 Rather reluctant to say how much we love Houghton Mill, because we don't want it to be fully booked when we return.
Of all the sites we have visited over the years, this is the one we come back to, time & again. If the only thing you can gripe about is the fact that the central heating in the shower block is a little fierce, then they must be doing something right.
Staff very friendly, and sweetly remembered us from our last visit. The location is superb, and our dog loves the river - he learnt to swim here 4 years ago.
As far as pubs are concerned, look no further than a gentle 2 mile walk through the meadows to the Cock at Hemmingford Grey - a little pricey, but great food, guest beers and attentive staff.
We'll be back before the year is out. Oh, and I'm only 48, so not retired yet!

Nice area with river views, walks, cycling, boating & mill etc. Entrance to site is 'fun' when caravans are arriving / leaving as its a tight turn & narrow so don't assume you can get in / out any time. Pub in village disappointing food but good beer.
Good grass / pitches & very well maintained.
Loos / facilities etc very good if long way from tent areas & only 3 off showers for ~40 pitches so I became the unwashed.
Nothing much for kids to do, no playground so they continually get told off for being kids & generating their own fun - maybe the site would be better as OAP / retired only?
Dogs accepted & tolerated more than kids.
Wardens helpful & friendly when things are ok, but rather lacking people skills when not or post 9pm if noisy!

Do not arrive before 1300hrs so as to allow departing units to go through narrow entry / exit road! Common sense prevails.
Site a little lumpy but easy to level off. Satellite users beware plenty of beautiful trees to block Astra 2.
Time your ablutions to the tee as there is only three for each sex but are to usual CC standard of cleanliness, it will help if you can play the picalo quickly as the showers are of the push button type but are superbly refreshingly hot.
The village has two ok pubs & a mini supermarket where you can purchase daily provisions,newspapers & that all important lottery ticket.
Cycling to ok Huntingdon & more picturesque Godmanchester & St Ives is easy. But treat yourself to a walk or bike ride to Hemingford Abbots & Hemingford Grey,this is lottery ticket world both have lovely old style English pubs.
This site will suit all. Enjoy we did & will return!

Well, I am currently on site and using the magic 3 dongle to bring you this, great stuff, although I am in the awning as the signal is too weak inside the caravan.
This is a lovely site, all grass and a bit lumpy, but well drained and decent sized pitches, we are currently on number 13 and despite the Easter Bank Holiday weather there is enough to do around here. The walking is great, we have walked from the site into both St Ives and Huntingdon and got the bus back to Houghton easily enough.
The wardens have been friendly and helpful and the facilities are spotless.
If I were to have a grumble it would be about the showers which are the push button type and you have to hit the button about 50 times to get a shower, but hey its only a small gripe.
Not sure how easy its going to be to get the van through the narrow road and corner on a Bank Holiday Monday but that's tomorrows problem.
A great place for a small break, the local pubs are good, the Oliver Cromwell pub in St Ives is the best pub for miles, recommended.

Visited here soon after it opened for this years season.
Facilities remain good, site was not quite full and never any queues for showers etc. Very clean. Other facilities limited in scope (is only a small site) to a laundry and information room etc, but everything for a few days stay that you might need. Site office sells basic essentials but shop in village will cover most other eventualities. Tesco at Huntingdon a few minutes drive. No play area for children but meadows at back of site allow space.
Well kept site, tidy, good weather showed off the greenness. Site is undulating in places but it is possible to get level on most of the pitches with minimal effort, pitches are a decent size.
Excellent walks and cycling locally. Good frequent bus service to local towns. For Cambridge, probably better to drive there and use park and ride rather than bus from Houghton (long journey at over an hour).
Agree about the access and the need to be cautious when arriving and leaving, longer outfits can make the turn but with care.
Dont arrive before 1 pm as wardens not keen to allow booking in before this time (which is entirely reasonable).

Just returned from a week at this site, our first visit, and unlikely to be our last.
We pitched in the `centre circle` which was our choice as the pitch was huge and despite being in the middle we weren`t overlooked by anyone, also you could pitch at 90degrees to the pitch marker which made the pitch even larger. This area of the site is undulating but hardly problematical, although I will concede I`ve never been on a CC site where the grass on the pitches was so long.
The toilet block was O.K, but with the number of tents on site the facilities were overstretched at times with queues for the (3 men, 3 women) showers. It was easier to use the shower in the van than queue.
Two pubs within easy strolling distance, but the Three Jolly Butchers is the better of the two, with a decent menu and a good selection of quality hand-pulled beers (Hancocks XB, Old Speckled Hen, Abbot Ale amongst others) on tap.
Decent shop in the village, sells most things and is very clean with quality fruit and veg.
Lots of walking potential with circular routes to be had if you don`t wish to drive.
We found the wardens very helpful, despite them having to put up with the numerous caravanners who are unable to grasp the meaning of 'do not arrive before 1 p.M', and then whinging when they weren`t allowed on site. The entrance is both blind and tight, and if outfits meet at this point difficulties are inevitable, hence the simple (but ignored) request.
The watermill is typical N.T, the tearooms do the best scones I`ve tasted (wholewheat flour ground by the watermill, which you can buy, along with a recipe sheet), and there are boats for hire if you fancy exploring the Great Ouse a little more.
We left on the Saturday morning, shortly after getting our bacon & egg baps and raiding the home-made cake-stall (all done to raise funds for the Xmas lights) from under the thatched -roof central clock tower.
A nice lasting impression of life in a nice village.
Well recommended.

