Best equipped campsite I have ever stayed in. Prices very reasonable and the communal lounge facility would be a life saver on a rainy day. Well done Orkney (or Kirkwall) council for investing generously in tourism.
Forget B & B; book in here instead and spend the money you save on a meal out; we recommend Real Food cafe at the back of Judith Glue's shop opposite cathedral. Local produce imaginatively served.
Scapa beach is a lovely nearby place for a walk.
Loved Orkney and will return thanks to this campsite.

Very Good site with Excellent facilities.
Level grass areas for tents with some trees for shelter and a couple of picnic tables. Liked the individual, unisex, toilet/handbasin/shower cubicles and found the kitchen with 6 washing up sinks, a kettle and microwave oven very useful.
There was also a good sized laundry room with 2 launderette style washing machines and a comfortable lounge stocked with some useful information leaflets.
Stayed 8 nights and bought a 7 day bus ticket to travel around the Island. Site conveniently situated for this since only about 10 minutes walk from the Bus Station. About 15 minutes walk from the centre of Kirkwall (with 3 supermarkets between the site and the town).
Would definitely go again and would recommend it to a friend.

Upon arrival at Pickaquoy we headed straight to the adjoining leisure centre (also a cinema) to book in. Not necessary as we could have gone straight to the manned sight but there was no sign, indication of this. Not a problem though.
The site entrance has an amenities block with an on site office, manned all day until about 6pm. Very friendly and helpful staff. Greeted by Linda (I seem to recall this as her name?!) What a lovely person! She helped us to get our pitch just right. She was also prompt in moving some people who had pitched invasively close to us on a late arrival. All done in the nicest way! Sadly the pitches aren’t fantastically well marked out and as the site isn’t manned in the evening, anybody on a late crossing are left to fathom the boundaries out for themselves. I only note this as a warning for anybody doing so. Maybe this year the mark out has changed?
It was a relatively small site, and extremely well serviced. Peaceful but a large play area adjoining site for children. Immaculately kept. The amenities were the best I have ever seen. In a solid built block and all under one roof were:
Upon entrance by key code (if arriving late, ask for code over phone) There was the office with very approachable, friendly and helpful staff.
Shower/ toilet/ sink blocks. With shelf, seat and hooks. Spacious and very clean! Cleaned by staff in the day but helpful to leave it as you find it too. Equipped for this with squeegee mops in hall way. Hairdryers outside shower rooms. I think these were 20p? Not sure as I took my own. We had electric hook up.
Also in block a lounge area with plenty of seating, heated, lots of information on local sites of interest etc.
A public telephone.
Toilet.
Laundry room…. Excellent!. Complete with washers, driers, sinks/ drainers for hand washing with cupboards underneath for storage. (write name/ pitch number on and nobody will touch …If leaving and anything left, leave on top with a note to help yourself!) Also had clothes airers, irons and ironing boards! Soap powder etc available at office.
A fitted out kitchen with numerous sinks/ drainers cupboards. A microwave and kettle. Again in here, it’s kept clean by staff but campers can leave as found. Also in here, if you are leaving and have bits and bobs that you don’t want to take. Leave on the top with a note to help yourself.
All very modern and new looking!
The location of the site: Just on the entrance to Kirkwall itself. Just a five minute walk to Tesco/ Lidl. Though truthfully, I REALLY recommend you walk five mins further into town and buy local produce. The meat, fish, local cheeses, baked goods, preserves etc…. Are second to none! Beautiful, local and fresh!
If eating out in Kirkwall, plenty of choice but highly recommend Dil Se (near the harbour) for the best curry I have ever had! A flavour explosion! AND local fresh produce.
The chip shop on same road. I think Harbour fry… You can eat in with pot of tea or take out and sit in front of harbour. THE BEST !
Large all day breakfasts served in town.
The Pamona café…. Been there forever… such a variety of cakes!
Or if it’s your fancy…. Go fishing off scapa pier to catch your own tea… beautiful fresh mackerel from sea to pan in no time!
ORKNEY….Study the Island before you go…. You won’t want to miss a thing. Stunning and steeped in history and nature.
PICKAQUOY. The best site I’ve ever used, struggling to match it this year!
KIRKWALL….A fab location to explore all over the Island/s. But make sure you explore the town itself too!

Arriving at midnight on the Aberdeen ferry, we found a sign with our name and pitch number and made haste to set up as quietly as possible.
It was dark and not too inviting but we were tired after a long trip and pitching at night is always difficult.
Morning came and wow, what a lovely site, the toilets and showers are the best I've been to. Unisex with toilet, basin and shower in each cubicle and the cleaner does an excellent job.
Great facilities with day room, kitchen, phone and laundry. Very friendly staff, fabulous location just outside Kirkwall, which we walked into every night.
Try going on the local ferrys to nearby islands on foot or bike as they are excellent value.
The whole trip was magical, much enhanced by our base camp at Kirkwall.

