 Superb location. We were lucky with the wind, hardly any to speak of in the six days we were here. Agree with previous reviewers' comments re the facilities: OK but could be better. There is no dishwashing area, but you can use the laundry sink if it's free. Now, the 'administrative' arrangements. We had booked (very helpful ladies in the council office) but arrived from Kirkwall to find no help. After sitting (blocking the field entrance) for a while, decided to go and search, finding a 'warden' sitting in there playing with the computer. We were in full view of him but did he offer to come and help, did he thump. Eventually he deigned to come out and point at an area close to another unit, and not designated as a pitch at all. Naturally we had other units very close to us a lot of the time. And, with wardens on site only a few hours every day, plenty of people turn up and pitch where they like, 'what six-metre rule' ? It didn't completely spoil our stay but it could have been so much better.

A great seaside (not a beach) location adjoining a golf course and the coast path. We were fortunate to see seals and orcas close to the shore.
The facilities are fine, but the 20p shower charge is silly on top of the pitch fee, which offers free WiFi, although we found this to be very slow and only available close to the TV lounge.
The site is all grass and not far off level, but the grass was too long during our stay. The warden is great but he is hardly ever there and pitch allocation in late May was first come first served. We had booked a long time ahead but no space was reserved, so it was fortunate we arrived in time to claim one of only 3 remaining pitches. It appears we also need to get our pitch in use sign in foreign languages for it did not stop another motorhome user pinching it!
Overall it is a reasonable site (and there are very few on Orkney), except from the noise from the early morning ferry departure passing 100 yards offshore and what seemed to us to be an administration shambles.

This site does not pick up the grass when it is cut. If you are there when it has been raining be warned you will spend the whole time getting the wet grass out of your tent, van, car, and shoes/boots.
As a man who has spent most of his working life cutting grass for large facilities like council estates, parks and gardens, I can assure everyone it does not cost anymore to collect it than it does to leave it when mowing, nor does it take any longer. Not collecting it is merely careless, lazy and disrespectful to one's clients.
OH and the warden doesn't like dog's, but they do allow them on site.

We arrived on Orkney having taken the 'Pentalina' from Gills Bay to St. Margarets Hope. This is a great and shorter crossing but there is only one way onto the ferry which makes it entertaining when towing! However the guys on board were great and disconnected the caravan, spun it around whilst I did a three point and connected us back up and we were off in a jiffy.
It took a leisurely 45 minutes to drive to Stromness and Point of Ness. I had already read about not attempting to drive through the town (narrow!) so took the back road and arrived to an almost empty site. No warden (he's generally there at 9am and again from 6pm) so I bagged a pitch with power at the front overlooking the harbour of Stomness one way and Graemsay and Hoy the other. Picture perfect with the added pleasure of watching boats and ships coming and going, the local sailing club racing past and of course the wildlife keeping us entertained.
All pitches with power are grass and pretty level with adequate water points. The facilities are clean enough although a little dated and there is also a small lounge and TV area where you can pick up the complimentary WiFi. We stayed for 6 nights by which time the site was probably three quarters full and we could see this is a popular place which makes a reasonable argument for booking here. We did - through the Orkney Council who run it.
We enjoyed our stay here very much and this site was in a good position for touring the Orkney's. Recommended.

Part of our Orkney & Shetland itinerary was to base ourselves at the Point of Ness site for a few days and then “make it up as we went along”. Having booked two nights, we ended up staying for four!
Originally we were due to use the Northlink ferry from Scrabster but it had broken down and we ended up using the Pentalina catamaran ferry from St. Gills Bay instead. We were just about last to board and had to back onto the ferry which was fun! The crossing only takes an hour to St. Margarets Bay & then we had an hours trek across Orkney to get to Stromness and the Point of Ness campsite. As others have said, avoid the town centre and use the “bypass” to get to the site.
It is located on the headland where you have super views of the island of Hoy in one direction & the town of Stromness in the other. The site is a bit exposed when windy and we had all weather scenarios during our four days. T-shirt & shorts one day followed by fog, mist & drizzle the next! The port is quite busy with lots of fishing boats & inter island ferries sailing close by the shore.
On arrival late in the evening there was no warden on site so we pitched up at the large area of hardstanding right by the shoreline which was ideal for us. Electric hook up points were dotted along the edge of the pitches. The site is mainly grassed which, in May, was quite long & could have done with a cut. There are some sheltered grass pitches adjacent to the golf course boundary which is a bit separate from the main grassed area.
The amenities block has showers, laundry, dish washing facilities and a common room where the free WiFi access was available from.
There are good shoreline walks directly from the site passing the golf course & there is lots of evidence of the WW1 & 2 defences as you head past the Noust of Nethertown towards Warebeth and onto Breck Ness. We saw about a dozen seals basking on the rocks plus lots of oyster catchers giving marauding birds a hard time! There were stunning views to the high ground on Hoy which we visited the next day via. The foot ferry to Moaness. The Old Man of Hoy is worth the effort to walk to. [13 mile round trip!]
We used the Ferry Inn in Stromness as a convenient watering hole after our walks. As Scotland now has the opportunity for pubs to be open all day, we were unsurprised to see that the opening time was 9. 00 am and a closing time of 1. 00 am on a Saturday/Sunday!
Whilst on Orkney we also visited the Orkney Brewery & Visitors Centre as well as spending some time in Kirkwall prior to our overnight ferry to Shetland. The Italian Chapel & Churchill Barriers are also worth a visit as are The Stones of Stenness & the Ring of Brogdar. The scuttling of the German Navy in Scapa Flow after WW1 is part of Orkney folklore & we wished we knew more about it when we were there. Having now read up on it, it seems a return visit might be in order!
We would recommend booking your pitch as the site gets quite busy towards the end of May when the Orkney Folk Festival commences.

