July 2005 This is quite a small site with beautiful surroundings, however the facilities are not of the highest standard, but plenty of hot water. We have been told that the hall itself is being refurbished and is due to open on the 15th July 2005. This includes letting rooms, a bar, restaurant and shop but in order to get the best feedback from customers, I suggest the changing facilities are upgraded as well. Let`s face it, it`s very nice having a bar etc but everybody likes clean and comfortable washing facitlies in order to revisit time and time again. We will make a return visit to this site, but after the showers etc have been refurbished!! 1 night cost 15.00 for a med/large tent and an additional 3.00 for hook-up.

May 2005 This site is amazing the owners are very friendly and helpful. The regulars were friendly and told of us of some of the walks. We could pitch where we wanted, which was great as we faced the kids play area so that we could keep an eye on our 3 kids. we had the most amazing view of the hills. the toilets where clean and plenty of hot water. It seems to be quite a sun trap. we were there 2 hours and got sunburned (not planned).
On the last day, there was a lot of rain and we got stuck, campsite owners came to our rescue as did a few campers who tried to push us out then pulled us out in their landrover.
It is secluded and about 10 miles away from the nearest shop. This is what we wanted, so that kids couldnt keep asking for sweets. Though we were told that the manor house on the site is going to have a restuarant and shop in the near future. Will be going back to this site.

June 2004 Great site. Really friendly helpful couple. I think our kids were the nosiest guests, other than them it was very quiet. A mix of a few statics, caravans and tents. It really is at the end of the road though! I'm sure that there is some lovely walking, but given that the heavens kept pouring every time we got more than ½ a mile from the campsite, I don't know! There is a small playpark, that the kids enjoyed, HOT showers (yum). There is a laundry available (£2 a token - gets you an hours drying) which was a godsend given we got soaked. Watch out for the pheasants - one nicked an untended slice of breakfast bread and ate it all up! I can't emphasise enough how friendly the couple who run the site are. We will definatley be going back. The only word of warning is that the nearest shops are six miles of country backroad away in Rothbury, so remember to pick up anything before you arrive.

May 2004 Quick summary: in the middle of nowhere; friendly and helpful site managers; good ground; basic, rather dated facilities (nowhere to sit inside if it rains); pretty views; 15 minute walk to nearest pub; lots of helpful long-standing site regulars; reasonable children's play area.
The campsite is in the grounds of Clennell Hall which is closed at the moment, in need of a developer. It used to be open for drinks and meals, but was closed by the foot and mouth outbreak, apparently.
There was some digging work going on while we were there, and the new managers told us about Ideal Caravan's grand plans to develop the site. Plenty of local walking - Clennell Street is an old Roman road which is 5 minutes away, taking you up into the hills for some lovely views. There is also a nice 45 minute walk to Harbottle following a path signposted to the left just after Low Alwinton church. Rothbury is only 10 minutes drive.
The Rose and Thistle pub in Alwinton is small but friendly, only a 15 minute walk over the river and a couple of fields. Remember your torch!
We got fantastic weather, and really enjoyed every minute - the setting is so peaceful.

April 2004 Location,location,location......this campsite is set in some of the most spectacular, gorgeous countryside in the Northumberland national park. The site itself (which has recently been taken on by new owners is lovely (flat, good drainage) although very basic (amenities only). This is the perfect site for a short break returning to nature and I intend to return A.S.A.P. I would however advise against booking up for a lengthy holiday unless isolation appeals to you, as there is little to do other than just 'be' there. The kids play area is also a bit the worse for wear but in the new owners (who were both very friendly and helpful) defence there was clear evidence of extensive improvements being made. This maybe explains partly my other small niggle...the price. For such a basic site the fees are quite steep (£12 for 1 adult & 2 kids p.n low season) although there are no other costs (showers etc). We caught stunning weather and had a brilliant weekend so overall it was worth it but had the heavens been against us I may have felt a bit more stung by the costs, which are clearly led by the location, something which would be harder to enjoy if the Northumbrian countryside acted as it should do in April. Overall a good 7/10 with the expectancy that by peak season with improvements this will have gone up to 8 or 9......catch the weather and the fees will seem a bargain.
