Been here 3 times now since we discovered it last year. Very convenient stop off as it is close to the motorway. This is a small, pleasant, well kept, tiered site, with a mix of grass and hard standing pitches.

The toilet facilities are fairly basic but spotlessly clean and all you need really. The owners are friendly and helpful and live in the bungalow next door. The site is in a single track lane and the entrance is fairly tight if you have a large outfit. The busy railway line is close by so you can hear the trains but this doesn't spoil your enjoyment of the site.

We like a site where we don't have to use the car all the time and Thacka Lea is good for this as you can walk into Penrith in 10mins. There is also a good dog walk around a small nature reserve right opposite the site.

Penrith itself is great to wander round with plenty shops, cafes, bars and castle ruins to explore.

Near the station the Cumbrian Food Hall is worth a visit with a great selection of fresh veg, meats, pies and hot takeaway food. If you are setting off on a picnic they have take a away salads, sandwiches, pies and individually wrapped cakes. The Agricultural Inn next to Morrisons is good for an evening meal, they serve tasty bar food in large portions. Good idea to book at the weekends if you want to sit in the dining area but you can also eat in the bar.

All in all Thacka Lea is a good convenient little site in a nice area that ticks all our boxes.

Brill' site- used it as a base to travel around lakes, close to bus station (15 min walk). Owner very nice, responded very quickly to problem (minor). Only one shower per gender, but didn't have to wait on any day. Would recommend this site to couples- not a kids site. Garage shop couple of minutes away- nice pubs/cafes in town, which is very unspoilt. Ulswater worth a trip, good bus ride- but bus to Windermere fantastic, better than car as you see everything & can take piccies, also go to Grassmere to see Wordsworth home, reaaly good.

Useful site for coast to coast bike ride.

Location

A ten minute walk from the town of Penrith. It's definitely worth a visit - great pubs and a great atmosphere. A useful base for the Lake District but close to the town.

Facilities

Generally well maintained, though quite dated. Large pitches, all with electricity.

Price

Around £16 per night for two people with electricity.

Great site!

Will be back.

We have just returned from this lovely site which we used as a base whilst visiting the Kendal calling festival.

We received a lovely friendly welcome and soon got set up. It is a very tidy site, lovely and clean and very easy to find, straight off the motorway. The town is a five minute walk and with three supermarkets even closer.

The White Horse pub is a great place to visit for a lovely meal at a great price and with great deco inside.

The only pointers about the site (don't want to call them negative)I can think of would be no washing up facilities and if you have younger children there's not much for them to do.

I can however safely say it will not stop us from coming back to this site in the very near future.

Absolutely brilliant, Jubilee weekend, £13 per night + £2 per night for an awning. You can`t go wrong.

As always, a lovely warm welcome from the owner.

Spotless throughout, (toilets, showers, grounds etc)

Showers are 40p but. Who cares??, no washing up facilities but again not a problem.

Would recommend to everyone, friends of ours going next week for a fortnight so speaks for itself.

On a National Cycle Network Route too so for us just adds more to the appeal.

Short walk into Penrith with lots of shops, pubs and eating places.

After hours of on-line searching this is the ONLY site that suited our (middle-aged couple with labrador, Barney - nearby dog walks) needs (easy access from main road, A66, opps to explore whole lakes with little backtracking of same roads, 5 mins walk into town for evening food and drink)

This immaculate, well-serviced site, (no laundry, pay for showers, but who needs them when there's sink facilities in every toilet?) is run by lovely, gentle and obliging, Mrs Anderson.

At £13 (inc electric, awning extra) per night, it is an absolute bargain.

No facilities for children so probably wouldn't suit if you needed to stay on-site for any length of time.

In Penrith, Costa's Tapas Bar (Queen Street)is a must to experience quality, authentic Spanish food with excellent, informative and friendly service.

We stayed on this site last year for the first time. So peaceful, just what we were looking for. Beautifully clean toilets & showers and welcoming friendly owners. Easy access to hook up.

The site overall is extremely well cared for by the owners and a credit to their hard work.

Easy to find site, 5 min. Stroll into village, great bus service to Penrith and surrounding areas. Friendly pub. Some lovely walks nearby and of course ideal area for sightseeing.

We have just booked again for this year and really looking forward to a few days relaxation.

Welcomed by the owner, was shown to area of pitches and left to pick which one we wanted. Was pouring down with rain, ground sodden and we got stuck! Lovely hardstanding with good view. Site is situated adjacent to the West Coast Main Line which for us was not a problem but some might twist. Lovely clean facilities a little dated perhaps but none the less lovely. Within easy walking distance of the town with plenty of good quality shops and a chip shop within five minutes walk down the hill. Garage at the end of the drive which is also an off licence if you run out of the essential beer! Loads of cycling and walking opportunities. Recommended to us by a friend. Would definitely recommend ourselves.

We have been going to Mr and Mrs Atkinson's site for years

Always very helpful to make your stay easy and stress free

The site is near all shops in penrith which cater for everyone and Penrith is so central for all types of holiday and good transport facilities for all

Train station bus station etc

And is a great night stop coming and going to Scotland

The toilets are very basic but always clean and tidy

Prices per night very reasonable

Site has always been dry good access to all pitches

This was our first visit to this campsite, and we used it as a stop off to scotland. We only stayed one night it was quite close to the railway but this didn't bother us at all. Its very close to the motorway and also right in the town so this was both great points for us.
The toilets and showers were excellent very clean and some tourist information provided as well. The lady owner was very helpful and let us choose were to park. Overall this was a good campsite and quiet.
There was two adults in our group and we paid £12.00 for the night which I thought was excellent this was also with electric hookup. No play area for kids but I'm sure there's plenty of things in the area for kids.
