I visited this site for the first time this summer. We went before the school holidays and it was very quiet; cant comment on busy periods though. The site is wonderful; the only negative comment is the awful over priced food served from the cafe. There is lots for kids to do and the pub serves a great pint of Guinness!

This was our first camping trip in this country and what a great first experience. Impressed with efficiency of reception staff and wardens who show you personally to your pitch. Lovely location, spotlessly clean and excellent facilities. Perhaps the shop could do with a few more items on its shelf but the otherwise this is a kiddly paradise.
We will definitely return.

First impressions of this site are very good as you enter down a long driveway through fields which later give way to the gardens of the Mansion House. The gardens at the front of the house have plenty of mature trees (including redwoods) and lawns where campers picnic etc. It's great there is no camping in this area. The campsite feels spacious although, in mid-August, there was hardly a spare pitch to be had.
We were on the Picnic Meadow down by the bridge, with the River Dart on one side and a small stream along the other. There were tiny fish in the stream and dragonflies overhead. It seems the campsite has recently expanded into both this area and the Walled Garden. There is no electric on the Picnic Meadow, though there is on the Main camping field.
The toilets nearest our tent were clean and had paper. The showers didn't drain very well, so there was standing water on the floor at peak times. The cleaning staff were very cheerful and efficient. In fact, all the staff we met (and there are plenty) were friendly and efficient.
Facilities:
It has to be said the pool is rather old and small. It isn't flush with the surroundings like modern pools and the area around the pool was uneven paving stones.
There are 2 areas of adventure play. The one at the top of the site by the mansion consists mainly of a gigantic rope web, which was fun, and an Anaconda slide.
The second playground is in two parts. There's a small lake with a beach, bridges, ropes and a pirate ship. The beach needed a bit of attention as someone had obviously had great fun dgging trenches all over it. There's a second lake where you can hire 3-seater canoes for £7 for 30 mins. It seemed a bit tame, but might suit younger children. You can do proper canoing and white water rafting from the site at extra cost.
Once you get past the lake there is an adventure playground in the woods, with 2 zipwires and various things for swinging and climbing on.
The other paid activities are a mega zipwire, which was fun, and a High ropes walk in the woods, which was a bit too ambitious for us.
Facilites near the Mansion include a bar and cafe (separate) with a reasonably-priced games room at the back. There's a little shop, which stocks camping stuff, swimming stuff, souvenirs and a few essentials. Films are shown in the Ballroom (we saw Shrek 2) and the very big tv in there was also available for the cricket. There's another tv in the bar and I'm glad to say the sound is turned down in favour of music as the evening progresses.
In the 4 days we were there we had plenty to do and didn't really need to leave the site at all. Though the great Chinese takeout in Ashburton deserves an honourable mention:-)
The pool does need updating but they seem professional enough to have realised that. And we also had trouble bookin in the first place, with email unanswered and nobody answering the phones in the evening. I phoned in the daytime eventually & got booked quite quickly. In the end I was glad I hadn't given up.

This was our second visit and we had a fantastic week - only went off site a couple of times as we were all having such fun messing about in our inflatable boat at the pirate lake. The adventure playgrounds are also excellent and our children enjoyed riding their bikes down the slope on the camping field.
One of the toilet and shower blocks was significantly better than the other - only a minor gripe though - we'll be back!

We camped here for 9 nights and loved it - 2 adults a 9,6 and 2 year old. The facilities were excellent - adventure playgrounds galore - felt that 8+ year olds probably got the most benefit from the activities. The site was pricey but nothing compared to a mobile home or apartment holiday and the location was wonderful. There was a high turnover of tents with most people staying only a few nights - and with just under 200 pitches it could get quite noisy with campers competing with sing songs and car radios. The wardens were supposed to patrol after 10pm but we had a few disturbed nights.
The facilities were wonderful - there was even a (spotless)bath with hot water in the top amenity block!! great for young kids who don't like showers!
There was a washing machine and dryer and three freezers for cool blocks in our block...plus proper dish drainers at washing-up station!! The shop had every camping gadget you might have left at home plus a good supply of inflatables, water shoes and cheap games...range of food was limited but sold the basics plus fresh bread and papers.
This was also an excellent base for exploring the area and very accessible. Ashburton, a couple of miles away, has all the (small)shops you will need and also a great camping shop visible from the A38. There was loads to see and do and the coast isn't far!!
Overall,would highly recommend this campsite to families with young(ish) children, but be prepared to sleep on a slope and level out fridges and cookers....

