We camped at Lee Valley Hoddesdon Weir site on the May Bank Holiday weekend 2006. The campsite has 3/4 non-electric tent pitches on the river edge, but there are no designated pitch areas, so we had to camp in the middle of the field, therefore the river view was obscured. There had been a lot of rain, so quite boggy underfoot. The campsite facilities are basic but very good, heated shower block, cleanish toilet block, laundry and dish-washing facilities. The reception come shop has all the essentials. The staff are really lovely, and very helpful with advice and tips on how to make the most of your stay. The surrounding area is very pleasant, the pub is just across the weir and serves great food and drinks all day, Sainsbury's is nearby. There are some lovely walks along the canals, you can hire bikes and boats etc. The Lee valley area is vast so you won't get bored. Three disadvantages; there is a refrigerated lorry depot behind the site so you can hear the engines running non-stop, and the site was really noisy - people (music and shouting) celebrating until the early hours, lastly no designated pitches so the kids football always being kicked near / on the cars and tent.

My Girlfriend and I experienced our first camping experience here. I arrived on the Saturday and booked very easily. As a novice I struggled to get the tent peg's in due to hard ground, but put that down to not knowing better, or having cheap pegs. That evening we went to the Fish and Eel pub and had a terrible experience. Waited over 1 hour 30 minutes for a meal that awful, was informed this was due to staff sickness, but didn't impress. We were leaving early the next morning to attend the London Marathon, and it was raining, however the toilets were spotless, the showers were hot, in fact to hot. When we left there was someone in the reception that waved us goodbye, it made us want to camp here again. From a personal point of view despite bad service in a pub, the rain. My girlfriend and I are spending my impending birthday money on a tent. We've caught the bug and hope to add more reviews in the future.

A lovely campsite set about 5 minutes drive out of Hoddesdon Town Centre, although when you approach you come through an industrial estate, once on the site you don't even notice it, it is set far enough back from the road to avoid noise etc.
A friendly reception was had here with a small shop selling the bare basics, milk, bread etc. They also had a display of leaflets for local activities.
Barrier guarded site itself, which is great for security, gets locked over night so if arriving back late after a night out, park in the holding car park and walk over to your unit.
The site is spacious and flat with the hookup points running around the edge. There are plenty of bins, fresh water and elsan points on the site.
The facilities block is key code guarded and in a good state of cleanliness, there was washing up points and also a laundry with washing lines for you to hang out your clothes on!
The site is about a two minute walk from Dobbs Weir and nestles close to the canal, which makes for great walking and cycling (all the way into London should you wish to!)
Across the road is the Fish and Eels pub serving food and drink, kids are only allowed in here until 9pm though, but has a lovely patio / garden looking out over the canal and the boats.
Also across the road is a great little cafe serving all day breakfasts, lunches, hot and cold snacks and more. Great value and came here both mornings!
Close proximity to Hoddesdon where you will find a massive Sainsbury's and a town full of the usual shops and pubs.
London is close by with not far to travel to hop on a tube and take in a day trip.
Would I come back, yes I have already been three times and will continue to visit. Dogs are welcome on site.

19th-21st August 2003 Just returned from a two day stay here. The couple running the site were friendly & helpful. The entire site was extremely well maintained. Showers, washing up facilities & toilets were all spotless with plenty of hot water.(20p hairdryer available) Only pitfall was the NOISE!!- we unwittingly erected our tent near the hedge at the far end of the site, only to discover we backed onto the county re-cycling centre. They start just before 6am & don't stop all day. Smashing glass bottles hurtling from a skip at 5 50am is not the gentlest awakening!! Also very close to the railway and main road. All that said, we still managed to enjoy our stay.

Dobb's Weir is a quieter site with no clubhouse and the railway is not a problem. The toilets and showers are very clean and campers are given a key to enter them. The nearest pub The Fish and Eeels is just across the road close to the weir and they serve good cheap meals but be sure to book for Fri/Sat/Sun as it is very popular. There is a small childrens play area inside the pub and quite a good one outside. You would have to watch small children all the time as there is a river alongside the site and the weir is opposite the site.

Just to update, the Fish & Eels pub has been refurbished and no longer has any facilities for children but is still a lovely place to sit by the weir.

Easiest approach is via the A10, leaving at the Hoddesdon junction. The site is on the edge of an industrial estate, but don't let that put you off, it's well screened. Site is mostly flat with just a few gentle undulations.
Facilities - tiny shop (very limited stock). Good shower/toilet block. Small adventure playground. There are statics on site but tourers are on a separate area. Tents are also catered for.
Fishing on the River Lee is literally only yards away. There's a pub 'The Fish & Eels' at the actual Dobbs Weir, it's about 100 yards from the site entrance and does food. You can eat indoors or on the terrace overlooking the Weir (nice on a summer's evening).
We use this site a lot and have never found it to be noisy, even when full. It's ideally situated for a quick caravan 'fix' at the weekend if you live in London. The site staff are friendly and helpful. Nearby Hoddesdon (about 1 mile) has two supermarkets. On-site storage (in a compound) may be available.
