Stayed for one night on a tuesday. 2 small tents and motorbikes.
Picked this site initially for its close proximity the the ferry port at Stromness. Great location and cracking views of Scapa flow and Hoy's hills. Price very reasonable.
Facilities fine for the price. Showers take 20p coins and run for plenty of time for that price. Toilets and shower also nice and clean.
Vending machine in foyer. Kitchen/Laundry area cramped and not much room once a couple of people are in there doing their dishes. Staff seem to be on site part time for when ferrys come in
TV lounge was a very nice bonus for us with tiny tents when we wanted to get out of the wind. Site is quite exposed to the elements. Well drained level grass pitches.
There is a CO-OP and petrol station in Stromness with all you could ever need daily. Further facilities in Kirkwall. Fish and chip shop plus plenty of pubs serving food in Stromness.
The road from the ferry port through Stromness itself is VERY narrow! Motorhome drivers beware - one got stuck the week before we stayed and was still a conversational topic in the CO-OP! Use the road to the rear of town instead.
Not a great deal to do for kids and the edge of the site it the foreshore which is unfenced
Two criticisms -
1. We camped reasonably near the toilet block along the entrance road and the gents toilet door bangs shut noisily all night long keeping many campers awake. A cheap and easy thing to repair
2. Contractors were on site to cut the grass. It had rained heavily recently and was quite busy. Grass really did not need cutting and the result was grass that was not noticeable shorter, but lots of tents splattered in mud and grass clippings! Could there not be some flexibility in the gardening schedule to allow for some basic common sense
These minor complaints aside, I'd happily stay here again.

This is a great campsite, superbly located by the sea, looking out to Hoy, and with views in the other direction across the bay to the lovely town of Stromness, which is a ten minute walk away.
There is a seal colony by the campsite, and at high tide the seals swim almost touchingly close to you on the footpath above the beach.
I especially recommend this site to dog-owners, as it is far away from busy roads, and your dog can be safely off the lead as soon as you leave the site, with a stunning coastal walk on your door(tent)step.
The wardens are helpful and friendly, facilities are excellent, with spotless showers, a warm sitting room (with a TV!), kettle, microwave, washing machine and tumble-drier.
Stromness has everything you'll probably need on a practical level: good shops, pubs, take-away fish and chips, a museum, an extraordinary art gallery filled with Barbara Hepworth sculptures and Ben Nicholson paintings, . And it's a really pretty place.
The campsite is within easy reach of many of the famous Orcadian sites (Scara Brae, Maes Howe etc. And so it's a great base for a holiday on mainland Orkney.

I camped here on a very windy day and as the previous reviewer mentions, there is little shelter from the wind apart from a low wall in one area.
The views are great across the harbour to Strommness and the very quaint town is in easy walking distance with some good restaurants and a few useful and interesting shops.
This small site is level, well maintained and has all the basic facilities needed including washing and drying. The two wardens I met were both extremely friendly and helpful.
I would be a bit wary if I had small children as there are no barriers on the seaward side of the site.
The site is well situated for cycling to the west of Orkney which has many of the interesting archaeological sites. Maeshowe, Ring of Brodgar, Scara Brae and others are all in an easy days ride as is Kirkwall in the east.

Great campsite. Good facilities, great location (magnificent view across Hoy and Stromness), nice flat pitch and cheap. I stayed on a very nice day so cannot comment on how the site would fare on a windy day. It is exposed with no real shelter. My only gripe was that another set of campers pitched their tent extremely close to mine (guy ropes were mingling) and were clearly allowed to do this by the warden. The site was not that busy and alternative spot could have been selected.

We camped here earlier this year and found the site to be ideal for visiting Orkney Mainland and Hoy.
It is a council run site and the warden is always on duty at the time that the Scrabster ferry is in.
The facilities are basic but adequate and the site is fairly exposed in bad weather. Its great asset is its position on Ness Point with its ever changing views and wonderful opportunities to see the birds and seals from your own pitch!

We were a bit disappointed with the site this year - it would definitely help if the warden was present longer and was more visible when there to help people pitch sensibly and with regard to others.
The views from the site continue to give great pleasure but the site was unpleasantly full at times and we spent more time rough camping as a result. The Council should consider increasing the number of showers and toilets if they are to continue to allow such heavy usage of the site.

We have visited this site for 2 consecutive years, and will be back again this year.
The site is quite small, and very informal, and can (as previous reviewers have commented) get busy in the summer, but we've never found it uncomfortable. The facilities are basic, but have always been very clean when we've been there. The Wardens are very helpful.
Stromness has a good range of shops and it's a pleasant stroll from the site into the town.

This council run site is situated at the entrance to the harbour of Stromness, a short walk from the town and the ferry terminal. The campsite was very busy when we were there and tents were squeezed together on a narrow area next to the site road (the 6m rule was certainly not enforced) but the caravans and motorhomes had a much better position overlooking the sea and could watch the ferries approaching the harbour. There is no warden, so you pick your own spot and someone comes and collects the money once a day. Approach the site via the signposted route through the housing estate behind the town and do not be tempted to take the shorter route through Stromness as is very narrow and twisting. The facilities are in the entrance to the site and consist of a well maintained toilet block and showers and a toilet emptying point which is located at floor level and not easy to use. There is also a Motorhome station located in a layby near the entrance which was in continual use by wild campers. Our impression was the campsite, although excellent, was not really able to cope with the numbers of campers in high season and a permanent warden might alleviate some of the crowding problems.
