We (my partner and kids, my two brothers and their families, 17 in all) went to Clennell hall the first weekend in April and decided to go back for the Easter bank holiday weekend. The first weekend was ok, nice and peaceful we were on the small field where the kids plat area is but it wasn't busy so we didn't mind. The first week we stood and talked to the duty wardens and found them friendly, we never got to see the site managers.

In contrast our second weekend was a nightmare, The site was very busy none of our party got a hot or even warm shower and there was no hot water to wash up. Being on the playimg field was a nightmare too, we had other peoples kids running past tents right through the middle tripping over guy ropes, one tent and one wind break ripped!

There was noise both nights we stayed until early hours and nothing done about it (even though several campers complained). Other campers couldn't find a pitch so asked for money back and were refused. Grass cutter out at 8:30 in morning next to tents, I heard one camper complaining but given a very surly 'we start work at 8:30 so there's nothing you can do about it'.

On our third day we went to visit Amble, on returning we found someone had been in our tents and the site manager marching over to show us that our rubbish had been set on fire. He insisted we must have started it but we had been off site at least two and a half hours before it started. My brothers tent was damaged by the fire and it wasn't fit to sleep in it that night, we all packed up to head off home.

As we hadn't caused the damage ourselves we asked for a refund for that night. The manager refused to even talk to us, then refused to give us his bosses name and number. In 17 years camping I have never heard so many complaints, and never heard so many ignored by the site On this second experience I agree with previous reviews about staff attitudes and the poor facilities. Myself or My brothers won't be visiting this site again.

Just got back from 2 nights on this site, I have to say what a perfect location. There are walks in almost every direction which would suit anybody from serious hikers or just for a nice leisurely stroll. There is a small stream just outside the site which if the weather had been warmer would have been perfect for the kids to paddle in, there are hills and fantastic scenery all around.
The site itself has a good play area for the kids which is now where the tents are pitched so you can keep an eye on them. There is a bar in clennell hall itself (nothing to do with site) which is reasonably priced and it has a restaurant which we never used so can't comment on.
The shower blocks aren't ultra modern but are clean and well looked after, the showers were ok but on the second morning weren't very warm, but that may have been down to the fact that when we got up there was a thick ground frost! after all it was the 2nd of April. There was also a lack of hot water on an evening in the toilets.  But overall a friendly well maintained site apart from the hot water.

Quiet, peaceful, perfect place for a bit of father son bonding, never pitched here before, but suited myself & my 8 year old to a T. Tent area was spacious plenty of space for kids to get together & play & also for those of us who think we can still compete with the younger ones.
Toilets & showers were clean, fairly average but did the job, no complaints there.
Kids area was well maintained & clean, staff were very friendly & helpful.
Pub within the grounds was nice, just what you want from a pub on a campsite, good beer & good food & good company, staff were very friendly & welcomed kids with open arms.
So in all a great place to get away from it all, would recommend it to anyone looking for a bit of space or as a base to explore the surrounding countryside.
Only thing I think it may benefit from is a small shop on site, because there is always something I forget to take!

Agree with previous comments - this site could be fabulous. We had a great time here but as the toilets and showers weren't too clean I was pleased we were only there for one night. Having said that the kids had a fantastic time, they loved the park and there was loads of space for them to play their ball games without getting in the way of anyone.
There were 3 showers in the ladies block but only one had hot water, I did mention this (and the dirty floor) to one of the staff and he went straight round to sort it out, with a mop in hand.

Having visited a few different campsites now, each one has something to offer which the next one doesn't and although this site is lacking in cleanliness it does have a lot going for it - a beautiful location, a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and lots of open space. If the shower block had a re-vamp then this site would definitely be a firm favourite.

