After many years or 'outdoorsy' holidays (ie, remote self-catering cottages / camping / mountain bothying) We decided that due to the insane prices being charged by cottage rentals in recent years, we'd invest in a touring caravan. Not having any experience at all of caravanning, we decided that the maiden voyage for our expedition had to be fairly close to home (just in case of any disasters!) so we decided on a few days away, mid week, here at Freshwater, about 2 hours drive away.
We arrived without incident & were greeted by a very friendly husband & wife (who's names I cannot recall) I explained we were first timers, & they were very happy to answer all our niggly little questions.I'd already booked online through the Caravan Club so booking in was easy peasy. We were told just to go round, find & pitch then come back later to pick up a swipe key for the gated entry.
We decided to pitch in the bottom, furthest point away to allow for more privacy. We have a 24' twin axle caravan which can be a tad difficult to turn, but as we are both HGV class 1 drivers we were ok.Those who struggle to reverse might have a bit of a problem with these end pitches as they are right on a bend & will involve a blind side reverse.
As we didn't really know the procedure at a campsite, we went for a quick nosey round & soon found everything we needed. The service point was clearly marked (I was worried about finding water taps & silly things like that!)& I was impressed with how easy/clean the area was in which to empty the chemical toilet.
The shower & toilet facilities were excellent.Although this was our first time away & I have nothing to compare it to, we've been used to 'rough camping' so I was very pleasantly surprised at how nice it all was.
Our party consisted of myself, my husband & the Dexter Dawg-a 7 year old Springer.Like most water dogs, the Dexter loved the beach, which was only a 5 minute walk away (the toilets leading down to the beach were v. handy & nice & clean) The beach was wonderful-it was October, but I was able to go for a swim & even got sunburnt!
The pub in the village at the top of the hill was very nice, excellent food & good beer.It also turned out that the owner was a mutual friend-a fellow HGV driver, what a small world! :)
Tenby is well worth a visit.Saundersfoot not so-a bit tacky really. We spent our 3 day break just walking along the coast, & hardly used the car, but we are very easy to please & don't need bright lights & slot machines to entertain us.
We'll definitely be returning!

As previously stated, the facilities on this site are excellent; good showers (although could do with a few more as there were queues at peak times), well maintained toilets, washing-up sinks etc. The pitches themselves were well looked after although fairly small (for tents - more on this later).
However, there were a few issues outside of the site which affected us:
1. The beach should have been great as it was the only one we went to that didn't have a 10 minute walk and/or a steep flight of stairs to get to. However, it had a stream running down it which looked great BUT there was a sign saying it contained poisonous algae and so you had to keep out of it - trying to keep our kids (6 and 3) out of that would have been hard work. Also, probably due to its accessibility, the beach was a dog walkers paradise and much as I love dogs, I have never seen so many on a beach at one time and they ALL seemed to be doing their toilet. Their owners were being very good at picking up the solid waste but we just didn't feel comfortable with young kids on this beach.
2. The site is very isolated. Although the site reception sells a few basics (literally a couple of shelves worth), the nearest shop is 2 (twisty, country road) miles away and even that is only a small Spar. Because there is no EHU on any of the tent pitches, you can't easily store food and so we spent an inordinate amount of time driving to this shop and they didn't always have everything we needed.
3. The local pubs are great; in fact they are too good - we found it impossible to go to any of them without booking in advance - a bit frustrating if you needed to go out because the Spar had no burgers left for a BBQ !
Finally, we weren't hugely happy with our welcome. We booked our pitch back in March and clearly stated the size of our tent. I then also confirmed the booking 3 days before we arrived. However, on arrival we got a school mistress-type dressing down because of the size of our tent - even though the dimensions were clearly written on their booking sheet they showed us. It turned out they only had one tent pitch big enough and we were 'lucky' that it had just been vacated that day. They insinuated that they would have turned us away (after a 250 mile, 6 hour drive) if we had turned up and that pitch hadn't been free! The next day, another family turned up with an even bigger tent and a disabled child (hence the big tent) AND they had been told that the pitches had EHU! They spent the first evening in a very dark tent with a lot of wasted electric equipment, their tent in the bushes on one side and right up against the site road on the other.
Apologies if I seem negative - it wasn't a disastrous week but I just wanted to highlight all the niggly things that you don't normally find out until afterwards.
Admittedly, we wouldn't go back because of the lack of EHU for tents (it was an experiment for us) and the lack of pitch choice but others may find our problems minor.

