We have stopped over at this site on a number of occasions over the years. During that time little has changed and as other reviews note the toilets have always begged for some tender loving care, but are serviced with ample hot water, at least the ones between pitches 114 and 138 do. The staff are friendly and helpful and invariably speak English. The hard standing pitches are fine with shared hook-ups and hedges kept trimmed as is the surrounding grass. It must be noted that this a Municipal site which is maybe why it is so well signposted from both the east and the west.
It is only a short drive into Chalons which has some good restaurants. Try Comptore de la Licorne in Place de Marchal Foch, sitting outside you can also watch the world pass by.
If it is champagne you want visit the village of Cramant and try the produce of Champagne Guiborat Fils at 99 rue de la Garenne. You will note what champagne should taste like.

We are tent campers and have used the municipal site at Chalons en Champagne numerous times over the past 10+ years, mainly because of its convenient distance from Calais. At first we sang the praises of the site but now sadly find ourselves needing to be critical. The Reception staff are, on the whole, polite and the pitches are still good but the cheerful little café is now a shadow of its former self. We stayed there in June and were subjected to barely lukewarm water for a shower in one of the two shower blocks, where, incidentally, cobwebs could be seen. I had to dress again and walk to the other block where I did eventually get hot water but noticed cracked and missing tiles. We timed the hot water in the former (our nearest) block for washing up and found that it lasted for 9 seconds before turning cold! The positioning of the electric hookups also requires upgrading, as now antiquated plinths serve numerous pitches.
Unfortunately, as the standard has decreased, the price has increased and we paid 23.60 Euros per night on what still claims to be a 4 star site. We often use municipal campsites rated as only 2 star on our travels and find them to be value for money and of a good standard of cleanliness. Next year we will be checking our camping books for an alternative site.

We used this site twice on our trip, both going & returning. It is in a good location for an overnight stop. On our first arrival, we noticed the police cars just leaving the site. Fellow Brits told us several caravan & cars had been broken into during the previous night whilst their owners were sleeping & mobiles, i-pads & laptops stolen. Reading this web site, I note this happened before in June 2012. We made sure everything was locked & safe before going to bed. The first impression on arrival is that of a 1950's holiday camp due to the dated architecture. It is surrounded by housing estates & flats. The pitches, however, are generous in size, well laid out, private and level. Access is easy via the wide roads all in good condition. There are plenty of pitches to be had. We enjoyed full service facilities & Wi-Fi at no extra cost. Some caravanners complained the showers were only luke warm (we use our own on board facilities). The staff were very friendly & helpful. The town is a good 40 minutes walk & closed on Mondays. The park is well worth a visit. Restaurants are plenty & resonably priced.

The site is convenient for a break when heading South. At the moment there are 3 motorhomes and 2 caravans on site. More last night but only doing stopovers.
It's nicely laid out with hedges around each pitch. Water, drainage, and 10 amp electric on each. The toilets are adequate proper WC with toilet roll, all very clean though a little tired. Showers again very clean but tired, I had plenty of hot water but other half found no hot at all so used the one in our motor. Only one block open at the moment so can't comment on the other block. Reception good, friendly and helpful, maybe glad to have someone to talk to, her English very good too.
There is a huge Carefoure half a mile away, town centre is about a 25 minute walk and not much there that we found, but we didn't look too hard.
240 miles from Calais avoiding toll roads (courtesy of TomTom) and is very close to A26 and A4 if you prefer.
Finally free WIFI on site which I am using to do this.

Update from my review of October 2011.
The owners have added more Mobile Homes for rent and have refurbished and re-opened the restaurant/bar, however the food is fairly basic. Site wide WiFi is also now available but I cannot comment on its effectiveness as we did not use it.
The sanitation blocks are still the same and looking even more tired than last year and are in dire need of an update. As we use the facilities in our caravan most of the time this is not an issue to us but may be to others.
We will continue to use this site because it provides an excellent stop over on the way North/South. It is a good quality campsite and beneftis from hardstanding pitches which can cope with most weather conditions which after a soggy stop over in Beaune (see report on Camping Les Bouleaux) was very welcome.

We stayed here for one night on our way through the region. It was ok, it just felt a little unloved. Everywhere was clean, it just felt like it was lacking a bit of care & attention.
We were given a hard standing for our camper which was hedged on 2 sides, but in the heat the lack of tree cover & gravel hard-standing made us feel a bit baked!
There was a mini golf area, tennis court & play area which were all getting used. There was also a lake to walk around, but thought more could've been made of this as it actually could've been a really nice area with a bit of work.
The on site snack bar opened at 5. 30 & had beer, wine, ice creams & full meals. They also offered a takeaway service.
We ordered 2 half roast chicken & chips at €9. 50 each (to eat in) & the portions were huge! In hindsight, we could've got 1 order of the chicken & chips and had it as a takeaway between 2 adults as there was just so much food!
I believe our one night for 2 adults with our camper & hook-up, was €23 & was the cheapest place we stayed. It was ok for one night, but don't think we would've stayed longer.

We used this site for overnighting both going down to Jura and returning home. It was ok, just ok. But a bit pricey for just an ok site maybe? However it was convenient and in the right place for an overnighter for us.
Toilet block is tired and in need of renovating but it seemed clean enough.
We didn't use the snack bar so cant comment on that but there is free wifi which is a plus. There is massive Carrefour just around the corner from the site and was perfect for our wine shop on the way home. (turn left out of the site and then next main right and you will see it on the left. )
It is mostly overnighters that use this site and does seem to get quite full as the evening progresses.
The croissants etc were disappointing- rather supermarket fare and not flaky and messy like they should be so I wouldn't bother. Just buy supermarket ones yourselves for half the price!
Thats all we can say about this site really.

We selected this site as a stopover as it was just over 3 hours from Calais and also allowed us a cycletrip along the Canal Lateral a la Marne to Vitry Le Francois. The canal follows the River Marne and it is an extremely attractive cycle. The canal is a short walk from the site and about half an hour to the town which has a beautiful parkland setting. We had a generous pitch with water and drainage. The reception was not particularly friendly. The toilet and shower facilities are dated but they were clean and there are not many of them but this proved not to be a problem. (Though there are two blocks)There is a dedicated motorhome service point. It also accepts camping cheques all year round. At 15 euros, £12, which you can not argue with. Would I go back, yes and the trip to Epernay in the opposite direction along the canal awaits.

Good sized site primarily used for stop off. Booking highly recommended as was full when we were there. Arrived late so didn't go out so can't comment on the town. Easy to find and well sign posted.
Reception was a bit lukewarm with much eye-rolling but bar staff lovely. As mentioned, facilities dated and needing some attention but ok for one night. Bread, croissants etc available to order for brekkie.
Food in bar truly poor, even the frites, so would avoid. However, the beer is cold and a decent price so ok to relax for an hour or so if you've had a long drive.
For a one night stop off I would go again, but don't think I'd want to stay longer than that.

Like the review I have just read, this is a a convenient stop on the way - no more no less.
The facilities are in need of renovation, and for this reason I feel that the site is overpriced. Everything is an add-on price. When we were there the pitch was just over 5 euros, then just over 5 euros again per person, then electricity then some sort of tax which left the final bill for 5 of us at 40 euros.
Don't be fooled by the 4* rating, we had moved from a 4* site near Grenoble. This would place the municipal in Chalons at no more than 2*.
But , it is a convenient overnight stop and with our own facilities it was OK.
The one positive is that booking is easy via email, and no payment required until arrival at the site.
