A great site right near keswick town centre, the facilities are great the shower and toilet block are really nice and modern. There is a nice restaurant on site and a campers room with games and a kettle and freezer to use which I thought was really nice.
Also a very good shop selling food and camping things.
There is a choice of fields we stayed in one on the left when you go into the camp which was sloping a bit but overlooked derwent lake the views were great. We had ducks and rabbits in our field which kept our 4 year old amused.
There was a good mix of people, families and couples, also from the camp you can do a lot of walks we are not really walkers but still enjoyed the camp, you can actually walk down to derwent lake through a nice forest we saw a few deer also a stream runs next to the camp with is good for the kids to paddle in.

Spectacular location with magnificent views over Derwent. Well stocked shop on site. Most of the pitches fully serviced. Three toilet blocks on site, two of these modern with showers. Very clean. However the toilets/showers/wash up facilities are a hike from the lower pitches (pitches 25 - 37) and only one chemical disposal point which is a hike from the higher pitches. On site restaurant, decor very nice but food mediocre for cost.
Keswick only 5 Minutes by car 20 minute walk there, but 40 minute walk back (all uphill). Lots of food places, very good Booths supermarket. Great location for walks direct from site. No facilities/play area for children and could not find dog walk (staff didn’t know either but advised local walk off site). All in all highly recommend this site and would go back but will book one of the higher top pitches on next visit.

This site was our second choice as the C&CC site was fully booked. Phoned on the Thursday to book for Fri-Mon but told no bookings taken - simply arrive as early as possible (ie before lunch). On arrival (11.30am) there were at least 4 other new arrivals and the receptionist appeared a little frustrated with repeating the instruction to try to find a pitch, pitch your tent and then return to pay.
Disappointingly the main field was full (though on having a walk around it later there would have been plenty of room!) we were told to pitch in the overflow field. As this was quite busy and we prefer to pitch at the edge of a field the only choice for us was at the very bottom of the very steep field. Wasn't really a problem until the heavy rain on the third night! Thank goodness for built-in ground sheets!
The new toilet/shower block in the main camping field was stunning - better kitted out than my brand new on suite! But there are only 4 showers - best get in early to save a lengthy wait. And they are few minutes walk from the overflow field, but worth it. The main toilet / shower block located at the entrance to the site are adequate and closer to the overflow field. There's also a small very ancient toilet block at the bottom corner of the overflow field - would give this a miss unless its an emergency!
There is also a 'campers kitchen' in the main block with a couple of dish washing sinks, freezer (though only ever cooled our blocks), a pay as you go microwave, electric hob, toaster and kettle. And several benches and tables. Handy if the weather gets bad and seems to be used by those with teeny weeny tents!
On site shop is well stocked and reasonably priced. Also has camping equipment should you need anything. Didn't try the restaurant though seemed busy in the evenings.
We walked into Keswick from the site, about 1 1/2 miles down hill (take the turn for Manor Brow and brings you out in shopping area). As it would have been a very steep walk back we tried the bus (£1.70 per person and roughly every half hour from outside Booths - drops you off at bottom of lane up to camp site) and a taxi (£4.50 also from outside Booths).
Views from top of overflow field and the caravan terraces are stunning. Pity we couldn't see them from the bottom of the steep overflow field!
Keswick is a fantastic place - lots to do and see or simply relax at the campsite if the weather is good. Recommend Booths supermarket - the Co-op isn't up to much (both in town centre). Loads of camping shops in town - encouraged us to spend a fortune on extras for our tent (windbreak, new gas cooker, etc!). I'd advise shopping around for whatever you're looking for - we bought a product in one shop and found it significantly cheaper in the next.
No park for kids but a huge grassy area where they can play ball games etc. Would recommend this site if being on the outskirts of town isn't an issue - if you'd prefer to be in town the C&CC site would suit you better. Reasonable price - £48 for 3 nights (no electric for tents). Oh and remember your midge repellent!

Superb facilities, clean and modern and no additional payment required for showers.
Extremely useful campers kitchen with freezer for ice packs
Well stocked shop
Amazing views over Derwent Water
Friendly and helpful staff
Immaculate site, litter free.
About 1 mile walk downhill through woodland to Keswick
Ideal location for walkers, we did Blencathra and Cat Bells but there are a host to choose from
I would definitely return

'The site with a view'
This simple slogan is adopted by Castlerigg Hall. And with good reason. Spectacular!
I have to say it is not the best thing about this site. The facilities are excellent, staff very friendly!
Showers are hot and free, very clean and with the means of keeping them clean readily to hand.
They also provide a superb 'campers kitchen'! Tables and cooking equipment, boil a kettle for free, make toast etc. The Hob and microwave being coin operated.
You need to think carefully about where to pitch, as the slope can be an issue. But even the 'overflow' field was brilliant.
If we exclude the crows the silence after 10.30 was honoured with rare exceptions.
I stayed for 5 days, and was reluctant to leave, indeed I will be back shortly.
This site puts many others in the area to shame.

Just returned from a one night stay at Castlerigg Hall campsite. I was new to camping and this was a wonderful introduction, much nicer than I thought it was going to be!
The toilet and shower block were comparable to those at the JJB Gym (now DW Fitness) where I go, lovely and clean and look good too (not just functional but looks nice).
The sign said 'Site full' when we arrived, but we asked if there might be room and they fit us in. So it's always worth asking.
The shop was well stocked and open till 9pm which was decent. It was not overpriced and comparable to any street corner style off licence. Not supermarket prices but still very reasonable.
Found the staff to be friendly and helpful.
The views are second to none, it really did look like something from a postcard looking out over the hills. It is breathtaking. The surrounding area is quiet close to the small town of Keswick but if you're looking for a base to explore Lakeland I would certainly recommend and would have no hesitation to re-visit this site.