If you want a site close to the sea with a lovely beach for the kids this could be the one for you. This site is located about 5 minutes walk from the beach at Freshwater East about 4 miles from Pembroke and is owned by the Caravan Club. It is open March to October for members, non-members and campers.
Welcome on arrival was good with clear explanation of facilities and we found the wardens cheerful and helpful even though the site was very busy during our stay.
There are 130 touring pitches of which 65 are hardstandings. Pitches are part sloping so you may need levelling blocks.
The site is long so there are two heated toilet blocks with showers (including wet suit shower/washdown), WCs and privacy cubicles. Also a disabled facility in one block, washing up/vegetable preparation areas and laundry facilities. The toilet block was very clean.
Service points around the site for water and rubbish disposal. Also chemical disposal facilities. There is a public telephone on site because most mobile phones do not get a signal. The TV signal isn’t brilliant but there is a booster system on the bollards.
There is no dog walk on site but miles of walks around.
Shopping facilities at the Spar in the garage at Lamphey about 2 miles away or larger supermarket in Pembroke Dock.
We paid £14.30 per night for standard hardstanding pitch with 16amp electrical hook-up, caravan, awning and two adults.
Local attractions include:
• The beach at Freshwater East, just a short walk from the site
• Pembrokeshire coastal footpath http://www.Pcnpa.Org.Uk runs past the site. The total length is 186 miles if you like a good challenge.
• Stackpole Estate (National Trust) http://www.Nationaltrust.Org.Uk/main/w-stackpole-wildlife_walk.Pdf
• Stackpole Quay and Barafundle Bay http://www.Walesinstyle.Com/things_to_do/pembrokeshire/barafundle_bay_and_stackpole_quay.Aspx . You’ll have to park at Stackpole Quay and walk to Barafundle Bay but well worth the coastal walk.
• Tenby for its museum and art gallery http://www.Tenbymuseum.Org.Uk beaches and merchants house http://www.Nationaltrust.Org.Uk/main/w-tudormerchantshouse
• Colby Woodland Garden (National Trust) http://www.Nationaltrust.Org.Uk/main/w-colbywoodlandgarden
The weather was gorgeous for our stay and this site is on our list of ‘must visit again’.

Spent 5 nights here during October 08.
Facilities and pitches are as you expect from the Caravan Club – faultless, except the slope to the pitches. I don’t know why sites bother to put hard standings in if they don’t make them level. From what we could see, all motorhomes had their level blocks out.
The location is not remote, but there are limited activities within walking distance. Plus the main road out from the site is a good uphill walk, especially if you’re the one pushing the pram!
The holiday complex next to the site has a bar, but we never ventured in. From the sound of things, I think it’s more for younger groups than families.
The beach is good with proper sand, plenty of pebbles to cross though if you want a paddle or swim when the tide is out. Sand dunes to roam about in too plus plenty of Pembrokeshire coastal paths to explore
We did take the motorhome off site to Tenby and other surrounding places. Tenby has a car park which accepts motorhomes. The attendants here were very motorhome friendly allowing us to park where we wished. This was due to it being out of season and the car park being empty. I don’t think they would let you take up 4 bays in the season, but you can still use the coach area and at £3 for the day you can not complain. You can also park on the sea front if you can find space.
Pembroke dock is only a 10 minute drive away and has two supermarkets on offer, but nothing else.
We also visited Carew Castle and managed to park our van here too. The van is 24ft long so we accept parking may be a problem, but always happy when its not. Again, during the summer months, parking a motorhome may be a problem even if the overflow car park is open. Get there early and you should be fine. The car park is free and there is walking in the area and a pub opposite – we never tried the pub.
We ate at a hotel in Lamphey on the A4139, only a two minute drive from the site, and again we managed to find space in their car park for the van! Can’t recall the name of the hotel, but it was on the main road in Lamphey and not the Best Western which is further in to Lamphey. If you fancy some nice food try here, we loved it as did our children (almost 4 and 2). The chef was nice enough to do a children’s version of the steak at a reasonable cost. The food was not your usual pub grub and at a reasonable price.
We would definitely stay here again, but probably not for a few years until the children are older and able to walk further with out a pram – we can try out the many coastal paths near the site then.

