I appreciate our visit was over Bank Holiday Weekend - a busy time - but I can only agree on the whole with previous reviewers - that the site has some lovely features but could just do with being cleaner and more maintained all round.
Many people clearly had no idea what the mop in the shower block was for and I had to distract my children from reading the rather lewd graffiti on toilet walls!
The setting was nice - pretty fishing lakes - although we inevitably got rather muddy. Because our pitch was near the paddock entrance our car got completely splatted with mud from other drivers zooming past.
Slightly too far to walk into Calne, but good town-centre Sainsbury's and market there. Easy site to find - well-signposted. Disappointed that we couldn't use Leisure Centre - couldn't even pay a visitor's rate or buy a temporary membership, so drove to Calne Community Swimming Pool instead.

We have now used this camp site a few times and have found it overall, great value for money.
The facilities are all good. Plenty of toilets and showers within a log cabin style centre. There is adequate washing up areas and are well lit.
There is a large children's area and it's possible to pitch close to this, making it great for the kids.
The pitches themselves are nice and flat, and cared for.
There are also a couple of fishing lakes with ducks for the kids to feed.
So, overall, a very good site, with good facilities and welcoming atmosphere.
Would definitely recommend for value for money!

Very overpriced for the state of the facilities. I wouldn't recommend it if you have children. We have stayed on this campsite for several years now and we are on first name terms with the huge ugly spiders that lurk in the grubby shower block, which very often doesn't have any hot water. Obviously the place hasn't had a refurb. Or deep clean since we started coming, hence this year we have found another cheaper and cleaner site in the area to stay on. The camp fields are lovely, but all the facilities including the hook-ups for the electric leave a lot to be desired.

Booked this site for it's location, and for that reason it was a good site. However, the shower and toilet facilities are not very good. I don't think if we had children with us I would have been very keen to use the showers, there is no temp control and neither toilets or showers were kept very clean, they are also unisex which you don't know until you go in. I feel this was where the site let itself down the most.
The lakes were really just large ponds, and at weekends were quite busy. Even though on our booking form it gave a pitch number, we were told to pitch wherever we liked, a lot of pitches had been reserved though and are quite varying in size. Overall, expensive for the facilities.

Stayed here for just one night with three of my boys (11, 5 & 2) in order to test out our first family tent. We only live around the corner (literally)so we know the site well. We were located adjacent to a large field of cows and that was the only noise we heard during the late evening and night.
Didn't see any of the staff during our stay, but then we weren't around for long. Sadly the showers were not working properly while we were there and a cold wash just didn't seem like a good idea. They are also not quite as clean as I would have liked, perhaps a little updating would be an idea.
A very nicely maintained site otherwise with plenty of space for the kids to run around and play. With Calne itself just a mile or so away, it is close to local shops (inc Sainsbury's) and there are some very nice pubs nearby, but do go into town for those. Ideally placed for the Cherhill White Horse and Avebury stones, it is a nice base and a pleasant friendly site.
It was our first camping trip (My wife was at home with our 7wk old who doesn't sleep through the night yet and we were being considerate) and the kids and I are definitely hooked.
Regrettably I don't think we will go back, but only because it is so close to home and we want to explore further afield.

We booked in for 2 nights over the Easter weekend and were blessed with beautiful weather.
We arrived at noon and checked in at reception - staff were very friendly and helpful - we were given a map advising we could pitch anywhere and advised the best paddocks with spaces.
Having 3 young children with us, we opted for the paddock next to the play area - there was masses of space, although the family next to us had one caravan and one tent but had awkwardly set up cutting off two electric hook up points in addition to the two they were using. Not a major problem however, as there were still several EHU points free without us having to pitch too close to anyone else.
The site is beautiful - several small fishing lakes which seemed to be popular, although I understand there were more tiddlers than anything to brag about! There is a trail around the site which is perfect for a stroll or a jog and gives you the opportunity to view the different areas. Grass was lush and green and relatively short, although it will need a mow again very soon. Rubbish was emptied regularly and there were dog foul bins aplenty.
The children's play area was a good size with lots for young and older children to do. From our tent we had a perfect view which meant we could let the kids off the leash a bit without worrying.
The facilities weren't brilliant, but we have seen worse! The wooden block near to the lakes was old and very spidery (HUGE beasts!), and there was a bit of a problem with blocked loos throughout the stay. The second block which is brick built and next to the main entrance fared a bit better, but seemed to be undergoing some sort of maintenance and was not really accessible whenever we went there.
There is a small shop on site, stocking larder and camping accessories and the coldest fridge of alcohol! Prices were extremely reasonable - no major mark ups on any item.
We spent a bit of time in nearby Devizes, which is a beautiful market town - a must see is Caen Locks - a chain of many locks taking you down a steep hill and quite a spectacular sight.
I would definitely recommend this site and we will return there again I am sure.

