A very well run site by a very kind and pleasant man. We chose this site because of the single static that my parents could use and then the rest of us could go in our caravan and awning. We also liked the idea of being near the military airbase which was fascinating when aircraft took off and landed. I’ve got some great photos of planes just over our van. The toilets and showers are very clean indeed, but sadly the wooden doors and lack of heating mean they are cold. We were took a bit by surprise at the 50 pence charge for the showers – we were daft enough to pay on one day, but realised for the rest of the week we could use the static! The site is in a perfect location for visiting Ely and Newmarket and we had a great day at the races, something we’ve never done before. We’d come back again if we had a reason to visit the area.

I have to say that we don't like this site very much.

First the good points:

It's level and well drained, access os ok and it has a security barrier. It would be useful to be given the code for this when booking.

The facilities seem ok but I don't think there is a washing up area and as it accepts tents I would have thought that this would be a good idea.

It's not far from Mildenhall.

It now costs £13 with ehu for a caravan.

Sky tv signal is very easy to find.

The bad points (in our opinion):

It's right next to the perimeter of the Air Force base and when the planes take off they go over the site very loudly and at low level. They seem to choose their days, on Thursday they were flying until gone 11pm. If you want to view the planes from the viewing platform, you need to have a disclaimer, not sure where from.

It's very hard to find. Take the A1101 into Mildenhall, then it's a left turn into Queensway where you see the Mildenhall sign (which looks like a pub sign). Don't stay on the A1101 and it's not the A1102 either, it's the road in between. When you see the Queen's Head pub on the right, then you are on the right road.
Management response: In response to this review I would like to clarify the following points.

1) We do have a dedicated washing up cubicle with a full kitchen sink with draining board and hot and cold water. Available for washing up or indeed washing clothes.

2) The US Air Force Base is our unique selling point. It's why 95% of our visitors come and stay here. We advertise this point heavily, not only on our website but also on sites such as this one. Please look at our listing on this site to see we do not try and hide this fact. I assume this customer came to us through ukcampsite.co.uk, so I am unclear as to how they wouldn't know we are next to an air base?

3) Disclaimers for the viewing platform are from the site office.

4) The directions given in the above review for reaching the site are inaccurate. Please see our featured listing on this site, visit our own website or refer to Google Maps or even a Sat Nav for directions. Our exact location is shown on all of these resources

Well kept site apart from the toilets needing a bit updating. No heating and the doors for the toilets and showers do not have a full door so if it was cold and windy you would feel it.

Felt that 50p for a shower was a bit on the deer side especially since you only get a short time so you have to have a quick wash.

Ideal if you want to do a bit of plane spotting or go to the local stockcar racing track which make more noise than the planes.

Not very well signposted from the main road.

We stayed for 2 nights, the first of 2 different stays on our first touring caravan holiday.

We had a few issues finding the site (Don't use Sat Nav! the postcode is the same for whole length of the road apparently), so ended up entering the site from the wrong direction which was a tight turn.

The site owners were great, very friendly, and helped us position our caravan, and even tried to help me sort out my battery charging problems (I later realised we didn't have a charger unit installed!).

The site is very nice and quiet, on a tidy, level field, and basically at the end of the Mildenhall USAF runway, so great views of the planes, although actually only 2 went off during our stay. Our pitch was a decent size, and had a 10amp EHU, and water connections.

Location was good, useful little general stores, and fish & Chip shop a short walk away.Mildenhall itself is quite small, but had a Sainsburys, free parking and some good interesting walks, and more takeaway shops than I've ever seen in one place, obviously due to keeping the people of the US base fed!. Bury St Edmonds was a fairly short drive away, as is Duxford, both worth a visit.

The showers were apparently very good, and clean (50p a time) although it could do with more toilets for the size of the site, luckily we didn't need to use either, as we were using our vans toilet and shower. Chemical disposal was in a secluded area at the back of the block, and there were limited recycling options for rubbish (Restrictions imposed by council are to blame, not owners).

There was some sort of motorcycle sidecar club meeting going on which worried us when we first arrived, but actually they were very quiet, and friendly, and we actually found it very interesting. My son loved looking at the planes on the base, but other than this, there is nothing for children to do, or any play area, but there was space for swingball etc.

Overall, for the price I was very pleased, especially being able to get a pitch at such short notice, and would certainly visit again, but perhaps not the sort of site for a family with young children to visit for a long stay.

We have just spent a relaxing weekend at this site. Difficult to find it, if approaching from Barton Mills, go towards Mildenhall and when you cross the river by the mill at the start of the town look for a left turn, you need to be at the left hand side of the airfield. Go down a long stretch of road and turn right at a T-Junction.

Despite being by the airfield, we only heard two planes go over, unfortunately it was around 7.00am so we missed seeing them as we were still in bed.

However, you do see planes moving around on the runways.

The campsite is flat and the warden friendly and welcoming, and at £19 including hook up for two nights, is one of the cheapest sites we have used.

Mildenhall is a quaint little town with some decent shops, and Bury St.Edmonds is just 12 miles away and cheap to park on long stay. The town and gardens are worth a visit. Also some decent pubs for a good pub lunch.

The facilities on the site are a bit restricted but we never had to wait to use toilets, showers or wash room etc. The gents toilet did have a leaky urinal which was a bit smelly but I am sure this will be sorted at some point.

Thetford forest is just a short drive away and next time we go we shall do a walk through the forest.

One of the best things about this site was the fact that the few children that were on site were well behaved and we didn't have to suffer the usual disruption of balls hitting our tent every five minutes.

We will certainly return next year, this site goes to the top of my list of sites to return to.

Just got back from a 1 night stay at The Willows campsite. On arrival we were met by the owners who directed me to the pitches which were all of a large size. The site was very well maintained, the toilets were always clean. No children's play facilities and the showers seemed to have no hot water, but that could have been me using it incorrectly.
Overall a good site for £11 a night for 4 people and a 2 dogs and electric. The only other problem were the planes which take off less than 500 metres away, at 5:45am. But that wont put us off returning next year.

A first for us - a site literally within a stone's throw of the end of the runway of a USAF base! We had grave misgivings, but it was a lovely quiet site, and there was more noise from a nearby banger race track Saturday night) than from the base ( only one take off at about 10 am Sunday). The only let down was the weather, which was very wet. Despite that, the ground drained well. Toilets and showers were basic but clean and the price was very reasonable. We would definitely consider a return, especially if we have to visit our sick dog next week. She is a patient at the Animal Health Trust at Kentford, just down the road.

Travelled from the North East just for the w/end to meet up with EX service personnel.Had such a magic w/end that we decided to stay the week. A lovely flat site with all the amenities that you require.

Being EX RN it was a pleasure to watch all those big birds take off and land, much better than being in a black SUB going down. The site owners are a lovely couple and will bend over backwards to help you what ever the problem may be. In fact all of us from 2005 are doing it again in June 2006.

Nice, friendly owners - managed to fit us in at the last minute and they were very helpful! The toilet/shower facilities were disappointingly inadequate for the number of campers though. There were no electric points for hairdryers and only 2 wash-rooms (with cold water only!) and 2 showers to service 2 fields, so queueing for 15-30 mins was quite normal. Having said that, we stayed here August bank holiday, so I presume that this site would not always be as busy as this.

The price charged was very good in comparison to other campsites.

If you do decide to book in here, there is a great pub (Dudes Ferry) on the river, a short car ride away, that serves big portions at great prices. Would definitely recommend!
