This was the 2nd time I have visited this site, the 1st being a day visit to the Borrowdale Valley, where a friend commented and showed me Chapel House, what I saw remained with me, and with the previous reviews on ukcampsite, I was a tad reserved about actually staying on the site, when I was asked to go camping.
Yes its basic, there are no lights in the loos, 50p for a personal scrub up (shower), NO hot water or covered area for washing up etc, the grass IS left to its own devices, and £6:00 per night for a stopover.
But…. Whilst staying at Chapel House we visited other sites in the local vicinity, yes they were slightly cheaper at £5, some had free showers, most had no other hot water on site, some had electricity others not.
On returning back to Chapel House after a days trekking, the site was filling up “fast” but with plenty of room (tons of room) and it definitively had a very endearing quality, felt like home, it really felt right. I would certainly stay here again over the others in the area, and at the end of the day its personal taste and what works for you. Judging by the amount staying on the site it is a very popular and well-liked place.
Chapel House has won me over, fair and square, looking forward to returning, very soon.

We stayed nearly two weeks here, firstly with a group of friends, and then on our own as a family. The site is in a beautiful location, in a generally very well drained site (we had very heavy rainfall one night that flooded out one tent - but this was a time when campsites in Keswick were abandoned!). Pegs need a good bash to get in. Site is quiet, with people going to bed early and though it filled up a bit at the weekends it was pretty empty the rest of the week. Many people are backpackers on the Coast to Coast walk so they arrive tired and go to bed early!
A bit pricey for such a basic site - the lack of hot water except for showers was a downer though the 50p showers were hot. Not much room to change in them though. Loo paper often ran out during the day (back to the old days of having paper in your pocket!) and no lighting! Site seemed to need some more loving care - and the collection of fees at 7am in the morning seemed to wake up pretty much every camper on the site! Not the best thing when you've been awake in the night due to the sound of rain, sheep and barking dogs! (To be honest, I just wanted to lie in!)
This site is near the wettest spot in England, so don't expect the best of weather - but a great site to get out into the wild quickly - without having to use your car. We enjoyed our time, with other friendly campers, plenty of room, and it's safe for the kids to run around in with cars parked away from the tents.
Finally, for groceries it's either Rosthwaite for a small grocery store, or it's Keswick. In summary, old fashioned and enjoyable, just would love it to be improved to reflect the prices charged.

Stayed here for 2 nights at the beginning of August after trying numerous other sites that we were unable to get on. Very pleasantly surprised, yes it is very basic as others have pointed out but the location is breathtaking and the owners very helpful and friendly. We stayed in the overflow field so you have to cross the road to use the toilets / showers, but there is a tap by the field entrance. We were charged £18 / night for 2 adults + 2 kids but we do have a large tent and a boat and so thought it was reasonably priced for the Lakes. (I think they charge by the person rather than unit etc).
Nice pub 15 mins walk away that do reasonable food at a reasonable price, however you may have to wait a while at busy times.
All in all I think this is one of those good sites to have in reserve if unable to get on one of the better sites. However if you are happy with basic facilities in a quiet and beautiful setting then this site will appeal to you.

This was my first camping trip for many years. Along with a friend, and My Lichfield Apache 3, we arrived quite by accident, as the site that my friend visited many years ago, and wanted to visit again, no longer existed.
Using my laptop, and mobile broadband, I did a campsite search (using this website of course) and ended up at Chapel House Farm Camping site.
There are 2 separate fields, one where vehicles have to be left in the car park, and everything carried to the pitch, and the one we ended up in, which allowed you to drive onto the field.
The field itself was fine, the grass had just been cut, so it was traipsed everywhere, but a minor point, the field was fairly level, well drained, but stony 3 - 4 inches down (tough pegs recommended)
Reviewing the facilities is extremely easy, there weren`t any, No Toilets, no Water, no showers, no hook up, nothing.
The location on the other hand, was abundantly engaging, from the huge hills surrounding the site, to the babbling river nearby, there was plenty to do for someone who`s main interest is photography, like me, or walkers/ramblers (the main constituent of campers present at the time)
Whilst not especially child friendly, the children that were there seemed to be having fun, and there was plenty of space for them to do so.
The site is dog friendly, maybe a little too friendly, as I managed to tread on a t**d whilst looking for somewhere to pee, I was not happy at that point, but the worst was yet to come.
The 'family' that moved in next door, proceeded to pretty much ruin my evening. They were a big group of about 10, with a range Rover Vogue (A classy motor does not guarantee classy owners), who felt it was their duty to open the tailgate and loudly treat us all to their selection of music, 30 second bursts at a time, then began drinking heavily. I fell asleep through the worst of it, but according to my friend, at about 4.45am, one of the males decided to beat his wife/girlfrind up, who left by taxi with the kids. I awoke in the morning just as 2 men were carted away in a police van, leaving the tattered remains of their tents/barbeque etc in a pile in the middle of the field.
This was probably an isolated incident, but one that makes me feel I will probably not return until there is at least access to drinking water, and a 'no large group' policy.
The pitch fee was £6.00 pppn, which, with the benefit of more experience, was as steep as the hills surrounding the site, especially considering the lack of facilities.

