Having decided to make the most of the great weather we’ve been enjoying I logged onto UKCampsite to find a site in South West Scotland that had the basic facilities - water, toilets, showers, etc. - and allowed campfires. Kings Green Caravan Park in Port William appeared to fit the bill exactly!
As it was a ‘last minute’ booking I reserved a pitch through their own website which was pretty easy. I still managed to book in as a caravan rather than a tent. That was quickly resolved with a phone call and email with the super helpful staff though I suspect it wouldn’t have been a problem anyway, such is the relaxed nature of this community enterprise.
The site is right next to the Luce Bay shoreline - great for sunsets! - and the pitches are flat and sandy with some cobbles below the surface which could make pegging out difficult. Forewarned of this on their website, I brought a mallet but it wasn’t needed. I was the only tent on site along with a dozen or so motorhomes and a couple of caravans. As I was in a tent I had a beach side pitch which was fantastic, my nearest neighbours were at least 50 metres away.
The cost per night was £16 (£22 if you want electric) which is more than reasonable these days, especially as the showers and other facilities are free to use. The reception isn’t manned all day; it is a community social enterprise after all, but it is open for campers to spend time in and has comfy seating, a few books and a fridge freezer which is, again, free to use. This inside area real bonus, particularly for those of us in tents, if the weather’s cold or wet. Site staff were super friendly and very helpful.
As it happens I didn’t have the time, or feel the need, for a campfire which is just as well because they are not allowed! However, you can hire a fire pit (£5) though or bring your own. Kindling and wood is available from the Spar in the village, a 5 minute walk.
The Whithorn peninsula is a fascinating place with lots of interesting archeology and Kings Green Caravan Park is an ideal location from which to explore the area.
All in all it’s a super site, it has everything I look for in a campsite - no frills, absolutely fantastic location, quiet on site and space to breathe. I intend to revisit in high season to see if the village has come ‘alive’ and I’ll definitely be back outside of high season better prepared to rustle up a better evening meal!
A site shop selling essential groceries would be a great addition to the facilities on offer.
The only negative is nothing to do with the site so I haven’t let it affect my star ratings. Port William is a very small seaside village. In early June there was nowhere in the village to eat in the evening. No restaurants, cafés or pubs were open, there isn’t even a chippy. I bought some supplies from the Spar shop so all was good and I suspect that in the school holiday season things might be different. There are a couple of cafés in the village that open during the day - Tasty Bites (another community enterprise I understand) do a lovely bacon buttie!

What a beautiful quiet site, apart from early morning passing traffic, but did not spoil my holiday,
This was our first visit to this site, we will be back just for the view of the sea from our caravan,
10 out of 10 very basic buts got everything you need.

Loved this campsite.
On the edge of Port William which has a Spa shop and community run cafe it overlooks the sea and has very clean facilities.
The campsite is community run and has thoughtful touches like the small lounge area with books to borrow where tent campers could take refuge in bad weather.
All for £18 per night which includes electric hook up and use of facilities.
Would definitely recommend.

In a great location for walkers,
The site was well-organised and well-maintained, and we thoroughly enjoyed our three sunny days there.
If camping, ask for a pitch down by the brook.

Lovely site next to a shingle beach overlooking the Mull of Galloway.
Very well kept with a good range of facilities at an extremely good price, only £17 per night with electric hook up.
The centre of Port William is just a short stroll away with shops and a nice cafe at the harbour.
Family friendly site next to a children's playground.
I would highly recommend King's Green if you are looking for somewhere to stay in this beautiful area of Scotland.

What a wonderful site, the staff were so helpful from the booking process and arrival on the site.
The site is predominately flat with most pitches with only a gentle slope on them, all pitches are grass with no hard standing however the ground is a little hard when pegging an awning but well drained.
There were still some minor Covid 19 restrictions at the time of our visit with only one family able to use the toilet facilities at any time, toilets were clean and tidy.
The views from the site are outstanding and the site offers exceptional value. I'm sure we will return.
