Great campsite, friendly and welcoming owner who was more than happy to help with my array of daft questions! Easy walking down to South Sands where you can either get the ferry or walk to Salcombe - it's a bit of an up and down walk but as we did, you can reward yourself with a couple of G&Ts at the lovely South Sands hotel before walking back up the hill to the campsite!

Really good value at £19 per night over the Easter weekend for a motorhome and two adults. Views really good and campsite fairly peaceful.

Only downsides are the access road which is a bit hair-raising and having to have 20p for the showers which weren't brilliant (and were cold on one occasion).

Would definitely return to this site and recommend to others staying in this area.

We are currently staying at Higher Rew the week after Spring Bank Hol and have been here long enough to be able to make an accurate assessment of the site and surroundings. Bottom line is that it is an amazing place and area but not without drawbacks which I will cover shortly.

Firstly I would start with the access which is absolutely dreadful and has been mentioned before not for the fainthearted. There really is only one route a caravanner can use and that is to come down the A381 into Malborough then turn a jack-knifingly sharp right onto Higher Town and then on to Higher Rew which is clearly marked. There will be no major problem if you meet car or cars in the other direction, there are ample passing points (except the final 1500yds), the issue will come if you meet another caravan or motorhome. For this reason there is an unwritten rule to be off site before 12 when leaving and not arrive until the afternoon. The final stretch is so narrow the foliage is brushing the sides of the van and you can hardly turn into the entrance of the site if you have a twin axle because the overhang of the rear of the van.

Strangely there seemed to be a majority of twin axle caravans on site and these are more difficult to get level because of the extra length. I would say I could pitch ours on over 80% of them because of the way the sloping field has been terraced and individual pitches levelled. The pitches are a good size and the pitch numbers and dividing lines are burnt into the grass by using pathclear preventing any growth. In wet weather or boggy conditions there could be issues getting the van off the pitch if you don't have a 4x4 but in this case the site owner is more than happy to pull you onto tarmac with one of their tractors.

The site is very peaceful. There is the sound of children playing and cattle mooing. Road traffic cannot be heard even on a still day. It doesn't take long before you can fully relax. We had some cute ducks that would march in line down from the fields above us and forage for the seed and bread we put down.

There are beautiful views and some great walks directly from the farm, the area has lots of history as it had a WW2 airbase and still has a (now privately owned) nuclear bunker near the outdoor activity centre. The camp shop has a supply of well produced walking and cycling maps as well as a few shopping basics. There is a large Tesco first exit from the first roundabout entering Kingsbridge and a few hundred yards before that a smaller Morrisons. Kingsbridge has the largest density of charity shops I have ever seen if you are into these.

We enjoyed using our Kayak in the estuary, there is a place to hire and get lessons on the South Beach which is around the corner from Salcombe. Sadly car parking is dreadful, not even any paid spaces so you can either get the short ferry from Salcombe or park in the pay and dislay on North Beach and walk over the hill to South Beach. North Beach allows dogs year round and floods completely each high tide while South Beach does not, so the council prohibits dogs 1st May to 30th Sept. It has shallow water, nice soft sand perfect for young families and tots which is the only place you are going to find it on Higher Rew/Salcombe side of the estuary. There is more over the other side and you can access this via a foot passenger ferry from Salcombe or take a very long drive around by car which we haven't tried. North Beach is £6. 50 for all day parking, you can also pay by phone or smart phone over the Internet. The Winking Prawn cafe is small but perfectly formed, it was always very busy people were not put off by the high prices, but then there is nowhere else to go without inconvenience. On the subject of conveniences, the public loos are 50 yards up on North Beach, not sure what you do on South Beach unless you use the Hotel or beach cafe facilities.

The estuary is great for surfers. There is the outgoing river flow which builds up and opposes the incoming tide which sets up a series of breaking waves which move up river or break over the sandbank on the opposite side. One part looked to have a nasty rip current there I could tell because the water went from zero depth to very deep in just a few yards but I think that beach is privately owned anyway. There are regular patrols by the harbour master to keep people informed and safe but it's not a problem if you are in a boat or canoe at least not in the mild weather we experienced.

A comment for the 0. 1% of you reading this that has discovered the joys of Autogas, there is a station just outside of Kingsbridge but it's very expensive at 69. 9p/litre compared to Gordano Services on the M5 at 49. 9p/litre which I had on the previous fillup. The station has a garden and camping centre attached. It has to be one of the biggest and best I've visited and will be able to cover all your camping or caravanning accessory or fishing or marine needs. In contrast to the Autogas price, Ashby's store was extremely reasonable so be sure to pay it a visit.

Mobile phone and Internet reception is brilliant using EE/Virgin Media, TV signal was more limited on Freeview because of the opposite hill, I'm not sure if to set up the satellite dish or not. If you are a big TV addict you are better bringing that. Edit: In the end I did set it up, point the dish parallel with the lowest road to the end of the field and you won't be too far out.

