 We were the friends mentioned by 'Selleyd' below and here is our review.
This was our first ever camping trip so did not know what to expect.The site is very large and well away from any traffic noise. Very child friendly with play areas across site.
Staff were mainly young Australian people on working holiday and were very nice and had many a friendly chat with them at the bar.
Only annoying thing was the old style push button shower that gives you about 5 seconds of water before switching off. Don't let this put you off though as it is only 10mins of your life!
They are very strict about noise after dark and numerous signs up telling you the rules. On our stay everyone obeyed them and no problems at all.
We have already booked our week long pitch together next May, except their trailer tent has now become a brand new caravan and our two man tent has become a massive 9 man one. Thank you Dart for giving us the camping bug!

Have just returned from a 4 day stay at the site.
We have a trailer tent and booked a hard standing site with electric hook up.
Even though the site was busy there was plenty of space between pitches.
We visited with friends who had a separate pitch, between us there were a crawler (8 months old) two toddlers and a teenager, they all had a fantastic time.
All amenities are very good and there are enough to cater to everyone's needs at busy times.
The staff are all very friendly.
This is a site that will cater for all ages.
I would recommend a visit

We were back for our 3rd trip and yet again really enjoyed it. This time we were camped in the picnic meadow so had to figure out how to balance mine and son's clothes on 2 pegs without dropping them into the large pool of water that was our shower cubicle! The showers in the main camping field may be older but at least they drain! Also missed the family bathroom (with bath) that is available in the main camping field.
That said, we didn't leave the campsite much as our boys were very happy mucking about on the lake and in the adventure playground. We ventured to Trago Mills to buy a new wetsuit for eldest who'd grown since last year - well worth it for keeping him warm! The unlimited travel on the Trago mills steam train was also good value.
We liked Ashburton's Indian take away and thought the camp site's locally made icecreams were rather yummy too.

We were on pitch 12 on the Village Green. Using our main tent, pup tent and Gazebo. There was plenty of room on the pitch (including car parking space). However, this pitch was on a pretty bad slope. In fact all of the pitches at the north end of the Village Green are on a bad slope! We had to place bricks under our table to keep it level! There were no hook ups on this part of the site.
The site itself is beautiful, with lots of open green spaces and picnic areas. Walkways lead all around the site, taking you past little wooded areas and small rivers and ponds. During our visit we did not see any litter or dog mess.
The shower block at the Village Green was very good. We did not use any of the others.
The shop is adequate. Stocking drinks and essential provisions. However, as Ashburton is only 5 minutes by car, this was not a problem.
Ashburton is a lovely village, with plenty of shops and pubs. There is a pay and display car park in the centre.
The Cafe and Bar are basic, without much atmosphere. The staff are friendly enough.
We enjoyed using the tennis courts, which are free (but must be booked, and only for 1/2 an hour!)
The pool is very basic and needs updating. It is small and a little tatty now.
The adventure play areas are very good. Excellent for kids (old and young)
The canoes were great fun, but the lake itself is very small!
We also did the high ropes course, which is fantastic. If you go to River Dart, you really should do the High Ropes course. It is well laid out, but if like me you are scared of heights it is a real challenge! (I did see some youngsters who almost ran around the course!) It took me about 1 hour.
To sum up, River Dart is a very clean and tidy site, with adequate facilities, and excellent adventure play areas. If you have kids who (or you yourself) are the outward bound type, this site will be ideal.

Just returned from 4 nights stay at River Dart following recommendations from friends who go every year. The site is in a lovely wooded valley with the river running through. We pitched in the woodlands area and although slightly sloping caused no problems. Pitches are large, we had plenty of room for 8 man tent plus gazebo. The shower block was old but kept reasonably clean and showers hot. The site itself has loads to keep children occupied, including water play, adventure areas featuring zip wires and tyre swings etc plus plenty of wooded walks for dogs. All the above is free, but there are paying activities should you want them, these include a high ropes course, climbing wall and mega zip wire. The staff were without fault, mostly youngsters many from overseas but all were polite and helpful. We ate in the cafe on two occasions and the food was good, plentiful and not obscenely overpriced. The one thing that could do with major overhaul is the site shop. If you want inflatables for the river it is fine, if you want provisions of any kind you are better off popping down to Ashburton or maybe even Newton Abbott. Overall excellent site, lovely setting and very good staff.

