disruptive.
We like simple sites if they are kept clean. However, we felt there had been a lack of consideration of these basic issues or even recognition that the site was not ready for visitors: we would happily have discussed the site’s shortcomings had the owners come and asked our views. Since the owners did not seek our feedback on anything, if they are reading this I hope that they can see that many of these issues can be sorted as it has the potential to be a site with lots to offer.