We stayed at Blacklands for about 8 weekends last year, and I must admit now that it is only 5 miles from my home, so with a young family it gave us a break away. But not to far in case on an emergency !
However if your coming from further away, it is perfectly located for visiting Bath, Avebury, Stonehenge etc. Even Longleat is only an hour away.
We find the site excellent for a short break, lovely sized pitches, plently of hook-ups for these who need, and water pipes with in a couple on mins walk.
The site is split into a few paddocks, and mixing caravans, motorhomes and tents together, but it works and makes for a lovely atmosphere.
If your looking for something loud and lively, this isn't for you. It's great for families, as there is a small play area, woodland walking area (also good for dogs), and a small shop which sells the essentials.
The site owners are very helpful, and whilst the toilets / wash areas are not the most modern, they are generally quite clean. The showers can go a bit cold when its busy !
The only point I would add, is if you have small children, you need to keep an eye on them, as there are lovely fishing lakes (which I believe are well stocked), but these are not fenced off. And my kids were very fascinated by them.

Visited for two nights as a base for visiting Avebury. Very few facilities were open, the drinking water standpipes were switched off. Swimming pool is not open to visitors staying less than a week. Toilets /washrooms were in very poor condition, on the first day, slightly better the second day. Seems to be more of a permanent residents park in the winter months. Despite notices to the contrary, many residents were letting their dogs roam free. At £32 for two nights, this was bad value.

Wanted a site near to Avebury and found Blackland lakes. A lovely site and had a good choice of where to park. They have a field which is away from the children's play area where we stayed. The site was not over crowded and even if you are not into fishing, walking around the lakes was lovely and peaceful.
The toilet were very clean and well stocked and the shower's are the best I have seen at a campsite, very powerful. They even had facilities to use a hair dryer in the laundry room. We stayed for two nights at a very reasonable cost of £30.00, not bad for high season. Some of the showers were broken but they soon had plumbers into repair them.
I would highly recommend this site for families as well as couple's wanting to relax and even if you are not into fishing the surroundings are beautiful.
The campsite shop was well stocked and staff very friendly. I hope to visit again next year.

Had two nights on this site back in May 2010 with borrowed kit, and enjoyed it enough that we went and got our own kit. This return trip (3 nights over a weekend) was to christen our stuff ready for another trip elsewhere in September.
We found the site to be perfectly adequate for our needs as a family with two small children. It is a big site and on the Saturday night it was getting towards full in terms of pitches taken up. However despite that, there seemed to be no pressure on the larger facilities block nearest us - no waiting for showers, toilets or washing up sinks. The water temperature on the showers can be 'interesting' as previously stated - I think if the washing up sinks are being filled it takes the hot water away from the showers as the pressure drops and they go cold. So showering outside meal times is probably wise! Seemed reasonably clean given the traffic levels although perhaps the higher parts of the building could do with some cobweb removal - didn't bother us as we expect some interaction with nature when camping!
Shop/office hours can be a bit erratic but if arriving when closed for lunch/evening there is usually a mobile number on the door to phone, and they will direct you to a numbered field to pitch in. Staff were very pleasant and helpful, providing directions to shops etc. Sainsbury's in Calne is good for stocking up beyond the basics in the camp shop. Freezer blocks can be frozen in the shop freezer for 10p per block.
Be slightly wary of pitching on the right hand side of field 6 (as you drive in) as the far end of this backs on to the fishing lake. It took us a while to work out what the alarm clock style bleeps were in the middle of the first night - its the rod alarms used by overnight fishermen! (The owl 'fight' in the tree above us whilst equally sleep disturbing was at least worth being woken for!).
This time we were in field 9 which is nearer the playground which suited us with the kids as we could sit by the tent and still see them. Playground is showing a few signs of age but still seems safe enough. Our kids managed to entertain themselves with others from nearby tents for the weekend.
In general we enjoyed the site - there are a few little detail things that are showing a bit of wear and maybe should be on this winters maintenance list but overall it was fine for us (although as yet we've nothing to compare it to)