The site has wonderful views - to the harbour in one direction, and the mountains of Hoy in the other. It is a quite exposed when it's windy, though.
The warden is very helpful and friendly. The amenities block is quite small (and a bit dated) but quite adequate for the number of people staying. The disabled shower is inside the ladies' area, which isn't ideal, but there is a spacious disabled toilet with washbasin which has its own entrance. Showers are 20p and washing machine only £1.
Stromness is an attractive town with good local shops and a Coop at the opposite end of the main street. It's about 15 minutes walk from the campsite and so a bike is handy. It's a good base from which to visit Skara Brae, Ring of Brodgar, Maeshowe etc.

Stayed here for 2 nights during the Folk Festival -the site was full to bursting-understandably! We were unable to have electric hook up due to this demand and early bookers.
We had grassy area as a pitch with a superb view of the sea and Stromness -enjoyed watching the ferry going back and forth.
The shower facilities were basic - situated opposite the loos -just a shower curtain and no area to change/dry in. Sinks situated just as you walk in to the area( Ladies)
We preferred to use our van facilities!
There was a sitting room and washing up facilities -we did not use them so can't comment.
A lovely walk in to Stromness through paved/cobbled streets past picture post card cottages with sea views.
Had food in one of the pubs-decent pub grub and drinks in others. Good Crack as they say-atmosphere brilliant with musicians playing in each of the pubs we visited. Would recommend Stromness at Folk Festival time!
Took the ferry over to Hoy as aday trip-took our bikes and cycled to Rackwick beach and walked to the Old Man of Hoy -great trip. Lots of wildlife.
Would recommend this site on location only -there are only 2 sites that we know of on Orkney mainland ( the other in Kirkwall). Would be a fantastic site if the facilities were improved and refurbished.

Stayed 6 nights at this site. On arrival we were met by a friendly warden who advised the best places for us to set up - the cleanliness of the toilets and showers and the availability of washing machine/dryer and microwave were a bonus. For campers there is a comfortable lounge with tv.
This really is on the point of Mainland and we had lovely sea views. Watched gannets diving and skuas hunting and seals swimming by. Also got to know the ferry times and looked forward to watching 'Hamnavoe' sail by at twighlight with all its lights on.
We were set up close to the front of the site nearest the open bay which was great until storm force winds were forecast - we stayed where we were for one night then moved to the back of the site - it was an experience - as was the ferry journey back to UK mainland in heavy seas. We loved Orkney and plan to return in a couple of years. Well done Stromness.

Lovely site with fantastic views of Hoy and the surrounding area. Facilities really good and very clean and the warden was very helpful. Great coastal path from the site, very handy for dog walking. A short stroll into Stromness which has local shops, a small Co-op, pubs etc. Don't try and drive through Stromness as its very narrow. The site is signposted from the road into Stromness. A great place to base yourself when exploring Orkney

We stayed there for six nights: a wonderful site just on the sea with wonderful sunsets and barking seals.
There is a nice path for coast walking. The ground is grassy and you can find sheltered pitches.
Perfect service with a very friendly warden, very clean facilities although there were many tourists. The lounge is cosy, the kitchen well equipped.
There are just some steps to Stromness with shops and pubs. A golf course is beside the campsite.
It is very good place for recreation. We definitely will return.
