We really enjoyed our stay at Smithson Farm over the Easter holidays. Carole was so lovely and very efficient when we phoned to book. Harry was there to greet us when we arrived and to show us the facilities and the on-site mining museum.

A massive, massive thanks to Carole, Harry and Richard for their help in getting our camper awning tent erected. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without their experience and expertise.

It was very dog friendly andJake our dog met some new doggy buddies. He wants to thank Findlay for sharing his bone with him.

The site was quiet with lots nice dog walks close by. The Pendle and Brontë Ways are within walking distance as is a lovely small Woodland Trust woods and the Leeds Liverpool Canal towpath.

We drove the short distance to Barley twice during our stay to hike the witches trail and Pendle Hill.

Carole, Harry and their lovely dogs go out of their way to make guests feel welcome and comfortable. Carole even drove my husband to a shop so that he could buy some wine on Easter Sunday.

Lovely semi rural site Harry and Carol were very obliging nothing was too much trouble for them.

2x 50p for a 4 min shower was a bit steep as I used more than 4 mins so cost me £2 per shower.

Unisex toilets didn't bother me but I was there in early Feb so the site was quiet.

Loved the fact the animals roamed freely and it didn't bother me at all.

Will return

Had a very warm welcome from Harry and Carol.

A lovely site, amenities, surrounding countryside and views. Had a wholesome cooked breakfast on site before our departure.

Cant wait to visit and stay again.

Highly recommend.

Lovely friendly owners who were very helpful. Lovely, pretty site, quiet and peaceful with lovely local walks.

Cafe for full breakfast on site if needed.

Toilets immaculate! Fantastic, interesting colliery museum on site too.

Excellent! Highly recommended.

Pleasant stay but dogs and unisex facilities would stop us from returning. Owners were lovely and attentive, but unfortunately so were their two very large dogs which, along with the hens, were allowed to roam free range throughout the site. Despite the description on ukcampsite saying dogs to be kept on a lead at all times! We have two of our own dogs so are used to them being around but we had left them at home which on reflection we were relieved about, as the campsite dogs were constantly just wandering all through our pitch (sometimes almost disappearing into the tent if we weren’t quick enough to tell them no!) and our dogs would not have taken kindly to this intrusion.

Whilst we were putting up our tent, one of said dogs decided to wee up one of our chairs. I played this down to the owner but then the next minute the same dog was on top of our (then flat) tent as my husband was putting it up. I had to ask the owner to get it off! It just seemed selfish to us. What about people who don’t have/like dogs?

Later in the afternoon I saw their other dog doing its mess at the back of the two pods on the site. As the owners weren’t around it was just left there and I didn’t want to mention it to them as I’d already had to mention the other two incidents! What about any children on the site?

On day two one of the dogs wee’d on our windbreak! Very little we could do to stop it.

There was a group of three tents with a dog and that dog was allowed to run around and go on everyone’s pitches.

I had read that the site had unisex toilets/shower block and didn’t think it would bother me but both my husband and I were very uncomfortable with it. The block was very small so it was almost inevitable that someone else would be in there every time we paid a visit, and walking in to a man in there worried me greatly. My husband took to watching carefully whenever I had to go to the block for my safety. He said he also felt very uncomfortable at the thought of there being just him and a woman he didn’t know in there.

Finally, despite ongoing COVID-19 issues, there was practically no attempt to make the site safe, just a couple of signs encouraging social distancing and a few bottles of hand sanitizer left lying around looking distinctly unhygienic.

Oh and come on! 50p for hot water to wash up??

Won’t be returning!

We stayed here in April in one of Smithson Farm's beautiful pods and were so pleased with the site we booked to bring our grandchildren camping in the tent.

As soon as we arrived we were warmly greeted and offered a tea or coffee with juice for the grandchildren.

Our pitch was flat and spacious. Everything about this site is lovely - the owners and staff are so friendly and nothing is any trouble. The cafe is great with delicious food, all served with a smile.

Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a comfortable stay with good, clean facilities and welcoming owners.

We have had a lovely, lovely time at this super friendly site. There was a warm welcome on arrival and we were settled onto our pitch with personal attention. It's a really small and cosy place so we felt at home immediately. The lovely and friendly dog came to check out the tent, quickly followed by the chickens (who know a barbecue when they see one) and eventually the turkey came round for a look. The kids loved this.

The pitch itself was flat and non-stony so the tent went up easily and the pegs went in without bother. We stayed over a VERY wet few days so I can state with confidence that the site is also v well drained.

Logistically, I would say that this site is really geared up for adults and older families. The facilities are spotless but shared between boys and girls which is quite unusual. They are entered using a special key which requires a £10 deposit. You have to reach up pretty high to unlock, it was a bit of a stretch for my 10 year old - obviously this is to ensure that young children don't go unattended.

Showers are 2x50p for 4 mins and the hot water (for washing up) is 50p a big bowl. This does sound steep but I believe that the cost per night for camping is really good value so this wasn't a problem to us.

There is a cafe on site, we used it for breakfast on our last day which was delicious.

There was one downside, which I hesitate to mention, but in the interest of balance. I think it must be quite close to a motorway or busy road because there was some road noise at night time. This was a bit of a shame because visually this is in a beautiful location, but the cars made it not possible to really imagine that you were getting away from civilisation. It's a small thing and, I think compensated for by everything else.

Overall, we were really pleased with ourselves for finding this site - it's tidy, friendly and in a lovely position. If we are visiting this area again then we would definitely go back.

We would definitely

A lovely, well maintained, friendly little site, and the cafe serving good food was a bonus. We paid a £10 for the toilet block key, which was refunded on return. The toilet block consisted of 2 toilet cubicles plus a wet room with shower, which were kept spotlessly clean.

I personally disliked the fact that the toilets were unisex with just a thin partition separating the cubicles. There was just not enough privacy for my liking and when sitting on the 'throne' I hated knowing there was a man performing his ablutions so close by.

Unfortunately our camper isn't big enough to have it's own toilet which would have been preferable on this site. I'm afraid this has put us off returning again. However, it can be recommended if you have a van with it's own facilities.
