This was our favourite campsite that we stayed on in the Orkneys. There is a large field with some pitches overlooking the water (good for ferry and boat watching) and some further back which are more sheltered. Also a hard standing / parking area.
It can get very windy there, but the warden was advising tent campers where to pitch according to the weather forecast. When not windy it was a bit midgy! If staying for several nights you can get a 'reserved' post to put up on your pitch to save it for later, so watch out for these when choosing a spot.
The facilities look a bit 'public toilet' like but were actually fine, and kept clean. Only 2 showers in the ladies so I did have to wait a couple of times for one to become free. You use a 20p for the shower but it lasts for ages. Don't bother with the hairdryer (also 20p) as it is completely useless.
The warden is there in the morning from 9-12 and then 6. 30 - 9 in the evening. The two we saw were both very chatty and friendly. If you arrive outside these times just pitch up and pay later. No need to book.
On one day we drove to Hooton ferry port and went to Hoy for the day as foot passengers. We visited the Scapa Flow museum which was really interesting and there is also a walk around the area to see other related buildings etc. If we go back to the Orkneys we will probably take our campervan across to Hoy and stay a couple of nights to do some walking.
Directly from the campsite there is a lovely coastal walk (which goes all the way to Skara Brae if you have time), although we went only as far as Black Craig and back. We found the path quite by chance.
Stromness is a very long town and it takes about 20 minutes to walk to the ferry terminal, although there is plenty to look at as you walk. Good coffee shop near the ferry and a good tourist info centre. The Co-Op supermarket is at the far end of town.
We would certainly visit this campsite again as it was in a great location, with great views and was very relaxed and friendly.

Easy to find and very well located, with extensive views in one direction to Stromness harbour and to Hoy in the other. Convenient - a 20 minute stroll to Stromness town centre.
There is competition for waterfront pitches but we didn't feel we were packed too closely.
The public have access to the toilets and an area of the coast at the edge of the campsite - again not a problem, but noted that people could be wild-camping and using the facilities for free.
Only two showers in the mens side, but they were always clean, produced copious hot water and gave long showers for 20p. Toilets and showers a bit cramped but still coped with the volume of people on site. We recommend Stromness!

Stayed 2 nights prior to ferry back to mainland. Site has helpful warden morning and evening, good facilities including common room although this was taken over by a large group of campers when we were there. They needed it as we had some torrential rain, but it was awkard for the solo campers who also needed the shelter! Washing up and laundry in same cramped room.
Large grass area with EHU all around, but as we weren't using electricity we were told we should use the hard standing beyond the grass. We were more than happy to do this as it was a very wet weekend! Others used hook ups but parked on same hard standing.
No children on site when we were there but I would be wary as there is some local traffic from dog walkers etc, and there is a sheer drop to the sea on 2 sides, with a low fence one side. Great for watching the ferries.
Walking distance of all activities in Stromness, although we found only one place to eat on Saturday evening without booking in advance. Miles of cliff walks straight from the site and a golf course next door - look out for miss directed golf balls!

Cycled here from Kirkwall when the ferry dropped us off at 11:00pm. It was bitterly cold. If you are cycling please ignore the the signpost directions to the campsite They'll take you up and down dale and after a freezing cycle it's not recommended. Cycle straight through the town. The signage is for campervans and the like.
Stromness is a stunning little town good food and pubs.
The campsite is good with a small lounge where there's a microwave and a chocolate machine. Showers / washing facilities are good.
Went to Yesnaby. Don't take young children unless you're prepared to to have your eyes on them ALL OF THE TIME. Very steep spectacular cliffs. Amazing place.
Skarra Brae I'm unsure about, looks a bit fake.

Sorry but not very impressed at all, a basic camp site, quite expensive and noisy at night, not from the other people camping but from local youths who were driving through to the Quay at the far end of the site, on the Positive side it was very close to Stromness main street (Lovely place)Toilet and shower facilities very basic but clean, But if you do stay on this Camp, Pray that there is a good wind blowing because the Midges will eat you to Death as the camp site is situated so close to the Waters Edge.