Spent a nice 3 nights there from 9th-12th weather was overcast and a lot of rain but when sun came out glorious. The site is very clean and well kept for a smallish camp site the amenities block very clean was upgraded last year unisex cubicles shower/toilet/sink in same room the hair dryers are in the corridor and need 20 pence piece for 3 minutes.T
he lounge is full of info on what is going on and to see in Orkney and the kitchen utilities for washing dishes very nice. If you are in a tent and situated next to the farm building there is a cockerel that goes off in the morning behind trees. Very close to Tesco and Lidl if coming from Stormness to kirkwall it is on your right from kirkwall itself head out at the signs towards the stormness road and it is on the left.
Very nice campsite and good base for exploring.

Spent a very enjoyable week on Orkney and used this site as our base.
We were a bit dubious when we first pulled up as it's close to the Leisure Centre and town, but that turned out to be a blessing, being so close to Tesco, (for bags of ice, as there are no facilities to re-freeze ice blocks), Lidl,(the only place we managed to find a replacement inflatable bed after a puncture), and Co-Op, for fresh crusty bread!
And the amenities block is outstanding, the best we've come accross in 25 years camping, spotless individual shower/sink/loo cubicles, a great modern kitchen with microwave and kettle, and even child height sinks so the kids can help with the washing up. Fantastic! (Though not sure if my 7yr old son would agree.)
A great lounge, laundry, and information board with weather forecasts and tide times, as well as local info on what's on.
We left our big tent there while we camped overnight on Westray in a small tent, no problems, and only £12.50 pn for a large tent, great value.
Would definitely go back there!

Stayed 2 nights here in a tent in mid June 2010.
Located a short distance from the centre of Kirkwall.
As others have said, you need to book in at the leisure centre next to the campsite.
Very short walk to the Co-op, Tesco & Lidl supermarkets.
The facilities block was excellent and seemed very new. Unisex all-in-one cubicles contained shower, toilet and handbasin. Very clean. There's also a lounge area, and a kitchen area in the same block.
There are several areas for tents on this site. Some are next to the sports pitches of the leisure centre - so may be a little noisy during the day.
At night the only noise was the occasional distant throaty exhaust from the boy racers in town, some snoring from a nearby tent, and a dawn chorus that began at 2.30am both nights - the blackbirds are early risers in Orkney.
I would stay here again.

Located in Kirkwall minutes walk away from supermarkets and town centre. In grounds of sports / entertainment centre (with cinema). Good sized hardstanding and grass pitches - some located very near to outdoor sports pitches.
Utility block of unusually high standard - lounge, kitchen with microwave, laundry, mixed sex toilet/shower facilities - 2 or 3 individual rooms with toilet and basin and about 12 rooms with toilet, basin and shower. All done to a very high specification and immaculately clean. However, as a very fussy woman I found that I don't like going in to a shower room that a man has just vacated! Give me the standard cubicles any day!

The site is very close to the town centre and is attached to the leisure centre where you have to book in (note. Its not the same entrance as the campsite)
It has plenty of flat dry tent areas with hedges for shelter.I was just told to pitch anywhere
The building is modern with a room you can go and relax in and the toilets/ shower area is superb with individual ,large cubicles, incorporating a toilet, washbasin and a great shower. A real pleasure to use.
The site is close walking distance from a Coop and Tesco supermarket. The town is about 15 minutes walk (3 minutes cycle)and has everything you need including a cycle shop, plenty of bars/ restaurants. A pleasant town to stroll through and with the harbour nearby.
This is a great base for touring Orkney although kirkwall is in a hollow so be prepared to climb some steepish hills to get anywhere.

Great site with excellent facilities. Very clean toilets and showers, dish washing facilities and washing facilities (although one of the two washers was out of action).
Site itself felt very spacious with a small kids playground on site (invaluable if you have children). On the edge of Kirkwall and is only 2 minutes walk from a Co-op, Tesco and Lidl. Then only another 2 minutes and your in Kirkwall's 'High Street'.
The staff at the adjoining Leisure Centre are in charge of booking people in to the site on behalf of the council which is a bit confusing on arrival.
My biggest problem was the way the cost for camping was worked out. If I remember correctly, there was a price for a small tent (1 person), a medium tent (2-3 person) or large tent. I am sure that pricing people by the berth of their tent would be easier - we had 3 four-man tents in our group with 2 in one, 3 in another and 4 in the third. Although the ground space was roughly the same for each the party with 4 people paid for a large tent (more money) and were placed away from my group as they had to have a specific site. Despite the tent area beside my tent being empty for the next 3 nights the party with the 'large' tent was not allowed to camp there (oh and the Duty Manager was overruled by the Senior Receptionist on this point).