Just returned back from Castlerigg Hall after a very enjoyable week in the sun (yes there wasn't even a drop of rain in a whole week in the Lake District, there's a first for everything !)
I cannot recommend this site highly enough, the welcome at reception on arrival was excellent and this set the precedent for our stay. All of the facilities, as have been mentioned previously, were fantastic, and kept well cleaned and maintained throughout. The shop was well stocked and reasonably priced (we bought a new folding chair as one of our old ones broke, and it was cheaper to buy on site than in any of the outdoor shops Keswick had to offer !)
The pub adjacent to the site was a little tired, but served decent pints, and the beer garden had a good view over towards Bassenthwaite Lake. We walked down the (mainly downhill) footpath to Keswick several times, but note if you wear shorts that there are some rather severe nettles, particularly on the first 200-300 yards of the path, and in wet weather the footpath could be prone to turning very muddy. Also, the walk back up the footpath may be unsuitable for the infirm or unfit as it has a long and steep uphill section.
Keswick itself is a delightful town, the main supermarket is 'Booths' which is located next to the bus station, and stocks good quality foods and drinks, including plenty of local produce and recognised brands. There is also a Co-Op and plenty of independent stores. An abundance of gardens, museums and pubs also are available in the town.
So all in all, an excellent location and campsite. My only quibble ? The lack of provision for pre-booking camping (tent) pitches. Even though it was out with School holiday times when we stayed, it was still at capacity, meaning that at peak periods inevitably some campers will be disappointed, and a back up plan should be in place if you venture to Castlerigg in holiday times / at weekends.

We arrived during the morning of Wed 24th June and booked in at reception for a 3 night stay. The lady on reception was very helpful and gave us directions to the tent fields. We opted for the larger tent field to the west side of the site.
We selected our pitch (you have to have 3 metres between pitches) and got our tent up. I suggest that you check your pitch before starting to put up your tent - some areas of the ground were soft on top but must have been concrete a few inches down as some of our tent pegs were difficult to put all the way into the ground. As a bonus we were able to park our car right next to our tent. Most areas of the field were on a slope so be careful to pitch your tent in a way to accommodate the slope. It wasn't too steep but you would probably notice it when you went to bed and found yourself rolling over - lol!
We then had a look around the site facilities and were very impressed. There is a shower / toilet block for the main tent field which looks brand new and very modern. There was also a pot wash room with 4 sinks for you to do your washing up. Disabled facilities are excellent too.
There is an onsite bar/restaurant called 'Jiggers'. Never went in there as it was closed on the Wednesday and Thursday which was a shame. It is normally closed on a Thursday I think but it looks OK and the prices on the menu in the window seemed quite reasonable.
There are other shower/toilet facilities next to the restaurant which is located as you enter the site. The onsite shop was OK too and stocked the essentials as well as newspapers and magazines. Prices were OK for an onsite shop.
The site is located off a main road but is set back so there is no traffic noise. Beware of the military aircraft flying low over the site - we had 2 jet aircrafts doing low flying exercises while we were there - quite fascinating to see them flying so low. I think they were training.
You can walk into the centre of Keswick from the site using a public footpath which takes about 20-30 minutes but be warned, on the way back it is uphill all the way!
There are plenty of local walks in the area - we went to the Stone Circle. However, we made the mistake of walking back from the Stone Circle to the campsite the long way round and we suffered for it the next day!
Weather was perfect for our very first camping trip and we have been bitten by the camping bug.
We recommend this site highly as the facilities are first class and the location is perfect. We hope to go back one day but for our next trip we will try another site just to get more experienced in camping.
My final comment is that Keswick itself, although a beautiful place, is quite expensive compared to other areas of the Lake District. The cheapest round of drinks in a local pub was about £4.25 for a pint and a half of lager! Also, don't bother with the pub just round the corner from the campsite - drinks are extortionate and the meals are vegetarian only - they were charging over £3 for a pint! Rip-off.

I have just got back from this site having camped there for three nights over the course of the weekend. Chose the site on the basis of the very positive reviews on here and as I was with my 10 & 5 year old boys I wanted to be pretty sure what I was going to get for my money!
Have to say it was everything previous posters have said and more, fantastic site, toilet & Shower block were without doubt the best I've come across on a campsite. The shop was open from early till late stocking all the basic necessities which whilst being dearer than in the supermarket was well worth the extra few pennies for it to be there on the doorstep.
Tried the Pizza night in the onsite restaurant which the kids enjoyed then BBQ'd by the tent the other two nights.
Kids loved the recreation area, and the woodland walk down into Keswick, (pooh sticks on the bridge!), little fella found it a bit steep on the way back though.
The views are beautiful, the site immaculate, only gripes would be the sloping pitch which tended to make the camp beds slide together during the night and me to lose balance when putting my socks on!
Well worth a visit

We have stayed at castlerigg a number of times before but always in a tent, this was our 1st time with a caravan.
Site overall is clean and well maintained, recently refurbished toilet / showerblock at the tent side of the site is very nice but limited number of showers.
Our pitch was on one of the lower terraces (2nd from the bottom) and whilst level and individually serviced for fresh and grey water it was very tight to get a 21' caravan onto and the hill down to / away from the lower terraces is very steep, smaller engined outfits will properly struggle getting back up and the chemical toilet point was a way up the hill, really not great.
Overall a nice site and would recommend but when booking try to make sure you get one of the terraces nearer the entrance.
