Look, it's easy to knock this site, I totally agree with some of the comments made by previous reviewers. This site's facilities are a wee bit dated, yes. However, this is my second time reviewing this site and my opinion has not changed one bit, this is quite frankly one of the best sites we have ever stayed at.
20 paces from a beautiful beach. The most amazing board walk trail along to the harbour. Indoor pool, and the historically jaw dropping outdoor pool right on your doorstep. Generous pitches - ok, we stayed at the end of the season and it was relatively quiet. The warden did say that it had been a very busy summer despite the poor weather, so I guess when the site was full it might not seem as generous.
The toilet blocks are spotless, which is more than can be said for some more modern blocks on other sites we have been to. If you visit this site before it is renovated by the organisation who has taken it over, take the chance to visit the art deco heaven that is the 'top' block - I guarantee you will not experience a more effective shower set up than the ones in this block - space for a shower and space to get changed without having to navigate your way through water on the floor, a bench, hooks - character and so what if you've to push a button a few times, the showers are free, hot and interesting.
We love this site and the warden and the sound of the gulls in the morning, the smell of the sea in the evening, the joyous noise and laughter coming from the open air pool, the fish and chips and the experience of being somewhere that does not look and feel like every other site you visit.
The architectural beauty of the site and surroundings more than makes up for the odd bits of grass cuttings that are left lying about. Love this site and can't wait to go back before the end of September. Please, please 'organisation that has taken over this site and which we are members of', don't make too many changes and remove the quirky, different and unique aspects of this site that make it so special.

I stayed here for 4 nights last year after originally just turning up and asking for a 3 night stay which was no problem at all to the friendly warden, but my daughter enjoyed the surrounding area that much we asked for an extra night, , yes the toilet blocks may have been dated and it was up for sale so it was obvious that the council would not be spending any money on it, but they were certainly clean and the top block was huge and well set out. The blocks had character about them not something you get with newer modern ones (which arent always what there made out to be). The warden was very friendly and helpful during our stay, we pitched our tent in the corner closest to the pool and site entrance and found it very peaceful and had no trouble from anyone passing by at night. There was no need for children's play area on site as there is a perfectly good one beside the pool just yards away.
This year 2013 I tried to phone and book a place for my tent but being a non member to the newly bought cc site I was informed I had to phone the site direct but could not do so until it opened in July. So when the time came to phone I did and was told it was fully booked months before and I wouldn't get a space till middle of September which I found very disappointing.
Therefore we camped elsewhere and decided that this once great site would be visited no more, however on a day trip to the pool on one of the days I had requested to stay I had a good look over the new fence to the site and could see that yes there was plenty space available on the grass for a small tent, the new block in the middle that they have built may look nice elsewhere it has made the site lose its charm and character.
Im sure the new wardens would be very helpful but I think the cc just want to have caravans here now and not interested in catering for tents altough they say they have 8 pitches for them.
Once a happy camper at this site. But not now with the changes and new ownership.
I would rate this site based on last years stay before the cc took it over.

Had a short 3 day break here. Site is still run by Aberdeenshire Council although I believe it is up for sale.
In very good location near beach and 2 swimming pools (outdoor & indoor) both of which are good. Beach a bit stony but there is some sand.
As one other review said the grass cuttings are not collected making it a bit untidy. There is a bizarre barrier at the gate which is 1. 8m high allowing most small cars to pass under. It's not locked but the warden gets annoyed if you open it yourself.
Toilets are old (art deco 50s style) but reasonably clean, top block is more spacious.
There isn't a child play area on site but there's one nearby on the far side of the swimming pool.
I have 2 complaints. Firstly was the noise caused by an unbelievable number of dogs. It seemed that everyone had at least 1 dog, the tent next to us had 5 dogs one of which had to be chased out of our caravan. If you like being wakened by yapping and barking at 6am then this is the site for you.
My second complaint was the way we were crammed in. There are numbered pitches but despite this the warden squeezed a tent into the space between us and the next pitch so that the tent could be beside their friends. We were asked to move our car to make room. This would not happen on a club site as there are minimum separation distances due to fire safety, does this not apply to a council run site?
We enjoyed Stonehaven very much but won't be coming back to this site.

Visited this site for 1 night at the end of April. This area had been hit by heavy rain for about 3wks previous to our visit and the whole site was very water logged.
The Warden told us it took 4 people to push a campervan out the previous day. The warden ken lives in a static on site and was always on hand if help was needed.
The site has a 3star rating but we found it hard to know why? There doesn't seem to be any level pitches, the toilets and shower blocks (which there are 2 of) are very tired and very dated.
The grass had been cut but not collected so made for a very messy site!
Stonehaven itself is a nice little coastal town with a nice variety of shops. The site is near the beech and next to an outdoor heated swimming pool and park. It has a good harbour area with a museum and a few pubs/restaurants. The town is only a 5-10 min walk from the site.
We ate at the tandoori heaven and it was superb! Also great ice-cream shop near by called aunt bettys well worth a visit.
All in all a nice night away but wont be returning to this site

