A nice site but beware.....

We recently visited Glen Trothy Caravan site in Monmouth. There were 3 vans in our party and we paid 10 pounds deposit each prior to arriving. Two of us arrived on the Thursday and were put onto our pitch by the owners (After being asked abruptly by the site owner if I know how to reverse a caravan and being nagged that the caravan was 3" out of position). The final member of our party arrived on the Friday but unfortunatly didn't go into reception when they arrived on the site.

The owner marched down the site to "welcome" my friend who was told to leave immediately because he had broken the rules! They then refused to refund the deposit saying "if you don't set off the site immediatly we'll call the police".

If my mate had been rude I would have expected him to be thrown off, but he actually appologised!!

Lovely Campsite set in a beautiful area near Monmouth. Clean loo's & showers. Small area for tents. Campsite mainly consists of Static (touring) caravans who's owners turn up every weekend to cut the grass around their chain-linked fenced off, satelite dished pitches, clean their cars.

OK for couples/small families, but not suitable for anyone going camping as part of a large group due to all the rules and regulations stipulated in the brochure handed to us on arrival. Restaurant/bar mentioned in other posters review (next door to site) is now boarded up and was no longer open when we were there.

Monmouth is about one and a half miles away, there are no pubs in the village, the nearest one is the Somerset Arms 2 miles in the opposite direction to Monmouth,(not in walking distance) or in Monmouth itself.

A nice, level and very well kept site which is about 2 miles from the centre of Monmouth, and has easy access to the lovely Wye valley.

We paid £7 per night for a basic (no EHU) pitch. Caravans and camper vans and seasonal vans are on the main field near the playground. Tents are on the field behind, and there is another overflow field behind that. Pitching is soft and easy.

The toilet and showers (20p) are old fashioned, but clean and adequate with hairdryers (20p) As there were only 3 showers (Ladies) and 1 was out of order, there was a bit of a queue on Sat/Sun morning when the weekend campers turned up, at other times they were relatively quiet.

There is an indoor dishwashing facility with laundry next door and chemical waste disposal. All in the same block as the showers and toilets.

There is no shop or club on site, and the pub/hotel next door is closed down, and looks unsightly as it is boarded up and overgrown. It's a shame it's closed as we had envisages spendign a few pleasant evenings there.

Monmouth is a nice town, with all amenities, supermarkets, pubs, restaurants, cafes, cashpoints. There is even a Milletts if you need any camping gear! It is a short bus ride (£1.60) or longer walk from Glen Trothy. There is also a good bus service to nearby places such as Ross-on-Wye, Symmonds Yat and the Forest of Dean for sightseeing/walking/canoeing and river cruises.
Nice place for a relaxing long weekend with plenty to do and see.

Great place to spend a weekend!

Quiet spot but with easy access to the A40, Glen Trothy makes a lovely place to spend a couple of lazy days.

Basic toilet and showering facilities (although very clean), great inside dishwashing area, laundry room, children's play area, electric hook ups.

Friendly owners, cheap (we paid £7 per night for non-electric) and next door to country pub.

Campers and tourers are kept seperate. Camping field has marked pitches but there is a nice amount of space.
