Third and objective of our club trip to Orkney. On Arrival there was some confusion on where tents and caravans were going as we had booked as a group. Then they moved one tent because it had 4 persons in it saying it was to go in with the large tents even though all the tents were roughly the same size?. Also told it was going to be 'Heaving' which turned out NOT to be the case
Reception is at the leisure centre, who don't seem to have much interest in the site!
Saying that, the site is very clean and the amenities on site are the best I have encountered so far. Key code entry(which you get when you book in) Rooms with toilet, wash basin and shower. Also washing area,Laundry area and a little sitting room.Excellent!
There is a small childs play park which you can also acsess the leisure center through.
All in all an excellent site, pity about their silly pitch allocation system.

Arrived with no booking - you book in at the Leisure Centre a few minutes away. They told us all hard standing / electric booked for the next week. So we took a pitch on the grass with the tents.
When we went to pitch up we found someone else on the pitch - back to reception to check and we were told to pitch anywhere now. Several people on the site unhappy that tents and campervans were being pitched very close together and no one from the site available to come and resolve.
There isn't a warden on site - its all done through the Leisure Centre - and to be honest they are too far away to come over and check / deal with any problems.
Next morning back to reception and a new receptionist - who advises plenty of hardstanding and electric available - not sure if a sudden mass cancellation from the previous day.
Site facilities are the best ever- small cubicles containing toilet, basin and shower. Tesco / Coop only a 5 minute walk away. 10 minute walk to the harbour where they were several good restaurants and bars.
Overall a good site - but desperately needs a warden on site as the Leisure Centre staff are not on hand to assist with problems or look after the site.

This campsite is new and its new facilities block is less than a year old. What a fab site! We've been to many over the years and this has the best facilities by far!
You check in at the sports centre beside the site where we received a welcome pack. We were assigned a great hard standing pitch close to the facilities block.
The facilities block is secure and entered with a code you get in your pack when you check in. Unlike other campsites where there's a male and female area with a few toilets, sinks and a couple of shower cubicles what Pickaquoy had was a dozen private spacious rooms with a toilet, sink and massive curtained shower - luxury! The showers were hot and had decent pressure. Outside were four 'proper' hairdryers. There was an information board updated daily with weather news and information about what was going on in Orkney that day. There was a lovely lounge, a phone cubicle, a kitchen area and a laundry room.
The 'next door' Sports Centre has a health suite, kids play area, gym, cafe and a new cinema. Outside there's a great playground for children.
Nearby there is a Spar petrol station, Tesco and Co-op. The main town is about 15 minutes walk. Lots of lovely bars, restaurants and very friendly people.
Thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Orkney - and the Pickaquoy campsite helped to make it an enjoyable stay.

Initially we were going to stay at Stromness site which looked very picturesque right next to the harbour, but as we had a tent it did seem a bit exposed so we ended up here.
This is a flat, grassy sight with hard gravelled pitches for vans right on the edge of Kirkwall town centre -near enough to have everything at hand, but not near enough to be noisy or disruptive. After all the pace of life here seemed to be decidedly laid back!
It is next to the leisure centre which is the reception for the site and as the facilities were undergoing a total revamp you could use the facilities at the centre for free. There was also temporary new portacabins on site with very clean and free showers. The new shower/ toilet block is due to be finished soon. There was also a lounge/ washing room with machines and dryers. There is a cinema in the leisure centre (£4.70 for adults)which is handy if the weather is bad and there is a tesco, lidl and coop all within 2 minutes walk. Kirkwall town centre and harbour are both a 5 minute walk.
The site is good value at £10 a night for a large tent with 4 people and although a lot of people came and went it was probably only about half full. There are designated areas for tents which tended to be the leafy more sheltered corners which was handy.
Orkney itself was fascinating, the scenery stunning and the people super friendly so I can't wait to make a return visit.

One of only a few sites on Orkney, this one is in Kirkwall only a 5 minute walk from the centre and adjacent to the leisure centre. There is a lot of work going on at the site to improve it. An new area of hardstandings for motorhomes should now be ready, and some temporary extra showers/toilets have been provided beside the existing ones. There are plans to upgrade the rest of the site possibly next year.
The existing facilities were fine and well kept. Showers cost 20p, other hot water free. Dish washing area combined with laundry housing washing machines and tumble driers. The older part of the site is mainly sloping and there are limited EHUs. The site was busy while we were there so booking is probably essential. Several motorhomes were turned away as the site was full. The new hardstanding area should greatly improve things.
Hardstandings on the older area are only a small gravelled area and not level. When we arrived there was a broken-down Austrian motorhome occupying our pre-booked pitch so we had to hang around for ages as they were trying to get it moved. When we checked out the pitch (no 1) we realised is was far too small for our caravan, and sloped in all directions. They were not keen to let us have a different pitch, but after an hour passed with no sign of the motorhome owner we were allowed to take the grass pitch immediately opposite the toilets, which was nice and flat, so a good outcome in the end.
There were several tents on the site tucked away in sheltered corners, Orkney can be very windy, and lots of motorhomes, but only 4 caravans. Motorhome service point right at the gate opposite toilet block and chemical toilet emptying point round the side. As there is no reception point on the site (you book in at the leisure centre) there was a pretty constant stream of motorhomers just coming in to empty tanks, use the showers and do laundry.
Between the site and the town centre there are 3 supermarkets, Somerfield, Co-op and Lidl. Choice is good and prices reasonable. Many small specialist shops in the town centre. Plenty to see and nothing is too far away for a day trip, unless you plan to visit some of the further flung islands. We were there 8 nights and only just managed to see most of Mainland, so plenty left to justify another trip! We used the ferry from Gills Bay near John O'Groats as it was less expensive. Crossing time is just over 1 hour.