Stayed here for one night whilst exploring Borrowdale. Gorgeous location with peaks looming majestically on all sides. Anyway, enough bad prose and down to the basics. Not a massive site - just a field really - and don't think is suitable for campervans as vehicles need to be left in the car park unless you want to pay the above average fees levied. We were a bit surprised to have to pay £15 for two people just because we brought the van onto the field. Tent only would have worked out at about £12. Toilets basic but okay, but hot water could be free taking into account the high price.
Nearby attractions seem to consist of the pub in the nearby village which is well geared up to extract cash from tourists. Pleasant enough, though had the air of a butlins holiday camp bar.
In a nutshell, an average site in an above average location for enjoying lake district walking and views - but not much else.

We chose this site on the basis of the other reviews that said it was quiet, peaceful and beautifully situated and they were not wrong. However, when we arrived we found that it was to be one of the busiest days of the year as it was the weekend of the annual Rosthwaite fell run!
That said, even though the campsite filled up considerably, campers still left plenty of space between each other, the atmosphere was bustling and jovial, and it was more or less dead quiet by 11pm, aside from the animals! This is a working farm and there are noises from around 4.30am with sheep, dogs, cows, birds etc. We don’t mind this but some might.
As other reviews have highlighted, this is not a site for campers who like their luxuries. The toilets are very basis, no lights at night and no hot water in the sinks. The only hot water is from the showers which run on a 50p system for which you get about 5mins which is plenty of time. The field is undulating and the grass is long; you also can not park your car beside your tent which suited us as we were on foot but might put a lot of people off.
Rosthwaite is about a 15minute walk away and there is a pub there which was very busy when we there because of the fell run but I would imagine that it is usually quieter. We would have eaten in there as the food sounded nice and reasonably priced but it was just too mad that night! Stonethwaite is about a 25minute walk away but the pub there is of the “Gastro” variety which is fine if you don’t mind spending £15 on fancy food but not our sort of thing at all.Aside from the two pubs and the post office in Rosthwaite there are few other local ammenities.
There are two buses which stop more or less outside the site, one runs every 30mins into Keswick during the high season and the other runs about every 2 hours on a circular route up the Ladore side of Derwent Water, over the Honister pass and back to Keswick via the other side of Derwent Water. The site is excellently situated for gaining access to the fells around the Borrowdale valley, as demonstrated by the fell runners.
If I had to find a criticism of this site, aside from the limited facilities if that is not your thing, it would be the price. At £6 per person per night it is a little bit pricey for a farm site with no hot running water or light in the loo.

Well I visted on a whim when my music festval got cancelled and boy was I glad I did! I loved it from day 1! I was only supposed to stop for 1 day but ended up stopping for an entire week! It is truly a campsite for people who just want to get back to nature and the basics!
The grass was a bit long though for the time of year! and providiing you like animals you wont be bothered with the 100 - 200 sheep in surronding fields which make noise! but hey I liked them a few seemed friendly enough to let me stroke them!
There were plenty water points, sinks and toilets so there was no waiting in lines which was good. Unfortunatley there are no lights in the toilet which makes it difficult to go in teh dark unless you struggle on with your torch and other things!. Shower blocks were great! very hot which is just what you need to freshen up in the morning or clean up after a long day speedboating on derwent water!.
There are are no local amenieties however there is a bus which runs every 30 mins into keswick which then gives you ample things to do! we did find a lovely little pub in rosthwaithe(SP) and the surrounding area were superb watching the sunset and sunrise over the borrowdale hills was just amazing a truly unforgettable experience! cant wait to go back!

This is truly a site for people who love camping in its purest form (but still like an on-site toilet). The grass is not mowed and you cannot park your car next to the tent. It is a working farm so the chances of you being woken up at 6am by 100's of sheep waiting to be clipped is very high.
As stated in previous reviews, the facilities are basic and not for the types who insist on bringing hair-dryers and electric shavers! You will need a torch or lantern to navigate when the sun goes down.
Locally, there are two pubs within easy walking distance and they both serve food. You are in the Lake district though so expect to pay a few quid more than elsewhere.
The site is easily accessible by public transport from Keswick. The buses continue up the valley, over Honister pass, to the Honister Slate mine which has just recently opened up an Alpine style 'via ferrata'.
The Borrowdale valley is a place to get out there on foot and enjoy the majesty of nature. Unfortunatly this is overlooked by car bound sightseers and those with more cash than consience who have driven the prices up and created a sense of exclusivity that distracts from the reason to be there in the first place.

My visit to Chapel House Farm coincided with some severe weather conditions. The temperature plummeted to -6C. However, despite this I had an amazing time at a wonderful campsite. The facilities are basic, so if you are looking for somewhere with a chip shop and bar on-site you should go elsewhere. The camping field has some very good pitches and the views from there are exceptional. The site is close to a decent pub with good food - albeit one that seems to close at 9pm despite the remote location. This is an excellent site in a truly stunning part of the Lake District. Borrowdale is a magnificent vally surrounded by some of the highest and most majestic hills in England. I would be more than happy to recommend this site.

This is the second time I have visited this campsite and I believe it to be the most peaceful and beautiful place I have stayed whilst visiting the lakes. I usually stay elsewhere until my partner introduced me to it. I Am returning again in 2 weeks with a group as we enjoy it so much. Beautiful location, however the toilet and shower area could use some lighting and a good cleaning. Other than that I would recommend this campsite to young couples and hikers alike.