Finally managed to book a few days at this site and found it a lovely place to stay. Right on the river, nice walks, pub and shop in the village minutes away.
The site facilities are up to the Caravan Club standard - just.Basic but clean toilet/showers that need a key - the drawback is that there is only one key per unit which proved a problem once or twice.
This is a busy site and the wardens like to cut the grass before you pitch, so there is a lot of grass cutting going on all day. They are not too flexible on staying over an hour or two, we thought we'd ask because we'd seen people leaving quite late the previous day, but were told they were too busy. Fair enough, but there are regulars who are familiar with the site and manage to get the pitches they want and leave when they want.
Our final complaint was that each unit is issued with only one facilities key, which is a bit annoying when your husband has gone fishing with it in his pocket!
There are no dog poo bins on site, but great places to walk dogs around the area. The area gets very busy at the weekend as it is a National Trust property and very popular as a day out. Pitches are a bit unlevel but not too much of a problem - no hardstanding at all. Will be booking again for next year, probably mid week though.

We would concur that this is a standard CC site, but were also annoyed that you can't reserve a pitch, yet find that other parties have laid claim to pitches for their friends.
The staff though were kind and helpful to us, but he does have a thing about the mower! It may be that as the land is rented off the National Trust, they have an agreement about the how the grass is maintained.
We were in the area for family reasons only. It isn't a site we would choose otherwise. It seems to be mainly used by retired people local to the area and is clearly very popular with them.
Pitches are somewhat uneven. The perimeter pitches are the best, but of course, these were already taken. Otherwise you just choose a pitch in the inner circle which is the most uneven ground. TV reception adequate- just. Childrens noise and behaviour wasn't a problem, there weren't any, but there were partying and very noisy adults. But by 12:30 it was quiet, so no real problem.

Well, the last post on here is from me, here's an update. We understand that the wardens have changed and, oh, how the site has changed.
Although we booked this June weekend in early Dec 07 we still couldn't get the pitch we requested. Various pitches around the site were earmarked by lounger chairs and incredibly the chairs were all part of a set! we assumed they belonged to the wardens and were reserved for certain chosen people but couldn't be sure.
Although the site was still clean and tidy the noise was a problem. A male warden was constantly buzzing around the site on his motor mower / trailer thing, back and forth time and time again. Sometimes he only had one black sack on the back! Then as people moved he was buzzing the pitch to cut the grass which is fine but not to that degree, I don't think he was cutting anything off at all and he was an absolute pain.
At 10.15pm on the Saturday night youngsters were playing in the dark alongside the river and around the extremely fast flowing water going into the mill, screaming and shouting at the top of their voices. On the Sunday we were treated to the water fight because the sun was shining. Not just water bombs, beakers of water, water guns, but BUCKETS of water were being thrown around - you cannot imagine the racket. The kids were wearing swimsuits and were comandeering the water tap for most of the morning. A warden came along and I felt sure he was coming to ask them to calm it down but I was wrong. He waited his turn behind the kids to fill his watering can and walked off to water his plants!
To add insult to injury Madame Warden was walking around the site looking at her wristwatch at about 11.50am. And she took no notice either.
Its a shame, a real shame. The subject of unruly children is covered ad nauseum on the Practical Caravan Forum, its about time the Caravan Club sat up and listened to the views of the people.

We managed to get a pitch here by accessing late availability on the Caravan Club website - we had been wanting to go for ages but the site, as with many others with the Caravan Club, is constantly full.
On arrival we wondered what all the fuss was about, small site, undulating grass, nothing special. Cost us £29.00 for two nights with electric hook up which we didn't think was bad. At the present time the Mill is hidden behind scaffolding and green netting which detracted from the scenery but the site is well kept and the showers and toilets are very clean.
Out of the front gate there is a short scenic walk to the square which takes you past a beautiful 13th century church and thatched cottages which have the most stunning aray of Autumn leaves and late summer flowers at this time.
There is a pub called the three horseshoes in the square and a short walk further on is the Three Jolly Butchers. We spoke to regulars at the site and were told that the Three Jolly Butchers is the best place to eat but be sure to book - we couldn't get a meal there or in the other pub mentioned. Instead we drove out to the nearby Mill Pub/Restaurant which is sort of a Family eaterie but was nothing to write home about.
St. Ives is nearby (you can walk if you're fit enough and a bus services comes back to the square if you're not). Very quaint, some cute, old fashioned little shops and a market affair on Saturdays (try the pork & leek sausages!) We would go back because we felt there was so much we didn't see in the area. Lots of great walks if you have a dog. In essence, the location makes it, not the site itself.
