I'll come clean up front and admit it was a filthy rainy day when we pitched up here so we weren't exactly seeing it at its best.
We picked this as being an excellent example of a municipal site, with a lovely welcoming entrance and a snack bar and bar (only open in the evenings outside July and August, apparently). As we were coming to the end of 15 nights camping, we (I - chief cook) was looking forward to taking advantage of the snack bar.
The television room came in very handy to wait until the rain eased off to only a steady downpour to put the tent up. Still it was fun watching the Dutch team win their game with the large Dutch contingent present on site.
Evening drew on and it became apparent that the bar/snack bar had no intention of opening. Bring out the pasta - again! Striking up a conversation with Attila the Hun also somewhat killed the ambience for us.
The games room consisted of an empty room with a couple of chairs in it.
I then went to view the facilities. Rather than the two blocks mentioned in the Alan Rogers book, only had the showers padlocked closed and the toilets had the flushing mechanism blocked in some way. Yes, I did lift the lid and poke around to see if it was something minor. Unfortunately both I and another lady only became aware of this shortcoming after the event.
When I checked out the other block that was marked as Gents showers, gents toilets, ladies showers, ladies toilets, I was a bit surprised to discover there were only two cubicles in the ladies toilets for the whole campsite - but at least they flushed. It wasn't until the next morning that I discovered that there were more unisex toilets in the block where the baby washing facilities were based.
Major plus? Lots of hot water in the shower and as long to shower as you wanted.
Would we go back? Probably not.

We stopped off at the municipal site at Chalon-en-Champagne on our way home to Dunkerque. We phoned ahead on arrival day and reserved a pitch. We arrived at reception at around 4.00pm after a pleasant day’s driving through the vineyards of Burgundy using N and D roads.
The site is situated at the southern end of the town and easily accessible from the A6 and A4 autoroutes and N77 which we were using. The site is well signposted from the outskirts of the town and set in a pleasant park in a residential area. It is a popular night halt and there were already 3 British caravan queuing to book in when we arrived. The reception staff were polite and friendly and spoke excellent English. We booked 2 nights but planned to leave on the afternoon before the 2nd night for a night time drive to Dunkerque.
We were given a reasonably large pitch on the newer section of the campsite and this pitch backed onto the small lake. The pitch was half grass and half hard standing with little shade. Access was good on tarred site roads and the pitches were separated from neighbouring ones by low hedges.
The site had games and TV rooms, a small restaurant / take-away and a kiosk selling sweets, postcards, local produce, etc. Bread could be ordered from this kiosk the night before by writing on a noticeboard! The site offers free wi-fi internet, code required from reception, which worked on our pitch, outside the ‘van only. There were several toilet blocks, with loo paper, which were clean and well cared-for.
After spending a pleasant morning resting the next day we had hoped to do a little sight seeing in the town centre in the afternoon but ended up spending most of the day shopping at several supermarkets to find enough bottles of cider for our son who had asked to bring this back for his wedding in mid-September. We got most of this from the Carrefour hypermarket at the Centre Commercial about 15 minutes drive from the campsite but they did not have quite enough so we had to go on a supermarket tour courtesy of Tom Tom! The Carrefour near to the campsite was very large and set in a pleasant shopping precinct with a number of other large stores adjacent.
We finally left the site at about 8.00pm on second evening. The route was initially a little difficult as the town’s agricultural fete had closed part of our route. We had planned to drive to Dunkerque via N and D roads but gave-in and used the autoroutes. Tolls cost about 25€ for our journey to Dunkerque and we arrived there at c1.00am. We overnighted for free in the car park near the Norfolk Line ticket office before catching the 8.00am ferry to Dover.
Camping Municipal Chalon-en-Champagne cost 22.10€ per night (2 adults, car, ‘van and EHU) which I thought was a bit steep for a municipal but it was a good night halt and one which I would recommend.

Great campsite, stayed one night without booking, no probs, friendly staff, eccentric snack bar owner which made it all the more interesting. Very easy to find thanks to previous review directions. Showers OK, at least you didn't have to keep pressing the button! Good grass pitches, the only place we could get our pegs in while we were travelling. Definitely stay again and recommend.

