First time at this lovely site for a two nights stay friendly wardens. Some great walks straight from the site and the coast to coast cycle route near. Usual CCC facilities clean warm, we use own shower so cant comment on one provided, we have already booked to return.
Very close to river and all the children on the site looked like they were having a great time in the woods and fishing in the river. Great fish and chip shop in Haltwhistle only 5 min drive away well worth buying and saving cooking.

This site is at the bottom of a very steep access road, could be a problem if your towing car is struggling with a big caravan. The site Managers are very friendly and helpful and will assist in placing you on a pitch. Unfortunately we had requested a grass pitch and by the end of our stay (7 nights) our jockey wheel had sunk 6 inches into the mud. The site Manager helped us out and said that all the caravan pitches would be hard standings by next year.
The site and facilities are very clean and well maintained. For grocery shopping Haltwhistle has a small Sainsbury's but there is a very large Tesco store in Hexham. The area is very beautiful with walks direct from the site. It is an ideal base for touring south Northumberland and especially Hadrian's Wall. Well worth a visit.

We visited in May in a small tent, our 1st time at the site.
The approach was not a problem as previous reviewers have stated but there again we did not have a caravan behind us. As 90% were caravans I don't think it was a huge problem and I have definitely been to sites with worse access problems which have single track roads and steep ascents and descents leading to them.
The site was almost full and the wardens were unsure where to pitch us as there were few choices, we ended up on a soggy pitch and had to put our tent on the back border to avoid a mudbath. We were there for 2 nights and although the water drained it was very muddy and slick underfoot.
The wardens were a pleasant couple who live in a caravan at the entrance. They opened a small shop for a couple of hours a day selling basic groceries. Haltwhistle is a few miles away, not exactly a tourist attraction but it has some small supermarkets for provisions. The surrounding area is beautiful countryside.
The site is clean and pitches average size, not the biggest we have had but adequate. The site is next to a river and a wood where you can walk your dog which was very good (especially as we had a dog!) with bins at the entrance.
The toilet block was heated and had plenty of hot water with no queues. They were clean. The showers could have been bigger for changing but this is a common problem which some new blocks on other sites have addressed.
The nearest pub is a nice walk of about 20 or so minutes and is called the Wallace Arms. It was welcoming (as was our dog). There is a map available at camp reception for 20p to guide you there. We were lucky to have music entertainment by some folk singers playing guitar and some more modern music which made for a very pleasant evening. The food was good and also reasonably priced.
The history surrounding you cannot be beaten with Hadrians's Wall and Roman forts a short drive away. We spent a day walking the area and next to the Wall with stunning views to Scotland borders to the North and the North Pennine Range to the South.
The site is located in a nice area and is well maintained and had a quiet atmosphere. Children were welcome. If the weather had been better with a bit of sunshine it would have been great but as it was damp and cold during our stay this limits your appreciation of what was a very good site.

We arrived here early evening and it was just before a thunderstorm. The site we were escorted to was rather waterlogged and as we have quite a large tent it was a bit awkward to get positioned while remaining dry.
The site is in a lovely setting by a river and is located on an old quarry so retains the water a bit! The site facilities block is kept very clean and is very pleasant to use.
However, my wife was caught driving slightly too fast and a member of staff halted her on the track and warned her in a very loud aggressive manner not to speed. A quiet gentle reminder would have been quite sufficient and not left her feeling humiliated in front of all the other campers!
However, there are beautiful walks in the surrounding area and we travelled to Haltwhistle, Alston and visited some mining museums (Nenthead) and even travelled to the Beamish open air museum. We also went over to check out the Lake District for a day although it took about an hour to get there

Just got home from a fantastic week at this campsite. The site is in a beautiful location, with the river South Tyne flowing right past and shady trees housing a wonderful selection of birdlife.
The facilities are excellent, plenty of hot water (not on a timed button), immaculately clean showers and toilets plus good laundry and wash up equipment provided.
The managers and staff are very welcoming and helpful and the little shop has main provisions and a few extras like icecreams and sweets.
The plots are large and the site is generally very quiet even though it was full the whole time we were there.
We could find nothing to criticise and will definitely be returning in the future.

My husband, myself and our little westie visited this site earlier in the year and have booked again for another couple of visits. We found the site wardens extremely helpful and friendly and the facilities were immaculately clean and warm. The showers which are free are long lasting and the water is lovely and hot, plenty of space to put your shower gels etc., and loads of room get dressed. The site itself is very quiet and secluded and the dog walk on site is beautiful, it runs alongside the river and through a wooded area. Everywhere you walk off site is really stunning scenery, perfect for those like us who like to walk. A small shop is on site selling basics and ice-cream etc., Looking forward to our next visit!

We used this site for an over night stop, we found the couple who ran this site very nice. It is a basic site, we had a hard standing which was gravel and backed on to the river which is very picturesque but unsuitable for young children and a very watchful eye is needed here, as it is not fenced off.
The kids enjoyed riding round the site on their bikes, but nothing else on site to do for them, the toilet blocks were spotless and well kept.
Overall a very quiet peaceful site, if that's what you want from a site this would be perfect.

I have returned to caravanning after a break of nearly 40 years. (Been boating!) Those were the days when one could just stop when one found a lonely place.
Of course, I could not manage these days without electricity and showers but these facilities come at a price. We found this site much crowded although everything was in good order with a real welcome.
Horses for courses, I suppose, but Certified Sites for us.

This is the third year that we have visited Haltwhistle for a weekend. It will not be the last. The site is in a secluded spot with woodland on three sides, & the river South Tyne on the other.
The facilities are clean & well maintained, but basic. There is a toilet block with plenty of hot water for showers, & a small shop selling basic groceries, sweets & ice cream. There is no playground, or anywhere for ball games which is a pity. There is a nice walk along the river & through the adjacent woodland, managed by the National Trust (No charge). The South Tyne cycle trail runs close by, & is an excellent way to explore the local area free from traffic. Hadrian's wall runs just north of Haltwhistle & is surely a major reason to visit. The nearby Roman fort & town of Vindolanda with its on-going excavations, museum & reproduction Roman buildings is superb. The writing tablets un-earthed there were recently voted the nation's top treasure by the British Museum.
Haltwhistle is a short drive, bus ride or walk away. There is a range of shops as well as a supermarket, Indian & Chinese takeaways along with a fish & chip shop, and of course several good pubs.
There is really only one down side, & that is an effect of the recent wet weather, but it has been noted on all of our visits. The site can become boggy. The road is fine, but the grass pitches do get wet. There were a couple of really muddy spots where tents had been, & some pitches roped off with tyre tracks scarring the grass. We opted for hard standing this time to avoid problems. In all, a lovely spot in spite of the mud.

Just returned from this site. Whilst I agree with most of the previous comments, friendly staff, clean etc., it is not a site I will be visiting again. We were fortunate in that we were in the 'Spinney' and had plenty of room but I thought the rest of the site was a bit crowded. Also my partner is disabled and there are no specific disabled facilities so it makes life a wee bit awkward. Having said that, the site and surrounding area is fantastic for dog owners, miles of paths and woodland walks. Weather was good and most people seemed to be enjoying themselves judging by the thick cloud of bbq smoke drifing over our pitch, but unlike our previous site in Scotland where everyone spoke, here at Haltwhistle it was a struggle to get a 'good morning' out of folk!