Just returned from spending two days on this site, Although we nearly turned around and left straight away! The flies are attracted to the heat from the car and followed us in swarms, very off-putting. We were assured that they would go away and some of them did, but there was still an unusually large amount of flies there! The site is lovely and the views are amazing, facilities are standard and people friendly. However, the gates are a pain for those of us in tents, every time you need the loo there's two massive gates to open- especially in the middle of the night! The pub in the village is lovely, I wouldn't bother with the Bar in Clennell Hall, lacks any atmosphere. Heard the food's good though.
We will return, but maybe go midweek to avoid the kids! Lynetty x

What can I say? This place has the potential to be fabulous but isn't right now. Really stunning scenery there - absolutely gorgeous walks and hill climbs etc. However, showers, toilets etc in desperate need of a revite and a clean now and then! The weakest showers I've ever experienced! Fine if you are self contained in a van or tourer, but for us tenties, a bit on the basic side.

That said, the people running the place were really friendly and helpful. The Hall itself is nothing to do with the campsite and is friendly and a good place for a beer. The food at night wasn't bad - decent bar fodder at reasonable prices, but the lunchtime food we had when we called back the following week was atrocious. My main gripe was with some of the fellow campers really - letting their dogs foul the place without cleaning up became rather tiresome and just not respecting noise levels late at night.

Beware the ground here! All our pegs need replacing now as the soil is only a couple of inches deep before hitting rock! We did enjoy our stay here but remember it is mostly statics and large tourers parked up there so doesn't cater as well for tents etc. Lovely landscaping on site though. I'd give it 6/10 overall.

Wonderful location, two nights with my boys camping. They loved it and particularly liked that the site didn't "feel cramped".

Food and drink also available from a fabulous country pile adjacent the site.

We will surely go again.

Thanks John D

 July 2005
We spent two nights in the rain at this site situated in the Cheviots of Northumberland.

The sites location is in a sheltered spot at the foot of the hills in the grounds of Clennell House. There site is well stocked with trees which provide an level of screening between the different types of pitch (static, tourer and tent)

When we visited we had a number of friends also camping on the site and we took over the main tent site near the entrance of the site next to the excellent children’s play park.

Caution hard stony ground... I managed to bend over 20 tent pegs trying to peg out our tent!! And no it was not my technique! but the fact there was a vast amount of stone under the top lair of soil. It was the same for each of us who used this pitch.

However it rained constantly for two days and the pitch was well drained and did not turn into a quagmire or have standing puddles.

The washing facilities were dated but I was able to have a good hot shower both mornings we were there. However my wife's experience was different there was not a lot of hot water in the ladies area and the showers had little or no power.

The dish washing room was excellent with loads of piping hot water but only two sinks so we had to queue a couple of times to use them.

However my main issue with the site was the lack of friendly customer care from the staff. We found some of staff rude and unwelcoming. We were a large party (16 adults and 12 under ten year olds) and we found that the site was not able to cope with the difficulties in terms of arrival and set up. In addition simple courtesy such as please and thank you's were missing and replaced with grumpy unhelpful demands.

So the plus's

Excellent Children’s Play Area (was Superb)
Excellent location
Good Bar
Good dish washing facilities
Well drained

The negatives
Hard / Stony Ground
Dated washing / WC
Unhelpful / unfriendly staff

Would we go back ..... no

We have visited this campsite twice in the last few months, as it is a lovely place to relax. We have a little 3 yr old and you can pitch your tent near to the excellent kids play area, so you don't need to constantly keep an eye on them. The mangement are all lovely and they make you feel welcome no matter time you arrive. Even when I stupidly left my hand bag in the pub grounds and didn't realise until I arrived home, they were so helpful and made sure they kept it safe until I returned to pick it up. We will definitely make this site one of our regulars.

Small, friendly, and well kept campsite, toilets and showers very clean, with nice childrens play area, no on-site shop - as yet, (but turning the manor house into a resturant etc). Pub approx 1 mile down road - good food sold there. Great if you like walking, beautiful scenery, lots of sheep. Downside - pestered a lot by midgies!!! at night. First camping trip and was bitten to bits, but has not put the family off camping as apart from this we all enjoyed the experience - would go back :-)