A must place to visit nearby is Bigbury-on-sea which attracts all the surfers and Burgh Island which has a sea tractor (£2/person each direction) to give access when the causeway is flooded. Was disappointed by the Pilchard Inn which was not serving food and half of which is reserved for island residents only. The hotel opposite has a top rating on Trip Advisor but with rooms starting at £400/night no wonder two caravanners with dogs were not a welcome sight. At least Hams council have retained public access to the west half of the island which affords some spectacular views. Mainland car park was £1. 30 for 1 hour.

We visited nearby South Milton Sands which lost half it's sand dunes in a storm in 2014. This was disappointing there were no rubbish bins and the shoreline was extremely steep causing large breaking waves even though the sea was relatively calm. You could tell it gets deep very quickly and you could see the rip currents leading out to sea. Not a place for the kids and the sand was coarse and not very clean having seaweed and washed up debris. Our dog rolled in some smelly sand which smelt as if it covered something which died and been buried. Disgusting.

The above reinforced our affinity for Salcombe North Sands beach which is clean and close by, has excellent shade as the heat of the day and sun progresses and some interesting places to paddle to if you are out on the water.

So before we have even left Higher Rew we have decided to return next year. It will be really sad to go and we can't wait to return. We have many photos and memories to take with us.

Landed at Higher Rew after a weeks camping on a quiet site in North Wales at Morfa Nefyn and got quite a culture shock. Found the owners and staff to be friendly enough on arrival.

Traffic always on the go upto 3 am back and forwards to the toilet block as some pitches quite away from amenities with scant regards to the 10 mile an hour limit.

Toilet block, showers and dish/laundry area clean but dated.

Wifi was a hands up from the kids

Dogs on leader rule dosn't apply to seasonal pitches or so it seams with dogs running after balls?? PS I'm a dog owner.

What you have to take into account during the summer six week holidays with over a hundred pitches at £200 ish for a family a week that's between £10-20K a week I would expect the amenities to match up to the advertisement.

I must add here that I'm not a fair weather camper having backpacked all my life and done my share of roughing it but still expect to get value for money.

I'm an avid fan of the saying (It does what it says on the Tin) and so found Higher Rew lacking and relying on its reputation rather than investing to keep and gain custom.

Found the site well placed for areas of interest, walking and beaches.

I had booked this originally when we had a tent but in the meantime we bought a motorhome so I decided to keep the booking. We arrived to a note posted outside the shop telling us to choose a pitch as Sue was unavailable until teatime. She certainly made us welcome later in the day. Higher Rew is in a lovely situation, within walking distance of South Sands and the cliffs of the coastal path. It is well kept and laid out on a sloping but terraced field with plenty of space on each pitch although I would say that if you had a very long unit you may struggle for a flat pitch. Many caravans were obviously seasonal and storage is available. Takeaway will deliver to the site!

There is a small shop for basics with limited opening hours (8:30-9:00)although longer at weekends when the site seems to fill up. Showers (20p/4 mins- which is enough!), wash-up sinks and laundry occupy one building and toilets and wash basins another, all clean with plenty of hot water. The playbarn was a good feature for youngsters and the best place to use wifi.

Pros. - lovely area to explore on foot/bike, wildlife and flora, quiet, friendly

Cons. - no washing cubicles for privacy, showers too hot for children and no baby/family washroom, no facilities for the disabled, 'keep dogs on lead' not upheld so that we had to remove dog dirt from our pitch when we arrived.

I would stay here again but you really need transport to see all that the area has to offer. We were a bit limited with a motorhome that would prove difficult on narrow/steep Devonshire lanes. Perhaps next time we'll stick with the tent!

Very nice campsite, clean & friendly. It is 20p for 4 minutes for the showers which are set at the right temp, once you put in your 20p it gives you 1 min to get ready for use. Lots of thing for the kids to do. Easy to get too places, 25/30mins walk to the lovely clean beach. Recommend the Royal Oak pub in the village they are very friendly & welcoming. There is another pub but find them not very welcoming to tourists.

The location of this campsite is ideal for walkers and only a short way from Salcombe. The pitches are quite small and in our case sloping. The reception we had was friendly and courteous although it would have helped if we were taken to our pitch, as with other campsites we have stayed on, instead of a pointed finger. We were only there for 3 nights and found the site at night quite noisy ( people letting there children ride bikes and kicking footballs a 11pm ) We did ask what the policy was for this kind of behaviour and was told that they would investigate and deal with problem but they must have forgotten as the noise continued. The facilities were clean but unfortunately the layout of the site meant that some pitches were about 300 to 400 yards away. The play area could do with an update as it looked tired and worn out with just a few rubber mats on concrete.

We originally booked 10 nights at Higher Rew and ended up leaving after just 3 because the experience was so awful.

To start with, they put us on a different pitch to the one we had booked, which happened to be next to a large and, as it turns out, rather noisy family gathering. The first night the neighbours' kids were up until 11pm and woke our kids up. We spoke to them to ask them to keep the noise down and they did. For about 10 minutes.