We have stayed at this site 5 times over the past few years. It is absolutely beautiful, with well maintained grounds, woodland areas, a nd riverside access. There are masses of things to keep children entertained, the adventure play equipment is second to none, with aerial runs, tree top walk, slides, etc, which are all suitable for children over the age of about 5/6 and can take the weight ( and is allowed!!) of a 12/13 stone adult. There is a nice lake, with play equipment and Faux 'beach' for little ones. The pitches are reasonable,if a bit uneven. We choose to pitch alongside wooded areas, although there are many pitches in open fields, it is worth getting a map in advance to select your pitch. The showers and toilets are adequate, and well maintained, although they do get VERY busy in high season, due to the limitless space available( or so it seems!) to tourers etc. The small swimming pool/ baby pool, is ok, but could do with some tlc, it does'nt seem to have been maintained very well, with cracked tiles, and a bit grubby looking!there are 2 tennis courts available for free, but get your booking in quickly! We found the site shop pretty useless, mainly sweets/cakes junk food, and a few basics, and you've got NO CHANCE if your a vegetarian, its very much burgers/bacon/eggs. No alcohol in shop, but shops in Ashburton are ok.The cafe on site and restaurant/bar are pretty basic. The restaurant is very dingy inside, and we thought overpriced.The big downside would have to be the day visitors, who are allowed access to all the facilities apart from the pool/tennis.( and camping area)This can make for a rather crowded environment.No camp fires, but you can have BBQs and those garden candles, etc! The upside has to be the easy access to Dartmoor, only a 10 min drive, and some decent beaches about 1 hour away, we like preston sands, rock pools, sandy beach, toilets, cafe etc, bit hard to park but worth it, and Bigbury, fab sand, cafe toilets, etc. there are loads of attractions nearby.

Excellent site with good facilities
Plenty of room between pitches. Toilets were clean and there was plenty of hot water.
The kids loved it, the pirate ship area & woodland play areas kept them entertained for hours. We stayed for 5 days and each night it was quiet at 10pm, so no problem getting the kids to sleep. Plenty of open space for games. Tennis courts are free to use and they even provided rackets if you didn't have any. 2 swimming pools (1 for toddlers & the other for everyone else) which did not seem to get crowded at any point during our stay.
There is some where to eat but thought it was a bit expensive for what was offered

I wanted to update the reviews of this site, whilst agreeing with most of the positive comments below.
Firstly, it appears to have changed its name to River Dart Adventures. but there is no real change to the campsite.
The whole setting of the camp is wonderful - between two sets of hills, feeling like it's miles from anywhere (but less than a mile to Ashburton). The facilities for children are absolutely great - three separate park areas, one with a water theme (inc pirate boat), one with a fort and aerial runway, and a third with a jugle theme.
Staff seem pleasant, and the toilets and showers are excellent. Our pitch, in theory, was small, but in fact we were told to use what ever space we needed.
On the downside:
- the site has a significant slope
- it is possible to be some distance from a toilet
- the lower field gets flooded
- the shop and cafe are unremarkable
- the shower block 'fused' regularly
In summary, not perfect, but one of the best sites we have been to.

I can highly recommend this site. Pitches are spacious and not too crowded, facilities are excellent, the pirate ship and wooded play areas ensured we hardly saw the kids. There is also plently of open space for games and nice walks.It is pricey but worth it for all the extras. The only downside was the resturant which serves cafeteria style food at overinflated prices - unsurprisingly it wasn't very popular whilst we were there, bit of a missed opportunity on the part of the owners. However everything else was excellent - we will definitely be back.

Have visited twice now and endorse the previous comments. Excellent campsite with fantastic facilities for the kids. Was rather pricey but worth it! 2 shower blocks, one with famiy bathroom (fantastic). All hot water and washing up facilities free and facilties kept clean. Pitches are spacious and we found no problems with noise at night etc. Campsite does have small inclines and some pitches are on a slight hill but not enough to cause any problems. Snack bar and bar serving food on site. Great food in bar, not too expensive and portions are massive!! (2 could share 1 meal!!)
Camp shop opens at 8am and sells papers, bread etc... not a fantastic selection but just enough to do. Nearby is Ashburton (1 mile) with small Spar, open late and various shops inc takeaways and there is a big Tesco's about 7 miles away in Newton Abbott. Coast is 10 miles away (Paignton). All in all we thoroughly recommend this site and would hvae no hesitation in returning!!