I wouldn't imagine families with older children would find that this site suits them, but walkers, nature-lovers, those with small children (fabulous beach) and older couples looking for a quiet and lovely location as a base for exploring the area should all find it really fits the bill. We come into the last of those categories and the only thing that disappointed us was the miserable June weather which was of course the same nationally; the long, narrow nature of the site seemed to make it something of a wind-tunnel, though I can see how in better weather it could as easily be a sun-trap.
As a Caravan Club site the quality of the facilities and staffing were - as you almost come to take for granted - excellent, but beyond that we were struck by what seemed the immediate air of friendliness about the site. Maybe we were just lucky, but it does seem to us that some places have more social warmth than others? We had some electrical problems on the day we were due to leave (as in caravan indicators failing to work) which forced us to stay an extra 24 hours but the general helpfulness of the wardens and other caravanners was much appreciated. Eventually we called the caravan repair service advertised on site. I can't recall the company name but Rob, the guy who turned up to fix our problem, was excellent. Recommended, without reservation.
Everyone mentions the closeness and quality of the beach. What we liked best was the coastal path leading west from the site. It's a steep climb if, like me, you're past your prime and have some mobility difficulties but well worth the effort once you're on the heights above the bay and looking down the sweep of the deserted coastline, especially in the late evening. If, also like us, history interests you, there are places within easy distance to keep you going for a good few days. Pembroke Castle is well worth a visit. So is Carew Castle and its nearby tidal water mill. The cathedral at St David's, Britain's smallest city, comes as a visual surprise, when you stumble on a massive building at the heart of what seems a tiny market town; and Tenby is within easy reach with some excellent fish and chips and the odd local attraction - an elderly gentleman sitting looking out over the harbour with a white parrot on his shoulder.
Best quiet memory for me though, late on the last evening, sitting outside the van with fearless rabbits scuttling all around, looking up across the steep field above the site to see a fox stalking prey amongst the sheep and a single, huge buzzard slowly circling way above. Made the forced extra day worthwhile!

This is a favourite site which we have used for many years. Situated just above an excellent beach, the pitches are strung out on three levels along a valley. (Expect a healthy trek to reception if you are at the far end!)
Analogue TV feed is provided by the hook-up bollard (No TV or mobile reception down in the dip)
This is an excellent base for exploring the area, with the best beach in Britain (Barafundle) just a few miles away.

Excellent site. We stayed for 3 nights and throughly enjoyed our stay. Wonderful location with an excellent beach only 5 minutes away. Superb facilities with two very clean and modern shower blocks available. The staff are wonderful and very friendly. This is the benchmark of all sites for me from now on!
I will be going back in 2008 that's for sure.

Spent four nights at this wonderful site about ten miles west of Tenby, close to Pembroke. Very clean and well laid out, friendly wardens, modern clean toilet blocks with hot showers. There is a small shop, previous reviews talk about the extensive stock, we only saw a few essentials, maybe there’s a larger section that opens later in the season. Take a TV lead to connect to the sites piped supply (make it very long as you may be a few pitches away from the hook-up point) as there’s no reception (or mobile phone reception) being down in a dip.
Close to a wide quiet gently sloping sandy bay with cliff top walks either side. If you’re at the far end of the site it’s not quite two minutes to the beach but well worth the short walk. Plenty to do within a few miles and most services (supermarkets etc) available in Pembroke itself about four miles away.
Finally, there is a very nice pub in the village, the ‘Freshwater Inn’.

Just spent 9 nights on this superb site. Which was, at the time of our visit in peak season, very busy. The warden and assistant warden were fantastic. We had a small problem the day we arrived due to the recent heavy rainfall and they were very helpful.
The site is very quiet and all the facilities spotlessly clean. The shop sells a very extensive range of products from daily papers to chicken joints, burgers etc for the bbq. My only criticism was there are "no cycling" signs around the site but the kids raced everywhere on their mountian bikes and scooters, unchecked. There is a Tescos and Asda 7 miles away in Pembroke. And the Freshwater Inn 2 mins drive from the site, does superb food and the portions are enormous. There is also a Spar at a nearby garage and a Londis, both withinn 5 mins from the site.
As stated on other reviews, the beach is right outside the site and is lovely. Plenty to do in the surrounding beautiful countryside, lovely beaches everywhere. Mobile phones won't work on the site, theres no signal, you have to wait till you get back on the main road at the top of the hill. TV reception is the same but there are TV points on the EHU posts and the office sells 25 metre co-axial cables. The only minus point for the location is the site is at the bottom of a hill and a steep one at that, so make sure your car is not at its towing limit.
