Okay. Firstly Id like to say we normally love Forest Holiday sites and have never had anything but praise for them. We return time and time again to try out different Forest Holiday's. However on this occasion I felt we may have paid a high price for the views as the facilities were lacking.
Yes the views are outstanding. Breathtaking. The Forest Of Dean is beautiful. So you will not be disappointed if you are going for the scenery.
We arrived at Bracelands on the Thurs before May B/H weekend. We checked into reception at Christchurch, paid our refundable £10 for gate key and went along to the site. Fairly empty, so found a pitch that we liked, we paid for EHU on this occasion. Its quite odd however that the rangers come by and make sure you are pitching the way they want you to. I think this only happens on the EHU pitches. Luckily we chose a pitch away from the toilet block otherwise you were told to pitch with your tent door facing the toilets, how strange when the views the other way are fantastic. There were a whole row of caravans all facing a fence and the toilets.
There are 3 toilet blocks. Fairly old. 1 free hairdryer in ladies, but not working. The toilets were clean on day of arrival (Thurs) however come Saturday, due to being busy there was no toilet roll by 10am. It got messy very quickly.
The shop on the Christchurch site has a Costa coffee. This was out of service. The shop sold alcohol, however, couldn't sell it due to awaiting licence renewal. The food shelves were empty. Again, this was probably because it was a B/H weekend.
I feel we would not return to Bracelands due to the negative things I've mentioned. However the rangers are great, friendly, and helpful, however I feel the other things let the site down.

It's the view towards the Wye Valley that have brought me back here several times but it's not only that:
Good clean toilet blocks (3 of them in high season)along with all other facilities (water, waste, litter)in easy reach from everywhere and make for a convenient and comfortable site.
True, it's some way to the site office and shop at the sister site at Christchurch (about 1 km down the forest road from the entrance gate) but this is only a small gripe.
The £10 deposit for the gate key ensures greater security and on busy mornings one of the wardens is there to collect the keys and refund the tenners to leaving campers saving a stop off at the office on the way out.
Staff have always been friendly and helpful.Even on the busier days on this popular site. I've never encountered problems pitching a tent, the soil depth is good so no bent tent pegs.
The site is surrounded by woodland with a good choice of woodland walks, either around the site, down to the Wye Valley itself or along the top of the valley sides and I've never yet failed to spot the deer that roam these parts. Symonds Yat viewpoint is only about 2.5 miles away while the beautiful village down by the river is about the same too.
The Forest of Dean has plenty to see and do.Cannop Ponds, Mallards Pike, Dean Mining Museum with real mine tour, Sculpture Trail and lots of walking and cycle tracks, Dean Forest Steam Railway and more.
Not been to the sister Christchurch or Woodlands sites on the Berry Hill complex but Bracelands sets a high standard.

We stayed at the end of August, arriving on a Thursday and staying for just two nights.
We found the campsite to be relatively empty as it was a Thursday arrival and the typical British weather had obviously put people off. So we had a good selection of pitches available and eventually chose one that was in the field, furthest from the entrance. It was a pretty level pitch with a short bladder busting run to the toilet block. The block itself, was clean, though did smell a bit, the showers were good and hot and it wasn't too much of a chore to keep re-pressing the button to keep the hot stream of water flowing. Always plenty of toilet paper available, so no panics mid-business! Washing up facilities were also as required, no complaints
Locally there is plenty to do for young families. We made sure we went to Puzzlewood, which was an amazing place, especially as we were there as soon as it opened and so had the wood to ourselves for a while. There are also a few animals there that can be petted if you lean over the fencing. The goats were very friendly!Definitely worth a visit.
We also went to the Perrygrove railway and had a fun few hours there, hunting down the clues for the treasure hunt. The steam trains were great fun and everyone there was very friendly and helpful. Recommended.
We can recommend The Ostrich Inn, in Newlands for food. It is a drive away (10 mins), but it is worth it as there is a good choice of food and again the staff were ever so friendly. Opens at 6:30 in the evenings and I suggest you get there around that time as the tables soon start filling up.
We plan to come back here again, though may try the Christchurch site, as it has a Playground and is right next to the shop.
Still loads of places to visit in this area and we didn't even get a chance to do a walk in the Forest!