There is already a very comprehensive review of this lovely site by David Klyne all of which we agree with. Its a lovely site in a very convenient location.
As first timers to this area and having come over on the ferry in the middle of the night we arrived quite early and were happy that they seemed to take arrivals before 2pm. A good point to note if you've had a long journey. We travelled late June so it was getting into the busy season but as many people only overnight here there was a lot of traffic coming and going.
If you are staying more than one night, the town of Chalons en Champagne itself is just about a 5 minutes drive- very easily accessible from the site and even on market day we had no problem parking in the centre of town. Not only was there an outdoor market but the covered market hall was a cornucopia of everything that's good about France. Wonderful charcuterie ,fish, more local produce including Cider but sadly no Champagne. Even if you weren't buying it, was a great place to see the locals and regulars chatting and lingering over the fine foods on offer.
Eating Al Fresco was not a problem. The main square has several restaurants to suit most pockets. There was at least one fine dining option at Le Renard- a chic boutique hotel- a couple of brasseries and even a pub/bar which served sandwiches and croque monsieur. All of them were busy with local business people.
Just outside the town and nearer to the campsite is the most hyper of all hypermarkets we'd ever seen. This Carrefour was so large that some of the assistants got round on roller skates. Again this had a fab array of products including a fish counter that would not be out of place in Harvey Nichols.
The only disappointment of the 2 day stay was not being able to work out when the local Champagne houses were actually open- all the leaflets were very confusing - maybe that's just us !
We loved the area and the site and will definitely go back again.

Great Campsite, ideally situated at roughly 3 and a half hours from Calais for a stop over while heading South. Pitches are clean, level, and well drained, and facilities include a cafe, shop, as well as clean, well maintained showers and bathrooms. The Bathrooms are a little dated, but that shouldn't put anyone off. Most people stay here for just one night, and so it can be a little busy in the mornings, but we stayed for three nights and found plenty to do in the town, which was a 15 minute cycle away. There is also a large retail park nearby (within walking distance) which boasts a huge Carrefour, C&A, Decathlon etc.
Staff were all helpful and welcoming. Would recommend it highly. Great value for money.

To find site:- Approach Chalons, from north or south on the N44, watch out for exit signed for St Memmie and follow camping signs. Don't worry that you appear to be going through a built up housing area with traffic calming! The site is well signed from the A44.
This is an excellent municipal campsite with around 150 pitches. It is situated in an urban setting next to a park area complete with tennis courts and crazy golf. There is also a small lake which forms one boundary of the campsite. The whole park and camping is surrounded by housing with clever use being made of the space. The pitches are either on gravel hardstandings divided by hedges or grass which are more open and all are of a generous size. Some pitches have water and waste adjacent. Electricity is accessible to the non tent pitches and is rated as 10 amp. There are two toilet/shower blocks which, whilst kept clean and serviceable with seated toilets and paper provided. However they are now a little dated and could soon need a makeover. The block nearest Reception has clothes washing and drying facilities. The site does not have a shop but bread can be ordered from Reception. Opposite Reception there is a takeaway and seating area, hardly a restaurant but a useful facility for those that don't want to cook. There are a few shops on the main road just a short walk from the site. Pricing I feel is a bit on the steep side at €22 per night (2009) for a Municipal but at least you are getting a good quality campsite that can cope with most weather conditions. To counter this the site does have free WiFi which is site wide. This is a very popular overnight site and fills up quite quickly in the busy part of the season.
We have only ever used this site for overnight stays en route so it is difficult to comment on local facilities and places of interestr. Reception can help with this and its certainly a site that could be considered for a longer stay.

Have stayed at this site for several years, on route to the South. This year we stayed for a week in September and had a wonderful time .We used the local bus service to get into town, very easy. Very friendly, efficient folk running the site which is kept exceptionally clean. The bread shop opposite is well placed and the large shopping complex about 10 minutes up the road is brilliant.
Very well placed for days out in Troyes, Epernay and Reims for wine/Champagne tours and the little village of Oye outside Epernay is fascinating as the many small vinyards there supply the larger houses of Epernay and Reims. Verdun is also good for a day out via the motorway to Germany.
The local train to Paris has a car park. Also there are several churches to visit in this area. The Cathedral of St Etienne in the centre of Chalon is very interesting and is continually being restored. Also the Centre of the City has lately been pedestrianised. If interested in historic buildings then you must not miss the Medieval Church at L`Epine just ouside Chalon .
The only fault with this site is that the closing date of October 15th is strictly adhered to. Other than that, we have been unable to fault it.

Wonderful site, and would recommend. Very friendly staff and well kept site. Facilities immaculately clean. Great shopping nearby and garages for fuel. Used primarily as a stop over for those going further afield but we stayed 9 nights (stay 3 nights and on the 4th you don't pay for car and pitch) as we liked the area so much and lots to see. If you don't have a continental electric hook up adaptor the site will lend you one for a 50 Euro deposit. Small open air restaurant / take away on site seemed popular and the chef sells phone cards for the public phone (check the use by date, the one he sold us turned out to have expired in November 2007!) Can highly recommend the Moules and frites. Bakery very close by though you can order at reception and collect from there.

We stopped for one night on the way South and were impressed with the site. Our pitch was well maintained level hardstanding with it's own tap and drain. There were play facilities for children and a pleasant walk round a little pond with waterfowl. A duck knocked on our door the next morning to ask for breakfast, he had heard we had visited a brilliant bakery just up the street for pain au raisin! Needless to say we fed him and he invited all his friends. We hope to stop here again next year.