We enjoyed our stay on this site, and extended it by a night rather than move on. It is very convenient for exploring the mainland and plenty of interest from the harbour and boats passing (at all hours). Walking distance from The delightful town of Stromness and easy dog walks along the coast from the site. Facilities were fine - plenty of hot water for your 20p shower. Lounge with TV if that is what you want and dishwashing and laundry facilities.

We had two separate stays here and always used the hard standing on the seafront. The views were sensational out over Scapa Flow towards Flotta terminal. Unfortunately, we were 1 day late for a mother and calf Orca visit but still saw lots of seals, birds and ferries. The weather was always dry and windless but I suspect this would be a quite different site in poor weather.
Like Birsay, this Site is operated by Orkney Council which goes some way to explaining the odd pricing and other practices. Facilities are reasonable but Ladies toilets had a strong damp smell and with only two showers each, could get busy, I imagine, in peak periods.
The site is only 5 or so minutes from Stromness ferry terminal and for the graemsay and Hoy boats. Stromness itself is a very pretty town with a lot of history. We had a good meal at The stromness hotel. There are good walks towards Skara Brae and an excellent fish shop just near the school.

This is quite a basic site as far as the facilities go, and cannot understand why they charge 20p for a shower, laundry and dish washing all in the one area, tumble drier worked out rather expensive if you wished your clothes completely dry.
Part-time warden only there morning for a few hours and then again in the evening.
Being a small site it can get quite crowded, as the Island is not very big people tend to do day trips and use it as a base. We stayed a week, and yes, when the grass was cut it was just left but lucky for us we had no rain. It was a lovely site to just sit and watch the boats go in and out of the harbour.
Stromness itself is a lovely little town with lots of interesting shops and it is within a ten minute walk from the site. The Ferry Inn is a good place to eat and there is a Fish & Chip shop that does amazing smoked mackerel fish cakes. The week we were there the Bank of Scotland Cash line was out of order and the banks do not open daily which was a bit of a bind.
There is of course all the history of the island to see, my favourites being the Italian Chapel which was amazing and the Tomb of the Eagles both on South Ronaldsay. Skara Brae was interesting but really busy and being Scottish National Heritage had the usual very expensive shop attached. The Cathedral in Kirkwall is also a must see.
Downside of Orkney, not many places to walk dogs, although there is a good walk along the side of the sea at the site.

A convenient site for the ferry and to walk in to Stromness. Facilities are good but not fancy. There is a useful lounge for cold campers which was well used. Make no mistake: this site is exposed to weather and is always windy. Lots of hook ups but advisable to book in busy season. Booking system is via Orkney Council. Site is well run and warden is around in middle of the day. Good walks and views from site. Stromness itself is an interesting old town with an outstanding art gallery Pier Arts Centre which is well worth a visit.

Stayed here for four nights at the end of May, beginning of June. We arrived on the late ferry, we had pre booked and as instructed found a pitch and hooked up. We were told that the warden would be on site about 9 am the next morning for us to pay. Just as we were settling down to eat our late tea a very loud person stuck their head inside our van demanding payment. It made us feel like criminals, as if we had pitched up and was not going to pay. Now it turned out that this vocal chap was friendly enough, just a little 'enthusiastic' shall we say. We enjoyed our stay, the weather was kind, if it hadn't been I think we would have been blown into the sea on this very exposed site. As said before, the facility's are quite basic, my wife said her shower would not heat up, but the one I used was excellent ! I love Stromness and the 10-15 minute walk into the town is a treat, I could live there. We had no problems with anyone being too close on site or taking our marked pitch whilst we were out. Did all the neolithic and bronze age sites and much more besides. We went to the Art Gallery only to find an exhibition of St. Ives artist's work. We are from St. Ives !