We have just returned from a bank holiday weekend at this site, its a huge site taking over 500 units, and you can pitch where you like within reason as long as you are 6 metres from other tents. We could only pick from 1 or 2 areas as we arrived Saturday of bank hol W/E and a lot of people had arrived the day before, we were in 2 tent units so trying to find a space big enough for 2 large tents and 2 vehicles was limited but we got a nice fairly flat area close to the entrance, near to toilets and close to one of the gates to the forest so the kids could come and go, they loved exploring the forest and building dams in the stream. The toilet units although a bit tatty looking are fairly clean, and the water is hot, too hot for kids at times in the showers, and the temp cannot be adjusted in shower. The only drawback is not plug sockets in the ladies for hairdryers! We had no ECH so I had to let my hair dry naturally (not good with my frizz!) Plenty of loos/showers, and only ever 2 people in front of me for showers at peak time. YOu can walk to a couple of pubs, from end of drive, but the drive is quite long and steep walk to get to exit to sites. Symonds Yat is beautiful, we sat in a pub on the east side and got a boat up river, the east is the nicer side and you can park at the end or at the top and walk down. Would go again but get hook up next time. Great for kids, for forest, great for bikes or walking too. Shop at Christchurch site, up the hill is well stocked. Only thing lacking is playground for our age of kids

Can't rate this site high enough. Fantastic helpful staff, I had a flat battery, gas hose needed & my number plate fell off. They were only too happy to assist.
Nice clean facilities, plenty of room in each of the 3 WC/ shower areas, loads of room on the site with some lovely walks down to the river Wye as well
Views to die for. Will definitely be returning

Have just returned from a weeks camping at Bracelands and it was beautiful! If you can get a pitch up on one of the highest pitches, the views over the valley are breathtaking and the sun sets just beyond. The site is great for access to Symonds Yat which is within walking distance and for the greater part of the Forest of Dean to the east. The washing facilities were basic but in good order. There were three large blocks on the site which more than catered for the amount of pitches available. In peak season, we didn't have to queue for a shower! All in all, a truly wonderful family holiday. We would recommend mountain biking and canoe hire, our four year old thoroughly enjoyed both! Happy days.

The camp site is in a fantastic location and has very good clean toilets and wash up area. The showers were hot and powerful, only problem was you have to continually push the button because they don't seem to last very long. The pressure of the water was really good for me, it felt like I was getting a massage and they are lovely and hot, I couldn't get out!
The area is beautiful with lovely walks through the forest. You are able to pitch where ever you like and we decided to pitch next to the forest edge. We stayed here over the bank holiday weekend in May and it was relatively busy but still plenty of space. If you feel energetic you can walk through the forest along a footpath down to the river, not so easy coming back up! The campsite is a short drive away from the amazing Simonds Yat and Yat rock, with fantastic views over the Wye Valley. You can walk down from yat rock to the river, not for the faint hearted!
If you like the feel of being close to nature then you will love this site. Owls hooting in the night, animals rustling around and an amazing dawn chorus. Be sure to keep the gate to the forest closed due to the wild boar that live in the forest!
I have stayed in the Christchurch site up the road and loved it there too but prefer this site as it feels more out of the way and back to nature. On our next visit we plan to pitch our tent over looking the valley, the views and location are absolutely amazing.

Lovely spacious site with lots of nice walks around the area. We have a large tent but it was no problem here as you could pitch where you liked so long as you were at least 6 metres from your neighbours. The field was a little hilly and our pitch had a very very slight slope, but looking around if we had been that bothered we could easily have found somewhere totally flat.
Toilet facilities were clean and adequate - my only criticsm is that you cannot change the temperature on the showers and at times they were a little too hot for comfort. There are 3 blocks around the field with plenty of toilets and showers so even in busy periods I don't think there would be long queues. On the other hand there aren't many washing up sinks and even though the site wasn't particularly busy, at peak times these sinks were constantly in use.
I'd go back to this site again - the facilities are basic but good and its in a beautiful setting. The shop may be a little overpriced, but it stocks a good range of things and is convenient.

Very friendly reception staff at the Christchurch site, which is only 5 mins walk from the Bracelands Site which is further down into the woods. Small campshop with necessities, open until 9.00 p.m. Very clean toilets and showers with all you need. 10 min walk through the wood to a pub that did the usual pup grub (only 5 mins if you camp at Christchurch site). We went to the Kings Head, but I believe there is another one (The New Inn) in the other direction. Would stay here again, would be great to explore on the bikes if we had had more time.