The next day we spoke to the camp site owners and asked them to have a word. They didn't and the next night was the same as the first, except that this time they decided to have a game of football at 11pm. Again we had to ask them to keep the noise down, and again our kids were woken up.

The third night was pretty similar so we decided to leave. The campsite owners tried to charge us for the full 10 nights, which we declined to agree to do, and then tried to compromise by charging for 5 nights. We explained exactly what had happened and the fact that they had not stuck to their own policy of no noise after 10pm and had to insist that we wouldn't payfor any more than the 3 nights. They very reluctantly agreed.

Aside from the experience, we were told the pitch number and pointed in the general direction, the pitches are not level, the facilities are some distance from the pitches, the children's' play area is downright dangerous, and the showers, despite being hot, dribble rather than shower.

We will definitely not be going back to Higher Rew again.

I am sure this is an idyllic campsite in the summer, but this Easter was bitterly cold. As was our welcome. There was no reception open, a flustered lady in an apron came out after a long wait from a neighbouring property.

The shop was not open, we did not see the proprietor until we paid to leave.

The showers are warm, but the block is not heated, the door does not even close - again in the summer its fine, but this Easter weekend it was perishing.

I did not see any cleaning of the toilets or showers during the 4 nights we stayed - the same grass was on the loo floors and talc in the showers and the bins were overflowing. I know it was bleak for anyone being outside, and its the start of the season - but half the showers and toilets were kept closed so there were still queues at the showers (which is a cold wait) because half couldn't be used.

I am sure on a different weekend it would be glorious and in full season everything is open - but if you don't have an onboard toilet or shower (and we don't), when its bitterly cold, unless you are a lot hardier than I am this probably isn't the campsite for you. And bring your own 20ps for the shower, as again the promised shop with a ready supply we never saw open.

The hook up worked, but the nearest water tap to us didn't so we had to walk again a lot further than we would have liked in the weather for water. The power went out in the toilet blocks over the weekend, and I could not get hot water out of the two most obvious hand basins in the toilet block for love or money, but the far side did have hot water if you let it run. Again a shutting door for a 3am loo stop would have been hugely advantageous.

There are other nice facilities nearby like the hotels at South Beach - but on the campsite website it states all these places and other pubs are within a mile, which is why we picked it at this time of year. However, in reality most of them are over 1. 5 miles and nearer to 2 (I guess there may be a footpath but as we saw noone at the campsite to ask any questions of we never found them). Again in the summer an extra 10 minutes walking is fine - when there are snow flurries. Well I had hoped to get to the pub a lot quicker!

It was a real shame as I am sure in a few weeks time it will be a different place, but with the current extreme weather, I personally didn't think the facilities were adequate and the site should have delayed opening until the weather warmed up(even a door on the shower block, or pull on heater, or wooden bath mat as the floors were freezing would have helped). And a little human interaction would have been nice.

This was our second year at Higher Rew. Absolutely lovely site which is why we came back!

Nice relaxed feeling and attitude by the owners who are really helpful. Good spacious pitches that are reasonably level due to terracing.

Clean and ample facilities - did have to queue for a shower once (morning rush hour, so what do you expect?) but didn't wait more than few mins (20p charge means you don't get shower hoggers!) If you want a longer shower, just put 2 x 20p's in, but 20p was perfectly long enough for a body and hair wash in my opinion. Showers were always hot and always clean. Plenty of toilets and they were always clean too.

Kids (big and small) can ride bikes on site which is great - I love seeing kids off having fun meeting new holiday friends. There is also lots of open space for kids to run around. There's quite a steep hill up behind the top row of pitches and it's perfect for flying kites - the shop even sells some! Undercover play area is fine - a little basic, but OK, and gives the kids somewhere to head for and meet there friends.

Shop seemed to be well stocked with basics although we didn't use it much. Nearest mini supermarket is Malborough where there is a co-op in the Texaco garage. Chip van came once a week as did the Hog Roast man (which was really really delicious and reasonably priced).

Facilities for recycling on site.

The only slight downside is the narrow lanes to get there. You need nerves of steel pulling a van (well maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration!). Having said that, maybe that puts some people off to our benefit ;-)

A Winking Prawn Evening BBQ (North Sands, Salcombe) is a must for us - a bit expensive but delicious; we always share a couple between us as an end of stay treat!

We'll be there again in 2013 as we think it is the best campsite in the South Hams (and we've stayed at a few) for what we want: relaxed site, level pitches, safe freedom for the kids, easy reach of Hope Cove and Bigbury.

Stopped for one night while backpacking along the South West Coast Path.

The Proprietor was welcoming and, as requested, gave me a quiet pitch. A good campsite with excellent showers and toilets.

The campsite is a bit off the Coast Path but worth the detour.

There are several footpaths around in this beautiful area so this campsite would be an ideal base for a few days walking.

I would be happy to call again.
