Field with portaloos.
Basic site, mostly sloping field but a few flat spots.
Lovely views over the lake, much quieter than the other sites that you may pass to get to this one.
Basic but OK for a one-night stop-over.
Owner quite friendly.
Cheap.

The site is in a lovely location near Ullswater on the road from Pooley Bridge to Howton. Coming from Pooley Bridge, it is next on the road after Park Foot and Waterside. These other two resorts were bulging at the seams and on Saturday night walking past them they were buzzing like a music festival!
Cross Dormont was a lot quieter and we went in without any bookings. The owner was perfectly civil. The site is on a slope and is 95% tents. It was fairly quiet the first night but a bit livelier on Saturday. A really nice location. As said before the toilet and washing facilities are poor. Big queues for showers, as there is only one. The blocks were pretty filthy. £16pn for a 3 berth tent (even though there were obly 2 of us!)
Might go back, not bad but hardly brilliant.

Just come back from spending 3 nights at Cross Dormont over the August 2009 bank holiday.
This very basic site is fine for off-season stays.
It has:
- two cramped washing up sinks with one warm water tap to share
- a single gents loo and shower
- two ladies loos and a shower
(for the bank holiday six portaloos had been hired in and spread in pairs around the field)
This was to cope with around a 100 tents probably 300 people - think about it !
Costs - £25/night for a family tent
Quite a few noisy groups laughing late into the night Saturday and Sunday.
Portaloos left to the users untouched by cleaners over the weekend - not pretty
In summary nice location let down by too many people for the facilities. Shame really.

Just been to Cross Dormont for the weekend with a group of adults and children. We found the site relatively very quiet over the bank holiday weekend, and were able to choose our own pitches. The number of units that could camp in the field would be limited by the amount of flat ground, as much of it would be too sloping to be of use. Views from the site are fantastic and the lake is just at the bottom of the camping field, across a small road. The kids loved the site and enjoyed foraging along a stream for firewood and playing on the tree swing.
This site is generally quiet - until 6am when the owner lets her three little dogs out to run around the camping field, yapping incessantly and waking everyone up. Like most Lake District sites, it is expensive and we were disappointed to find that the facilities did not reflect this, being very basic indeed. Worst of all, the shower costs 50p, the coin slot is outside the shower and the light in the shower doesn't come on until you start paying.

Just got back from Bank Holiday Weekend at Cross Dormont. Two families visited, we left booking late and it proved the only site available.
Previous reviews covered the facilities which as stated are very basic, but the site is a gem with great views over Ullswater and surrounding hills. Even at night looking across the lake and valley is magical.
You should have no problems finding a pitch if you have a smaller tent however there is only a limited amount of flat space suitable for larger/frame tents.
The site was relatively peaceful and any noise did cease as the evening wore on, but the biggest bonus is that it feels much more remote/private than other local sites such as Waterside House which has a busy walking route through it and Park Foot which can become very busy at times. (These site do however provide reasonable shops where you can buy essentials).
Overall the site is well recommended and I would visit again.

Just back from 2 nights stay, site is great if you want views of ulswater, the owner just lets you pick where you want to pitch.20 pounds a night for 3 adults and 1 child. You must visit pooley bridge about 2 mile walk.
Only down side is the toilets and showers,if you pitch at the bottom field its a hike to the toilets which are very basic.
The owner doesn't stand for any nonsense,he removed a few unruly groups.Ideal for families, there is a field just across the road which leads to the lake side, take a chair and a drink, just sit there and forget your troubles.
Will be visiting again but pitching on the top field

Location lovely, overlooking the lake, nice atmosphere. Stayed on bank holiday weekend and did not feel overcrowded. Disappointed with the shower/toilet block as only one shower and two toilets, I also felt they were not kept very clean, too many people using too few facilities. Also disappointed with wash up facilities of two sinks with a small hot water tank being the only hot water for both sinks, again not kept very clean.

August 2003 This is one of several campsites on the same road. We chose this site because its facilities were basic and we hoped it would be quieter than the others. This turned out to be the case, with the other sites looking very busy and Cross Dormont relatively quiet.
The website describes a lakeside setting - the camping fields are actually about 300 yards up the hillside. The owner does have a field which borders the lake, but planning restrictions mean that this can't be used for camping. It is a lovely place for a picnic though.
Pitches were informal - there's the fields, pitch where you want touch. Most of the site is gently sloping. The cost for the four of us in a large family tent was £12 a night. The showers were good (20p cost). There is one shower and two ladies toilets, with the gent's facilities not much larger. Dishwashing sinks had a hot tap, but if you look under the sink it is connected to the cold supply so don't waste your time waiting for it to get hot like I did!
On our second night we were kept awake until 5am by a noisy group (fortunately our 2 and 3 year olds slept through it). To give the owners credit, they told the party to leave the next day and said that they don't tolerate bad behaviour.
A definite choice if you don't want a Butlin's type campsite.
