We stayed in one of the wooden camping pods, though to be honest it was more like a small chalet. The only thing lacking was a water supply but we only had to walk about 25m to access the rather good facilities block.

Its lounge and washing up room were more "youth hostel" style than "campsite. Very impressed. We struggled to get the site wifi to work but no problem with 4G mobile phone signals.

The site was quiet as it shuts in late October so formally staffed for only a few hours a day. All the information we needed arrived in advance by email.

The adjoining leisure centre acts as the contact point if needed. The Outrun, partly filmed in Orkney, was showing whilst we were there in its modern cinema. £7 for an adult ticket.

Everywhere in Kirkwall is within walking distance. Sadly the Tourist Info looks shut down but locals very friendly & willing to answer questions.

Cathedral & town museum well worth a visit. We also caught the ferry across to Hoy for the naval Scapa Flow museum: not really one for children but well presented displays and small cafe.

The neolithic Maeshowe cairn was our only disappointment: all the tours were fully booked, maybe by the cruise ship companies??

However there are other less famous chambered tombs on the islands to visit eg Wideford Hill, just a couple of miles from the campsite.

This site is an ideal central base for exploring the mainland. Kirkwall centre is a few minutes walk away, with a full range of services. The museum deserves a special mention, as it is very good, and unexpectedly large.

The facilities on site maybe the best we have experienced in 25 years of caravaning. There are several individual shower rooms, each with a basin and WC; all with underfloor heating and a stool. Pitches are well spaced.

WiFi was ok, but there is a comfortable lounge area within the main building close to the transmitter for those sited at the extremes of the site.

We were a little unsure about staying on an urban site, but we need not have worried, as it was quiet at night and the convenience of walking into town outweighed any lact of "scenic interest".

Incidentally, this site is sheltered, which would be important during stormy weather.

Orkney Council has really pulled out the stops to make sure its council-run campsites on the main island are well set out and well run.

We stayed overnight at the Kirkwall site, which is a ten minute stroll from the centre of town. Although it’s on a main road, you have to remember, this is Orkney, where ‘rush-hour’ means you have more than 5 cars passing by.

The attendant on duty was polite enough but seemed very shy and I had to prompt him to tell me about the facilities and layout but it was the weekend and he seemed young enough for this to be a Saturday job to top up his pocket money. :)

The site is well set out and the main block has individual shower rooms complete with their our loo, mirror and sink.

The place was spotless and there was good Wi-Fi signal on our pitch, although it was quite sluggish when the world and his dog were logged on later in the evening.

Washing machines and drying facilities were also available, but we didn’t use them this time. Good recycling facilities, too, which aren’t that plentiful across the rest of the islands.

If you want a good stop a stones throw from the main town or ferry terminal, this is the one for you.

Facilities were ample and scrupulously clean at all times. Loved the individual washrooms with shower, sink and toilet in each.

Well equipped kitchen with fridges and freezers - great idea to have stickers to pop on food that you didn’t want/ need so that others could use. Well priced washing machine and drier.

Great location for exploring Kirkwall and east Mainland. Within Kirkwall itself we really enjoyed the vintage vehicle rally, St Magnus cathedral, earth grain house (ask for the key at Judith Glue) and a local craft market.

Highly recommend the Real Food Cafe at Judith Glue, Lucano’s Italian restaurant and amazing ice cream from the lovely couple at Sinclair’s Ice Cream.

Further afield, we had a great walk and picnic at Mull Head where we saw seals and dolphins (don’t forget cash for the honesty box shop), explored the Churchill barriers, visited the Italian chapel and the beach and sea at Sands of Wright.

A very pleasant campsite with grass for tents and hard stands for campers. There was a separate area for tents.

Facilities were good: toilets, bathrooms, laundry facilities, kitchen with fridges and microwave oven, communal room to sit inside when the weather was suboptimal.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. Good rental bikes were available.

Wifi was rather crappy.

Three large supermarkets are a five minute walk away, and the town center is a ten minute walk away.

All in all it was a very pleasant stay.

Chemical waste disposal. The staff are very helpful and present on site most of the day.

Easy booking on line. Within walking distance of Kirkwall and local supermarkets.

Good central location Ideal for all, caravan motorhome and tents.

WiFi available. Would return.

Really nice site on the edge of Kirkwall. Whilst it can feel as if you're camping in the middle of a housing estate at the same time you're right next to the swimming pool / leisure centre so if the weather's bad there's still thigs to entertain the kids with. Tesco, Lidl and the Coop a 5-10 minute walk away.

We arrived late evening off the Aberdeen ferry but the camp site had already provided us with the barrier code so it was just a case of confirming our pitch on arrival and driving to it. Facilities block contains individual shower and toilet cubicles, a communal area and there are dishwashing facilities. Wardens friendly and visible.

Lots to do - Kirkwall boasts a Cathedral, two whisky and one gin distilleries, a couple of museums, some interesting shops and eating places, and the ferry terminal to Shapinsay and the Northern Isles. We drove down to St Margaret Hope and Sands o'Wright, and also across to Deerness to Newark Bay and Mull Head. We also drove south over the Churchill Barriers and to the Italian Chapel (tip - try to dodge the cruise ship tours)