Firstly, can I say how difficult it is to contact anyone re the site. I completed an online enquiry form (the link is available via UKCampsite.co.uk); this is an Aberdeenshire Council form. No one got back to me re this despite me leaving my mobile number and email address. Undaunted, I decided to try the telephone number advertised via the Council site, and eventually got through to the answering machine.
I had to ring a couple of times before anyone returned my call, and even then I never spoke to anyone personally, there was a message left on my voicemail re the booking enquiry.
I am always loathe to turn up at a site without pre-booking a pitch, especially with young children to think of, and I would suggest that you persevere in contacting the warden as, even towards the end of the season in September the site was very busy and there were only a few pitches for tourers left. That being said, they did have a note of our booking and were expecting us.
The site is situated a stone's throw from the beach, which, when the tide is out, is a rock pool delight; there is a sandy strip of beach further up and a lovely walk along to the harbour at Stonehaven.
The site itself is a mixture of touring pitches, camping pitches and statics. Pitches are hardstanding with grassy areas to the side for an awning. The pitches were very spacious allowing plenty room between you and the next pitch.
The Park is well sign posted through Stonehaven, until you turn off the main road and head down to the promenade. When you reach a t-junction, with the sea directly in front of you, you can see a caravan park on the right hand side, mainly statics. This is not Queen Elizabeth site. We turned into this site by mistake, and the guys on this site told us that at least a couple of caravans do this a week - this in itself is not so bad but there is absolutely no turning room in the site for tourers to exit, we eventually had to unhitch the van and turn it manually to exit the site and get back on to the main road.
It is not sign posted that you need to turn to the left at the t-junction to get to the Queen Elizabeth site - this could have been better and might stop the confusion.
The site itself is actually very pleasant - facilities are very clean (although a bit '1970's'), but totally functional, plenty of hot water, individual shower cubicles with a stool and hook (push button shower but the length of time the spray stayed on was quite long).
There are 2 toilet/shower blocks, entry to which is with a 5 or 6 digit 'code' (depending where you are on the site), which is kind of frustrating when you have kids and they want to be independent and go to the loo themselves, but you may need to accompany them to make sure that the code is entered correctly.
Our kids (aged 11 & 9), just loved the park and skate park adjacent to the main site and spent most of the time we were at the site on their scooters or bikes at the play park.
We heard no noise from the playpark itself after dark, unlike some of the previous reviews, unlike the noise from our fellow caravanners (more of that in a minute).
There is also the heated outdoor swimming pool right next door, this was the last weekend of the season for the pool, but it looked fantastic and we will definitely take a visit there next summer.
All the previous comments about the Fish and Chip shop, ice cream parlour, etc are all true, very busy and delicious, well recommended. There is a good sized Co-Op 10 mins away and we had a great Indian take away from the Nu-Spice on the High Street.
This is a cracking wee site in a fantastic location, we will definitely be back next season, although we are led to believe that this is the last year that the Council is to operate the site and that it has been taken over by a private company.
It is already a 'Certified Site'. This may well mean an improvement to the general facilities, but really, nothing could be done to improve upon the location, fantastic place to visit and well worth returning to.

Just back from a long weekend to Stonehaven and looking forward to going back. We had excellent weather and really nice wardens!
Only a few strides from the beach with a couple of miles of sand, excellent walk over to the Harbour which has many bistro style pubs and fish bars. 2 minutes walk to the Bay chipper along the prom, well worth a visit and next to Aunt Bettys ice cream shop, the kids loved there!
There is the local pool 3 minutes walk and outdoor pool next door although not open until the end of May, looks good though! Just across from the pool is a very large park, the kids were never away from it. There is a CO-OP 5 minutes walk away and quite large with main shopping square a further 2 minutes walk.
Not much on site, the usual shower blocks, did not use the laundry, plenty of space on the pitches.
Now for the downsides, the site is along the prom and when busy very difficult to swing the van round when leaving, the cars were parked everywhere and people trying to get round the corner.
The power kept tripping every night between 8-10pm and around 9-10am in the morning due to the power consumption, the warden was very happy to reset but we felt sorry that he was up and down around 20 times in 1 evening to reset the breakers, the council should really get that checked out.
All in all very nice break and be back soon thanks to the service of the wardens!

Excellent Park situated on the edge of town next to the sea and the heated outdoor swimming pool. A short walk away to the centre with plenty of shops and pubs & restaurants, plenty to do and a large supermarket close by. The site is not too big but well maintained and excellent shower facilities with drying room.
We are definitely going back.

Very nice camp site, clean toilet block and right on the beach. Make sure you don't pitch too close the the park as the local youths are out quite late at the weekend. Noise was not that bad, just chatting. Local Auntie Betty's cones are amazing! You park you car right next to your tent which is real handy.
Can be a bit windy at times, but only when putting up and taking the tent down!

Visited this site for 1 night with friends. We were allocated pitches right behind the reception block which was very handy as the warden let us inflate our airbeds in the reception area!
Tents are pitched very close together though! OK when you are with friends but it would have been a bit intrusive if you were next to strangers! Good toilet and shower facilities but a bit shabby.
Site very close to beach and open air pool which was great! We were woken in the middle of the night by the police slamming into the barrier for some inexplicable reason. They smashed the light off their vehicle which was very loud and also wakened all the seagulls! The warden was not pleased either!
Stonehaven is a lovely wee town - we enjoyed a walk on the Sunday to Dunottar Castle in glorious sunshine, would definitely recommend. Don't miss the deep fried Mars Bars too - you have to try!
