We came here on the off chance after seeing the brown sign for a caravan and camp site and tried our luck. We required EHU so were restricted to our position as there are only two EHU's on the whole site. If you don't require EHU, you have a much wider choice of pitches.
The site is on a slope, so is awkward for a tent, but pitched the right way can be ok. The EHU is by the road leading down to the three fishing lakes and occasional traffic passes as fisherman go to and from the lakes.
The toilet and shower block is very basic to say the least, being shared by all the fishers too. However they were functional and got me clean, job done. I would take a bag as there was no hooks in the gents showers, cannot comment on the ladies I am afraid. The toilet / showers are located at the bottom of the hill by the lakes and at night is very dark on the walk down there, so if you have a portaloo, it is well worth bringing it along.
Water point on site near the EHU point, but I am sure there are more. Could not see a chemical disposal point, but then there could be, I was not looking for one.
There are three lakes to dish and permits are available from the Three Lakes Restaurant. This is also where you pay for camping. We paid £10 per unit per night with EHU, bargain.
There are a couple of art galleries, a flower nursery, a restaurant / pub, a fishing tacle shop and a climbing wall and Zorbing centre (rolling down a hill in a giant inflatable ball) on site too. Cycling routes are available on site, but the area is quite hilly. My kids loved riding to the top of the camping field and zooming down, great fun.
There is tons of open space to fly a kit, football, etc. No play area, but who needs one with all this space.
For shops, you have Ware about 5 miles away, where you will find a Tesco and other smaller shops, everything you will need. For a larger town, Hertford is about 10 miles away with a Tesco and main shops.
Restaurants are plentiful in both Ware and Hertford, as are canals for nice strolls / cycles along the tow path.
Occasional road noise but this was mainly at night when the air was much stiller.
I will use this site again as a local weekender and is a good site if you want very basic, back to nature camping. If you want all singing, all dancing, then this is not for you.
