This is an excellent site right by the side of Hoe mill lock on the delightfully rural Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, which was saved about ten years ago from closure by the charity the Inland Waterways Association setting up a subsidiary charity, Essex Waterways Limited (EWL) which is largely supported and maintained by their volunteers and those of the Waterway Recovery Group, which (including myself) assist a very small enthusiastic team of paid staff.
Details of all of these can be found on their web site
The site has now electric hook ups which it didn't have originally, and a very clean small toilet block. Lots of very secluded walks all along the 13 mile towpath from Chelmsford, via Maldon to Heybridge basin where there are two good pubs and a tea room right by the Sea lock, with wonderful views over the Blackwater estuary and it's associated wildlife with many wading birds.
There is also a kiosk on the towpath there run by EWL selling drinks and snacks and you can take one of the EWL trip boats for a short cruise along the navigation from the kiosk to Beeleigh weir and Lock, a pleasant spot where there is a mill and abbey.
At Paper mill lock there is a large tea room and EWL run their larger trip boat the Victoria from there. EWL have there office there where you can purchase a licence to take your craft on the river.
Note the British Canoeing Licence does not cover you for navigating this river. There is a paddle boarding school and you can hire canoes from EWL at Paper Mill lock.
It should be noted that during flood conditions the camp site is not open due to it being beside the river and can get waterlogged, but it is normally dry.

What an excellent campsite. Spotless and well cared for site.
The helpfulness of site manager was above and beyond.
With plenty of walks and boat trips we had lots to do. Including kayaking
We will be back

Great location for visiting Danbury, Little Baddow, Maldon, Heybridge etc.
The site is well-maintained, and has easy access to towpath walks. Although we were pitched just the other side of the hedge from the road, we didn't find the traffic noise obtrusive.
We didn't use the 'facilities', so can't comment on the quality, but it's good that they're provided.

Small site with level grass pitches with 16a electric hook ups.
There is one WC, and a single kitchen sink unit that is unfortunately located with the WC, so not ideal for washing up.
The site is next to a working lock on the Chelmer and Blackwater navigation, canoe licences are required and are available to purchase on site and on line.
A nice pub the Queen Victoria is located one mile away in Woodham Walter, they do good food eat in or take away. Nice waterside location but marred by the storage of timber and building materials next to the pitches which is unsightly.
The the excellent staff are friendly and professional.
The cost is £18 per night.

This is a lovely small friendly site next to the lock with excellent towpath walks from the site.
The heated toilet room was spotless. One word of warning - the approach from the south is restricted by a 6 ft 6 inch width limit - and there is no leeway! Approach only from the north.
We will certainly consider using the site again.
Beware deep water etc if coming with young children.

What a lovely site right on the canal lock. Facilities were very clean as was the site. Great walks along the canal and a pub serving food a 15 min walk away. Laura the warden was very nice and informative about the site and lived on Willow a canal barge.

Lovely site - right next to the water and surrounded by lovely walks. We cycled to Maldon - quite a stretch as we went along the river path but perhaps we should have taken the road. Maldon waterfront is lovely with some nice pubs. Site owners are very pleasant and helpful and the facilities (small building with a loo and washing-up basin) are clean. Power to all pitches and the site is flat. We'll definitely go back.

Small site bordered by a quiet road and the River Chelmer at the site of Hoe Mill Lock. The entrance is gated and shared with a few moored boats. A single toilet and kitchen sink with hot & cold water. Very clean. Water and chemical toilet and recycling facilities.
Check details for electric hook up as we didn't require this.
Everyone we met was very nice and helpful.
The river is a great spot for canoeing and swimming, walking a bird watching. Lots of green woodpeckers about & we had a tranquil two days, would definitely return.
No shops nearby. Small children would need supervision as river very nearby.

Stayed here for a girls weekend away and it was a very relaxing place to stay.
Despite the weather we had a lovely time with a walk along the river to the tea shop by the next lock and a visit to Danbury for a very nice meal meal at the cricketers.
The site managers could not be more helpful and friendly.
Brilliant value at £5 per adult per night.
For those interested there are a number of geocaches hidden along the river.