Just arrived back from site - a week of real pleasure with a 6 and 8 year old. This site is perfect for anyone with active children - there are a number of different activities around the site that are open 24/7 - telling the kids "Yes, you can go on the zip wire" at 8am in the morning prompted a look of disbelief in ours.
We stayed in the overflow field -this is brilliant because you can decide whether or not to stay another day every morning, as long as you tell reception by 11am.
Nearby attractions abound:
Ashburton -1 mile -lovely quiet town with excellent Indian takeaway on the main street.
Buckfastleigh Totnes and Dartington - 5 to 10 miles - arty pretty small towns.
Burgh Island beach /Bigbury Bay - beautiful sandy beach with rockpools and small cafe - 35 mins.
No probs with the showers(powerful and free) or toilets - free freezers for drinks and icepacks.
This campsite isn't cheap but with so many activities for the kids included in the price ( minibeach, giant pirate ship, numerous assault courses, woodland walks ) we found it just perfect.
Our original concerns of tackiness and overcrowding were unfounded.

What a site! The facilities are excellently maintained and the amenity blocks always had hot water despite the site being full. The shop stocks everything you may need from a pint of milk and your morning paper to a replacement tent! The cafe and bar offer a good range of food and drinks, though we felt they were quite expensive (I have never liked paying pub prices for beer!).
The swimming pool could do with a bit of a face lift but saying that it to appeared to be reasonably well maintained.
The tennis courts are very popular and need to be booked at busy times. Bookings are taken at the reception desk and each booked session is for half an hour.
The playgrounds are good and offer a variety of physical challenges to children of all ages - they were well used and loved by my two. The water play areas are an inspiration utilising the fact that the River Dart is just a couple of yards away. All the channels feeding the play areas look as if they are natural.
The site provide climbing and canoeing activities at an extra cost (£3 for the climbing wall, £7 for canoeing for half an hour for up to 3 people). All activities are supervised by qualified instructors.
We were disappointed with Ashburton. It is a lovely little town but lacked a decent supermarket. It only had a very small Somerfield and a Spar. We found ourselves heading out to Newton Abbot(about 8 miles away) to find a supermarket of reasonable size (Tesco, right opposite the race course). There is also a Co-op at the "Trago Mills Leisure Park" which is signposted off of the A38 as you head back towards Exeter. Ashburton does have a couple of takeaways that are pretty good (I definitely recommend the Indian and "The Red Mullet" fish and chip shop)
The site is excellently located for the steam lovers amoung us with the South Devon Steam Railway being just 1 junction along the A38 towards Plymouth at Buckfastleigh.
Overall we had a great time here but will say that the roads at this time of year can be a nightmare (school hols and all!). Wherever we went we found the traffic jam from hell! So if, like us, you do venture out (with the facilities at this site there is, in all honesty, very little need to, beer supplies withstanding!) allow extra time for your journey.

We booked six nights here which cost £240 for 2 adults and 4 kids, so it isn't cheap but then you are paying for the facilities available. The site is very much child orientated and if you want some peace and quiet, dont come here! However if you dont want to traipse around numerous attractions, spending a fortune all week, this is the place for you. The kids were free to wander around trying out all sorts of things, most of which is free, although some things, such as canoeing and climbing are extra. There is 24 hour security on the site which was reassuring, and the site was generally clean and tidy. The only negative thing I would say is that some things are looking a bit tired, such as the swimming pool area and in the pirate ship lake there are several concrete obstacles which we managed to injure ourselves on. So its a 9/10 although our kids would probably give it 11!

Just been there for a weekend with our 2 boys. The weather was fantastic - which helped - but the site was great. It's well kept, excellent facilities, good site staff presence always willing to help and family orientated. We were in the 'Picnic Meadow' (overflow) which we actually preferred - more space and nice & flat but a further walk to the main activities. Also only 4 showers for what must have been 40+ pitches ! good job it wasn't that full I guess. More facilities dotted around the site though.
I did like the pitches - very generous, well marked and grassy.
It's an adventure biased place but it's for all abilities so if you/your children like to be outside doing lot's of different things then it's well worth a visit.

We camped (two families) over the first weekend of the half term holidays. We were in the "overflow"/picnic field as site was fully booked. Had a fantastic time. Stream running along one side and River Dart the over. Large well-marked out pitches - large enough for a 9 man dome tent, gazebo and trailer on one pitch. Toilet and amenity block very close by. Very clean, although ditto another comment - at peak times showers flooded - could do with leaving a brush or something to help it drain a bit quicker! Didn't need to leave the site.
Facilities fantastic - kids loved the ariel slides, cows udder, spiders web etc. Also spent a lot of time at the pirate ship lake with our dingy. Kids and men (35+) really enjoyed the assault course and the DareDevils tree top challenge (buy tokens) - so much so that we've kept some tokens for a return visit - hopefully in the summer. Didn't use the pool - although again, ditto previous comment, could really do with a re-vamp! Popped into shop but didn't use pub/restaurant as cooked ourselves.
Advise to book early as excellent site. Will definitely be returning.
